this song is easily one of the best love songs EVER written. the themes of movement, forgiveness, hope, and trust coupled with the absolutely ASTOUNDING music are completely timeless. KOD was (and is) one of the best bands to tap into the complexities of the heart with the emotive music to match. I still thank (deity of choice) that I actually got to see them back in '92 supporting Suzanne Vega (weird!)

A little transcribing from a podcast called The Hustle interviewing Patrick..."Julian wrote all the music. Patrick wrote the lyrics and originally called it Sedition. An agressive political song. Dan and Julian said no, we don't like that. Patrick gets furious. "How dare you tell me what to write". Patrick then goes and writes the lyrics we now hear. Patrick telling how it feels from his point of view. He says it's a vague lyric about not belonging. "Well, if people don't want to come along with me, well there you go." It's also when Julian started to layer and layer and layer guitars over and over again. Julian knew it was the hit and Patrick thought Quick as Rainbows. It's a great interview.

    Lyrics
You stand here in my place
Feel the warmth upon your face
Stand back and start to smile
    You now have time
    You now have will
I would never want to leave this country
Where rules are fast and knowledge easy
I would never want to take you with me
    Unless you're open
    And trust my hand
I would never wish this much on you
When what you have might be enough
I would never want to drive that fast
    Unless you're ready, willing, happy
    Take me
    Away from these simple feelings
    I know
There's places on the other sides of here
    Take me
    Away from these simple feelings
    I know
I'll take that car and drive there faster
I would never want to take you with me
Until you're open and grab my hand
I would never wish this much on you
Until you like to live that fast
You stand here in my place
Feel the warmth upon your face
Stand back and start to smile
    You now have time
    You now have will
I would never want to do that to you
To take you far and leave you stranded
I have never gone quite far enough
But you can get off whenever you like
    Take me
    Away from these simple feelings
    I know
There's places on the other sides of here
    Take me
    Away from these simple feelings
    I know
I'll take that car and drive there faster
I would never want to do that to you
I would never want to drive that fast

I used to have this on a cassette. Brings back a lot of memories of my time in college before leaving for the Marine Corps.

Was introduced to this group and a lot of others that I would never have known by my fellow dormmates in the early 90's. Check out 'Smiling' by them if you liked this.

There are acolytes of Phil Specter's Wall of Sound production astheti6. There are also Power Rock Trios. Yer Rush's, Yer Triumph's Yer Zebra's. However, Echo & the Bunneymen showed up with 50s/60s psychedelia garage. The Mighty Lemon Drops appeared from Wales. KOD utilized their love for the Velvets coupled with Wall of Sound aesthetic. Bam! Get three like minded Scotd

You stand here in my place
Feel the warmth upon your face
Stand back and start to smile
    You now have time
    You now have will
I would never want to leave this country
Where roads are fast and knowledge easy
I would never want to take you with me
    Unless you're open
    And trust my hand
I would never wish this much on you
When what you have might be enough
I would never want to drive that fast
    Unless you're ready, willing, happy
    Take me
    Away from these simple feelings
    I know
There's places on the other sides of here
    Take me
    Away from these simple feelings
    I know
I'll take that car and drive there faster
I would never want to take you with me
Until you're open and grab my hand
I would never wish this much on you
Until you like to live that fast
You stand here in my place
Feel the warmth upon your face
Stand back and start to smile
    You now have time
    You now have will
I would never want to do that to you
To take you far and leave you stranded
I have never gone quite far enough
But you can get off whenever you like
    Take me
    Away from these simple feelings
    I know
There's places on the other sides of here
    Take me
    Away from these simple feelings
    I know
I'll take that car and drive there faster
I would never want to do that to you
I would never want to drive that fast
I would never want to do that to you
I would never want to drive that fast

I was just sitting here at work and the television show was on in the background, and one of the announcer mentioned something about something having "distinction"...... then I thought to myself..... I used to listen to a band named distinction something....."Kitchens of Distinction" I mumbled to myself, because no one else would know what the heck I would be talking about....lol. Great song!

Like the Chameleons UK, KOD is a criminally under appreciated post punk band of epic power. Get all their music, you’ll be happy you did.

I heard this in 1990-1991...something like that...and years later became a truck driver. This is the greatest non-country truck driving song ever, even though he talks about doing it in a car (there's more room in a truck--just sayin'...hee hee...).

I just discovered this band a couple months ago. They completely blow my mind. And what is more incredible is that though I just discovered them, this song (and a couple others like Mad As Snow) are a perfect reminder of music back around 89/90/91/92 when I was just starting middle school and such. Amazing.

I heard this for the first time on 120 minutes in the early 90s and immediately bought the album. My clique of high school friends from Kingsport, TN were quite the anglophiles, and we would listen to this album incessantly. I'm just glad some 4AD titles got distributed to my small town before the digital era, as it had a huge impact. As another said, my heart still soars every time I hear it. 4AD is still a fantastic label. Long may she live.

One Little Indian was their label at the time. But I agree, 4AD is still a great label.

Still sounds great all these years later. I first saw this video on a program called "Noise Network" late one Saturday night when I was 23 years old living in my first apartment in 1991. I was hooked and used my meager wages to get the CD the next day. That show introduced me to some great bands but I can't find anyone else who's heard of it. This music is better than anything being made today.
