this one AMV made me start reading the light novel and here I am, back, having the weird feeling of recalling the events and amazed that most of my speculations was spot on
Touma is the main protagonist, Accelerator and Shiage serve as side protagonists; nonetheless, they are protagonists. The story will be (mostly) shaped from the actions and choices of the three, yet Touma still serves as the focal point in the story.
I read the books and touma never said that aogami had an esper power much less anywhere near a strong esper (if this was known by anyone he probably would not be going to that school and/or the girl that works for the board would have made some sort of remark about him) so he might be keeping his true power secret. he is probably somebody important though since he keeps making jokes that pertain to what touma just went through in previous arcs but not necessarily in a battle position or a esper.
actually, Accelerator became the primary main protagonist in the Science side of To Aru Majutsu no Index since Touma was very busy in the Magic side thus making Accelerator as a main character as well (Touma is almost out-of-focus in the later Science side of the novel)... Still, Touma is the true full main character of the series due to him being the 1st protagonist of the story...
I think that's why Accelerator and Hamazura become a protagonist too. Because Imagine Breaker mostly hunted down by the magic-side, Touma's most connection to the science-side probably only Misaka (which is one of the heroines). So Accelerator being the strongest and Hamazura being the lucky one to survive against 4th ranked Level 5 Esper brings a balance to show what's going on in the Science-side.
Well if size and connections - no one can beat Kamijou Touma's power He has connection to the new Media Queen He has connection to the President of the USA and the British Royalty He has connections to Magic Cabals like New Light He has allies in the Angelican Church, the Amakusas and the Roman Catholic Church He has the AIM diffusion field 'angel' as a close friend. He has a fairy sized neutralized Magic God who he just saved from death He has the no. 3 esper closeby. He has access to 103000 grimoires in his house He has his mysterious power of negation - the Imagine Breaker And a lot more! (Its hard to remember everything you know!)

所々にエヴァで使われてた演出があるんですよ。
具体的には1:17~1:21秒にあったパネルが反転してLEVEL5たちの顔がでてくるあのパネルはエヴァのゼーレとゆうキャラで使われてたり、2:47~2:50秒での演出はエヴァ初号機が暴走するときに使われてます。
