Would you like to live in the 1930s??
Heck no...the biggest economic depression in modern human history was getting worse....
In this beautiful video
If I'm black and live in the South? No, thank you.
Nope, I would rather be a time traveler just visiting, lol
Would be interesting to experience the 1930's for a day or two, but to live under those relatively poor circumstances, with the prospects of WW2 just around the corner: I'll take a pass.
Being a native San Franciscan this film was very special to me. Much of it still exists. It was a treat seeing it from almost 100 years ago in color and with such fine detail.
Kudos to NASS for his work in bringing us this incredible film. Your efforts never go unappreciated sir. As always........thank you so much!!!!
thank you very much
Can you pls tell me where is that place with the statues of the lions?
@@alisaalisa2060 YES it still exists, the name of it is "Luisa Tetrazzini Historical Marker" It is named after the woman Luisa Tetrazzini. The statue still exists in the same place but it was made shorter I guess either because of power lines above it or maybe people were climbing it? No idea. Location: 690 Market Street, San Francisco CA 94105
@@alisaalisa2060 I believe you are referring to the original De Young museum which was in Golden Gate Park. It was sadly demolished in 2000 and replaced with a new building.
But lions still there!
I also notice how people are leisurely walking. No racing around frantically. Great piece of history.

Absolutely your best yet of "The City"....hitting all of the great wonders....Golden Gate Park, Alcatraz, the bridge, Union Square....what a wonderful time. Thank you for your fine work.
Thank you
It looked like such an amazing place back then
Amazing, NASS.
Many thanks. Man, the eerie (for me) sidewalk scenes around 1:38-1:45 are like being back IN the 1930's. Mind blown.
thank you very much
Nass, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again,… You are an artist with these videos!👍
thank you very much
Thank you for sharing this wonderful video with us all,I loved it!!!🌟
Thank you
I started high school in '72 and have memories of The City from before that, I recognize a lot that is seen in this vid, but all it does now is make me feel ancient, nearing the end.
I originally thought, seeing the Bay Bridge, that the earliest this video could be was 1936. That’s when the bridge opened. Then later in the video it showed the Golden Gate Bridge which opened in May, 1937. In fact I saw a 1937 Chevrolet sedan drive by in one of the shots in Golden Gate Park.
2:50 to 3:25 I expected to see a green ‘68 Mustang flying over the hills in the background chasing a dark blue ‘68 Dodge Charger.
This is a great video of the city I grew up in.
thank you very much
lol....that would have been great to see Steve McQueen flying over the hills especially considering he was only 8 years old at the time and the cars you mentioned would not be manufactured for another 30 years! Loved that movie...feel off my seat in the theater during the car chase when it was released in 1968. McQueen turned a corner too fast and I was so engrossed in the movie I went flying onto the isle. 🤣 Great movie....great city!
@@nwicconsultants6640 Yep, I think everyone’s stomach did some flip-flops when watching the inside camera shots jumping those hills. I especially enjoyed the the movie because I grew up in the “City” and was 22 when the movie came out. You’re right, great movie
@@sfeddie1 77 trips around the sun...good for you and hope you are well...God bless!
Wow! The quality here is insane! Thank you for your wonderful work NASS! 👏
thank you very much
Another amazing trip in my time machine watching this video to San Francisco in the 30s which just seems like yesterday
thank you very much
Thank you very much because your rework on the videos is amazing beyond words and also educational to me to look into the history of that time @@NASS_0
Always love the driving parts. Makes you feel like you’re there
What a beautiful city San Fran WAS
That was magic thank you!
thank you very much
Beautiful! I want to go back! What has happened to our once great country!😢
Bidumb and the commiecraps!
Democrats ruined everything.
So you're one of the people who thinks that the USA was better when minorities and women were denied equal rights, when men thought it was ok to beat their wives, when kids were forced to work in factories - before all the advances to help people lead better lives happened. If you actually did find yourself back then, you'd be pretty unhappy unless you were white, male, wealthy and christian.
Do you dress up like that to go out?
Then, be the change you want to see
Thank you Bonnie !😄
Thank u NASS. Sharing this out to nephew who lived there for 5 years 2001. I lived in San Jose as a child and we would venture a visit to Fisherman wharf for prawns and chips at Grotto #9 in the 1960's. And ohhhhh... the best sourdough bread by Parisian! 😊
Instantly hooked to your channel.
A bit of 1930's road rage 2:50 . NASS are the wizards of remastering and communicate historical flicks.
Thank you 👌
It's a scene from the movie Bullitt circa 1930
Well done NASS - What I remember best about Safran was growing up and hearing the jingle tune "Rice a Roni, The San Francisco treat"! San Franscisco looked amazing back then. Not today, I would not even step into the city. Nice Job Nass!
thank you very much
This video covered a lot almost jam packed with different locations from Golden gate to Alcatraz then sheep grazing and bison too hustle and bustle of the city great video
Beautiful Video 👍👍👍👌 Thanks NASS
thank you ;)
The only thing I can see is that is different, is the Cliff HOUSE is no longer in business, great video, still nice in a lot of places, but since the 70’s in has slowly gone downhill, a shame, so have most of our cities. 👍
perhaps your misinformed by the fake phony media but not all cities are going downhill like those on the west coast such as San Francisco or Portland, Oregon. But many are thriving with a high quality of life such as Dallas/Fort Worth where jobs are plentiful and cost of living is not so expensive; schools are great; and the culture is strong with qualify of life for everyone equally. I am always amused when liberal voters claim all American cities are going downhill when in truth only the liberal democrat cities are the ones being destroyed from Detroit that has all but killed the American auto industry with deteriorating empty factories that once provided great jobs and prosperity but were killed by the policies of liberals to Chicago; murder capital of the United States where a young black man is higher risk of violent death than if he was in our military stationed in Iraq. The evidence is clear but most non thinking people only get their world view from the fake phony media that is nothing but a propaganda machine for the far left anti American people.
Beautiful, I have never seen this film before. I have heard that before the earthquake and fire it was even more wonderful. I knew a man when I was growing up in the Bay Area that was 13 when the 06' quake happened.
The first clip shows the completed Bay Bridge which would date that footage to 1936-1939 but then to the left is the Golden Gate International Exposition which was held in 1939, putting the date closer to 1940
Who are all these well-dressed slim people??
They were Conservatives but not neocons
@@lemdixon01Show me a neo con and I will show you someone who is conservative but afraid of liberals and don't want to be called names by them and the mainstream media.
Trump had not yet been born and the American world was still somewhat in order..
@@luislaplume8261show me someone under 65 that still watches or reads mainstream media and takes it seriously.
Indeed, Back when being a balloon ass was a rarity, Not the norm.😮
Loved this! As a 4th generation San Franciscan, it's intriguing that so many parts of SF are just as they were 90 years ago - fashion, cars, the skyline, and the De Young Museum are notably different. I think that's the first video I've seen of the De Young before it was rebuilt.
Thank you
NASS, I collect as much of your works as possible.
Beautiful footage. Thanks for uploading it.
Thank you
I enjoy them all. But this one is superb. Thank you!
thank you very much
5:01 is like a beautiful painting
Agreed. I was thinking about how California has so many postcard vistas and skies. 😊
Great work on the choice of subjects and colors. 👏🏻 Grandpa, nice putt !
thank you very much
Absolutely, amazing. Can you do a 1950/60's Atlanta, Ga?
Thank You, color really brings it to life. Excellent work.

SF was once a great city
Still is! Raising a family here and love it.
Refreshing as always.
Awesome NASS !! So sharp and clear.

It looked like a nice city back then.

What a beautiful, vibrant city, San. Francisco once was...😢
And now it is a city dump and a open toilet bowl and urinal filled with you know what, thanks to liberals.
It was filthy. Much nicer now.
@@soulscanner66I suppose... for those who are used to decades of transients sitting on sidewalks and crime at the Wharf and Tenderloin.😂😂
@@user-mv9tt4st9k You saw way more transients (Oakies) in San Francisco in the 30's.
Through the entire video, I didn't see one piece or trash or paper blowing around...

thank you very much ;)
Did anyone else notice that amazing parking technique towards the end of the video? 😆 A real pro! 😂
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing.
thank you very much
San Francisco was an Amusement Park for me, the bus across the Golden Gate for brunch in Saucilito, the boat ride back the cable cars, Chinatown, Fisherman's Warf, Golden Gate Park the Panhandle, Coit Tower, Castro, Alamo Park, my apartment at Divisidero and Grove, Knob Hill, the Exploritorium, South of Market, Union Square, amusement park.
At 0:29 what are those tall rectangular buildings where the Embarcadero Center is?
For as long as I'm alive, I will keep coming back to see your vides. So, I hope you keeping doing this.
Merci nass, thank you nass. Morooco
thank you
Expo buildings!!
Amazing work as always. The tall statue at 2:08 is "Luisa Tetrazzini Historical Marker" for some reason it use to be much taller to day it is shorter but the light on top is still there today, my guess is either people were climbing it or maybe they had to install power lines over that area, pretty funny.
Keep in mind as you watch that the sounds are completely invented - those cars, boats, cable cars and ships didn't sound like that, people walking sounded different (shoes and tires were made of different materials and patterns than now, the road surfaces were different, and the ambient sound is wrong) and the horses didn't sound like that. And many of the common sounds that existed in SF back then are completely absent - they were never recorded, and are lost. And, of course, the smells are completely lost, too. Like all of history, most of what was there was not recorded - in this case, only the black and white, low quality images survived, and all the rest here is artistic license aided by AI. This is not to denigrate all the work that went into this - it's just saying that this is not accurate history, it's just for entertainment. After watching this, we still don't really know what it was like to walk or drive in SF in the 1930s. It's impossible, now, to "capture the essence" of life back then.
I lived in SF myself, from 1975 to 1985, and for most of my time there I enjoyed the city and thought it was pretty wonderful - but that didn't blind me either to its history or to its serious problems.
Many of the commenters here are claiming that San Francisco was idyllic in the past, and nearly perfect in the 1930s. Well, no. When these lovely videos were taken, It was incredibly racist, lots of the population was poor, women had fewer legal rights than men, it was extremely homophobic, the city government was corrupt, the city police force was corrupt, and criminal gangs controlled big sections of the economy. But yes, it was pretty.
HI NASS,, ENJOYING ANOTHER GREAT VIEW OF ANOTHER WORLD ON OUR BIG SCREEN LOOKING SO REAL .. THE PEOPLE AND TRAINS MY SON MAX 8 YR.S SAYS ,, WE LIKE THE CARS ALSO ,, THE CRAZY MAN DRIVING THAT GREEN 1933 FORD?? CONVERTIBLE AND HONKING SO LOUD SCARED US AND DRIVING FAST .. THE CAPITAL BUILDING IS STILL THERE AND CHINA TOWN HAS CHANGED SOME... THE BOATING IS GREAT!! THANKS.....
thank you very much
The "capitol building" is actually the opera house. California's capitol building is in Sacramento.
Little recognizable now from when this happened. Clothing, cars, buildings, public transportation.. all different.
Yeah and better. The infrastructure we have now has been whittled down to cars, cars, and more cars. We’ve destroyed our infrastructure because of our love for too much convenience, and I also believe it’s made us lazier. Look at how much people have gained weight. The increase in crashes and closures to streetcars, abandonments of railroad branch lines, and less bicycles and other transportation, it’s added risk for more traffic jams, and injuries and death. I loved the first half of the 20th century. A lot more tradition back then.
We NEED to bring back our old infrastructure, but we’ve destroyed and built over so much.
NASS! Thank you for posting.
Thank You bro
The reality is this shows what the once great city looked liked. An eye sore now.
A once great but now, absolute fallen city.
Bull sh*t.
Uma das cidades mais lindas do mundo...San Francisco. Obrigado por compartilhar essas lindas imagens.
That was San Francisco circa 1936. The colors are artificial and do not correspond to the colors of the trolleys owned by the city goverment and the private trolley lines.
Trust me, fashion and other creative industries are watching these videos for inspiration.
Late 1930s just before WWII. The Mark Hopkins Hotel and its famous "top of the Mark" restaurant and bar stood out.
GG & Bay Bridges, Coit Tower, and Alcatraz Prison were basically brand new.
クラシックカーはなんて味が良いのだろうか💘
At 0:54 look at all the people on Market Street, contributing to the vibrant life of a well-dressed city. Today Market is a ghost town, with all the descendants of those shoppers now self-exiled at home, ordering out for everything.
At 1:30 I felt like we were riding with Jimmy Stewart!
It looks really lovely
Nice clean
Lotta's Fountain at 2:05, some movie footage in Pacific Heights after that probably for picture; city hall at 8:30 looks about the same now; Union Square at 8:30 looks much better now following two remodels; Mission Dolores at 8:32;
This is awesome! 🎉
back in the days when nothing was made in china.
Except China Town.
"back in the days when nothing was made in china" - 1930s, back in the days when Japan started to terrorize China that led to the death of millions.
@@Sagiterrian77
Was it not made with American materials anyways ? ^^
Remember, this was when Alcatraz was still operational! In fact, they turned it into a federal prison that decade.
Thanks 👍 this is the old world at it's finest. Just beautiful. Huge buildings and PROOF off the previous builders all over. ❤
thank you very much
I'm sure this footage was taken on a random day, but I can see the air quality is better than it was during the COVID lockdown. The other side of the bay looks so much closer!
Keep in mind the population was much less outside San Francisco proper as well. The East Bay, Peninsula and what is now "Silicon Valley" were still largely rural! The massive growth of Western USA industry and cities after Pearl Harbor had yet to happen.
Thank You Nass Merry Christmas! 🎄❤
Thank You
Wow! Not a single stop sign or light. Everyone just throws themselves willy-nilly into intersections.
So cool to see GG Park with all the wildlife that are now gone.
The buffaloes are still in Golden Gate Park and thriving.
It's a good job,Bro🖐️👁️🇺🇦
thank you bro!

The Good Old Days, Before Newsom turned it into a Trash Heap DUMP.
As horrid and smarmy as Newsom was/is, his predecessors like Art Agnos had already set the decay into motion.
Looks like a Northampton class heavy cruiser at 5:15. The shot just before that is hard…looks like a destroyer maybe Clemson class if those are 4 stacks.
The progress we have made is breathtaking. We get what we have today by celebrating and honoring failure all in the name of making people “comfortable” as if that’s a right to life.
The vehicle at 2:31 today is worth more than a high end Lamborghini. Over 7 figures
Has to be later 30s, as there were some late 30s cars, and the bridge didn't open until 1936.
My how San Francisco has fallen from those days...
As always I plead - any car nuts please tell us what year, therabouts, this was shot.
Thank you. Hard to grasp how much destruction of humanity has been inflicted since.
Wish I’d been there for the jazz music 🙂
But with a modern recording device and a few TB of memory!

What building is that at 6:46?? And 6:56?? I don't recognize them.

This video dates from at least 1937. That's when the Golden Gate Bridge opened.
Alcatraz Prison was brand new. Nice.
