1st film was better than the 2nd in my opinion. Too much brainless and unnecessary violence in the 2nd film, and if you think about it, there were far more memorable scenes in the 1st film.
The romance between Tauriel and Kili was AWFUL. It was utterly useless. It didn't enhance the film at all. Nor did it add more depth to the source material. Quite the opposite. It distracted from the entire movie. It felt shoehorned in there by Hollywood, and didn't feel realistic at all.
I don't care what the reviewer says about the first Hobbit, I actually liked that movie! And I can't wait to see how it's sequels (including this one) turn out!
An Unexpected Journey was lackluster compared to The Fellowship of the Ring but after seeing The Desolation of Smaug last night it is safe to say that it gives The Two Towers a run for its money. The visuals in The Desolation of Smaug are simply the best visuals I have seen in movie history. The 48 FPS is amazing and is so realistic it is like you are watching a play. I can't wait for the Battle of Five Armies next year. Either way this trilogy is going to be incredible.
Hey, I would just like to say I am fking excited for this movie. Already have a gigantic joint rolled. Which I will wrap in a beautiful ribbon and call Madame Gange until this movie comes out.
But for the most part he was pronouncing it sm-oh-guh (like the letter o, see 0:23) ... but then he pronounces it sm-ah-guh (like smog, see 0:30). Nowhere does he pronounce it sm-ow-guh (ow as in allow).
Just came back from the cinema and I have to say that the movie is great. It didn't happen that I yawned a single time during the film, nor that I cared about the love between Kili and that girl... Whoever she was... I definitely recommend it to most of the peeps, because it is worth the 2,5 hour watch (with a 15 minute break). Some people will hate it, some won't (like meee). The effects are one of the best i've seen, and of course, unlike the most here, i didn't really focus on details. The movie isn't boring at all, and it will make you laugh a lot of times while you're in that theater. NOTE: By focusing on smaller details, such as caracteristics of the main caracters will only bore you more, and you should (if you haven't already) have watched the first part before watching this one, as it may result in you being bored and not getting the point of the well written plot. I'm just writing my opinion, and don't hate it pls :) I agree with IGN's 8,5 score.
Jaun7707 I agree. If the creator of Lord of the Rings, essentially is god (if not Tolkein himself, something to spend hours confusing yourself about) then Gandalf is an archangel, equivialnt to Gabriel or Lucifer. This explains why he was able to be resurrected as Gandalf the White in the second book.
Weaksauceization No, Morgoth would be Lucifer. Archangels would be the Valar, while Gandalf, Saruman and Radagast would belong to a lesser kind of divine entity. Sauron would be closer to the Maia (the wizards) but stronger. Like a sub-class.
I remember when IGN gave the first movie 8/10 (I think) and the video got so much hate for giving it a "low score"... :P Even I was kind of one of the haters, but after seeing the movie for more than one time, I agreed with it
Well, admittedly the pronunciation is not as spelt, so confusion is to be expected. That is to say, with reference to the English phonetic alphabet, Smaug is pronounced - smaʊg (i.e smawg), not smorg, or smog. The issue is further complicated by the fact that those who speak American-English, as opposed to English, elongate their vowels so that the phonetics of the spoken word can be easily confused. i.e. if vowels are elongated, smawg will sound like smarg. If ever there was a good example of a shibboleth, smaug is certainly it.
What do you mean Dragon? There is not a single Dragon in middle earth tush far, you have 9 black Wyverns and one red Wyvern called Smaug,Smoge...potato. A dragon has 2 legs, 2 arms and 2 wings. A wyvern has 2 legs and 2 wings that double as arms.
8.5?!? I am not joking when I say this so called "film" deserves a NEGATIVE 8.5. Desolation of too much time filler (smaug) is the worst film I have ever seen in my life, and this coming from a guy who has actually seen the last airbender. There is so much wrong with this so called film that I don't even know where to start. One of the biggest problems is the love triangle. You know that phrase "Still a better love story than Twilight" well congratulations Kristen Stewart you guys win this round. Like I stated in my own version of the title of this so called film, it has WAYYYY too much time filler. So much of the shit in this movie is put in simple to make it longer and into a trilogy. This includes the 9 minute bull shit scene with the spiders, the pathetic love story, the fake looking, overly choreographed barrel scene that went on for what felt like hours, the ship dude getting arrested for NO reason, even most of the scenes with Smaug were time filler. This movie is DOG SHIT!
Nick Rahman that's what people say when they have no argument against my claim. Sense I am right and you know it all you can say is "your a dumbass" without explaining which part of my statement is incorrect. Good going moron.
Michael Colby tell tht to the other people who agree with me, now i could agree tht the first hobbit movie sucked ass, but this movie, is better, way better than the last air bender or twilight, come on now, u can agree with me on tht
Nick Rahman Maybe I went to far when I said it was worse than The Last Airbender. But I am not joking when I said this so called film is 90% time filler. Every single scene is dragged out longer than it needs to be for the sake of time. The first Hobbit movie was not amazing, but it was a lot better than this pile of shit and I will tell you why. While it certainly was slow at times it looked and felt like the lord of the rings, you felt like Jackson still cared. In this so called film it feels lifeless.
Michael Colby it would of felt even more lifless, if he pulled out more things from, hobbit, but he added alot of things that werent mentioned in the book, like where was gandalf, when he was away from the company of 14, you may call the movie like dragging out, I call it informational, trust me, its not as bland as u think, I mean if your somewhat hardcore Tolkein fan, but not as hardcore of a fan like Steven Colbert
I always feel like IGN gives everything they rate a .5 less then they should. From how they decribed this movie, it sounded like a 9.0. They're pretty stingy with their numbers lol
i'd say this was more like a 7 or 6.5 out of 10. after 1.5 hours, i was hoping for the end, another hour later is was begging for it to wrap up. i'm not into the invented by the screen writers material. it seems like jackson is just trying to make it epic with no real backbone to make it such. i'd preferred 1 long movie of the book rather than 3 long super padded movies. not everything has to be a trilogy. i can't even imagine what the 3rd movie would be about. *spoilers* smaug is let loose upon the city at the end. only thing left here is to defeat it and head back home. but lets add 3 hours of filler made up side stories so it drags on even further!
Lackluster first film? I thought the first film was great and I can't wait to see this one. It looks amazing and fun. I never understood how people called a movie fun until the first one. It was like a ride that I enjoyed every second of. I never read the hobbit or the lord of the rings books but I did see the lord of the rings trilogy and so far it seems like the hobbit is going to be better imo. Don't get me wrong I really enjoyed the lord of the rings trilogy but the first movie was kind of boring. It definitely had its good parts but it was slow a lot of the movie too but once the other movies came out it made the first one better. The first hobbit wasn't slow to me and it was a good movie. I don't like when reviewers give movies bad ratings bc it wasn't what they expected or wanted. And I'm like the one commenter who said he thought this was going to get a 9 or 9.5 the way he was talking and like he said 8.5 is good. It just sounded like he liked it more than that.
So far what I've heard... The Desolation of Smaug has too many additions and changes from the books. Supposedly it was done to make it seem like a "true" prequel to the Lord of the Rings.
No it was done because they needed the hobbit to be a trilogy, and the whole trilogy thing was done for money. Come on dude, this is common sense stuff.
Unexpected Journey was very good in my opinion. It had some pacing problems and just wasn't as good as LOTR, but I believe Desolation of Smaug is at the same level of quality as LOTR. All Middle-earth fans must see this movie immediately!
I don't understand why so many people think all the deviations from the book are bad. Tolkien himself was going to rewrite the hobbit just before he died so it would be better matched up with TLOTR. I would think that he would actually like these movies, if he were alive to see them.
the one thing I didn't like about the book was how Smaug went out, when it got to the end it looked like Bilbo would get him and I wanted that to happen but its a shame that arrows going to get him in the film too
I've seen it yesterday, and I completely agree with this review. It's much better than the previous Hobbit film, although I liked that one as well. An Unexpected Journey is getting a little too much critisism if you ask me. But yeah, the second one is much better. Smaug is amazing, I don't think I've ever seen such a amesome dragon in a movie before.
My only real complaint about this movie is that I found the CGI at some points to be a bit grating, especially the melted gold at the end. It might have been partially because it was in 3D though haha.
I agree. the molten gold seemed a it fake. Also, some of the underwater shots during the barrel scene seemed a bit shoddy. On the whole, though, I thought it was very solid.
Why does everyone hate on something that's part of an older great series, so far I've seen zero problems with the hobbit films, there amazing so far and a great second trilogy.
For all you who think the third movie only has one battle left read the book. The final chapters of this book make Smaug look like a sub plot. Think Helms deep with five factions instead of two.
SPOILERS: my theory for the romance between kili and tauriel is to make it sadder for when kili dies, there will be another reason to feel sorry for him and his brother
This movie was alright, but saying it's better than the first is bullshit this movie felt really forced to me while I was watching it. While it hits all the right notes it feels like it loses the feeling of going on an adventure and does not up hold the quality of Peter Jackson's previous work in the series. 7/10
"Luke Evans shows up late in the game as Bard the Bowman, the stories only other noble human character besides Gandalf." Is this a simple mistake or an epic fail?. :)
The Lord of the Rings trilogy are my all time favorite movies. For some reason I couldn't get into the first Hobbit movie. Almost felt like they were trying too hard for drama and comedic relief. I really hope this movie turns that around!
I saw it in 3d today. The scenes looked like something you would see in the old doctor whos. Like stages. And the scenes with just the orcs looks like god of war in animation and graphics. Maybe it was just the 3d version because this looked better.
Michael Colby Yes, but it looks more like what LOTR movies look like sometimes. The 3D and 48 FPS made it look like the camera was facing down at a stage. The CGI was good at some parts though. especially the scene with Smaug.
Wait, if the regular film is already 3 hours, does that mean the extended cut will be 5 hours? I just finished watching the extended LOTR films... Each one spans over 2 bluray discs. Are the Hobbit films gonna use three?
Filler... what so take out the filler would it be better? NO, it was informational and necessary, the film is amazing i enjoyed every bit of it, its so watchable its unbelievable so far better than lotr ermmm i'd say on par sometimes even better and Smaug is truely scary and menacing.. If you find this boring but find the adventure/fantasy movies of the last 10 years fun and hope we have less of these great movies your crazy... Cinema would be boring without movies like this!
I actually thought it worse than the first. To energetic and action-loaded for my taste. It did not feel like middle earth, were has that atmosphere from lotr gone?
just watched it and absolutely loved it! if you like the first hobbit you'l love this part, so much better. And the ending couldnt have come at a more tense moment XD 'I AM FIRE, I AM DEATH!'
I love the first movie though i think this is one is better. everytime i watch the first film i quote almost every line when they say and i can't wait for the Battle of Five Armies in the 3rd and final film
In the entire review you don't mention the music? common now. This isn't even a full review without mentioning how epic the soundtracks are in all Peter Jackson movies.
Saw it last night. I couldn't believe how utterly padded and vacuous this film was. When it ended, rather than an atmosphere of an amazing experience shared, the crowd was totally deflated and seemed a tad embarrassed to have witnessed (and paid for) such a debacle. It doen't matter how nice a meal looks, if it tastes like shit then it is shit. I have loved the Hobbit since I was 7 (32 years ago) and this should never have been made. If only Ralph Bakshi had had a chance to direct this..
I disagree. While I acknowledge that there were a ton of things that were expanded on, pulled from other pieces of text, or even outright fabricated by the movie makers, I respect the vast majority of the changes. I believe that if Tolkien had ever gone back and completely re-written The Hobbit after he wrote LOTR (he expressed interest in doing this several times, but never acted on it before he died), he would have made many subtle thematic changes without really changing the plot of the story, much as was done in this movie. A great example is where the main adversary is coming from: rather than being random groups of goblins coming out of the Misty Mountains o the Battle of the Five Armies, it appears that it will be a more unified force, sent by Sauron (the Necromancer). While the plot of the story does not change (there is still a big battle at the end of the story against evil creatures, the whole story takes on a darker tone, because you begin to get a sense that there is a power behind all this seeking world domination--a theme which is fully revealed later in the LOTR. I respect most of the "major" changes that were made in this movie much more than I do most of those made in the first Hobbit, or even a lot of the changes in the LOTR movies. Of course, this is just my opinion, but I would like to think that I am qualified to formulate a good one...
Gandalf ain't a human.
Just so you know Gandalf isn't human, he is Maiar.
I was enjoying the review but when he said that it irritated me lol
Yeah, That what I was saying. Really annoying.
Smoge, Smaug, Smowg, Smoog, I don't think I have heard so many different pronunciations in such a short time period.
He also called Thorin Thor once.
***** It isn't pronounced Smarg? I has an A in it.
SOEL86 No, it (as a matter of FACT) is pronounced "Spoge", not "Smawg".
After watching it it's pronounced 'Bollocks'.
Why does everyone hate on the first Hobbit movie?!? it was really really good...
1st film was better than the 2nd in my opinion. Too much brainless and unnecessary violence in the 2nd film, and if you think about it, there were far more memorable scenes in the 1st film.
This movie was god awful how are you people seriously praising it.
I don't even know why I'm watching this, I'm a gigantic lord of the rings fan so I'm going to love hell out of this movie regardless of the reviews.
smoog smoog, it's SMAUG for gods sake!
Glad I'm not alone, that kept pissing me off to, almost got it right at the very end.
reviewer is trolling, says it right at 0.30
It is pronounced like sm-ow-g.
no, smaug! with an 'au', not an 'o'!
***** The au is pronounced the same as in 'now'. There is a Hobbit production diary where there is a dialect coach who talks about it.
Did he actually just say Gandalf is human -_________-
He is he's not an animal anyway
-________________- Gandalf = Wizard. Wizard = Wizard. Human = Human.
***** wrong. Gandalf is an Istari
Time sure moves fast nowadays.
Does not feel like its been a whole year since i saw the first Movie at all.
Now it has been 8 years
Great!! can't wait to see it!!
WROOOOOOOONG!!!
Patrick Ward You completely changed my mind.
Patrick Ward I agree he is soooooo wrooooong.
I thought a 9 even 9.5 the way he was going on about how good it was, don't get me wrong 8.5 is great.
The first one was terribad.
No it wasn't, it was just building up this one, it will all make sense soon.
Sean Mckillop it will make sense? So you didnt understand what happened in the entire first movie....? D:
XEROBEAT no. I'm saying it will all make sense to the first film being so slow.
they have been giving the last 4 AC games an 8.5 , they just dont give 9's anymore
I don't care what the reviewer says about the first Hobbit, I actually liked that movie! And I can't wait to see how it's sequels (including this one) turn out!
Choose a way to say Smaug. You go back and forth throughout.
There needs to be a spoof. China: Desolation of Smog.
lol
Hey, I would just like to say I am fking excited for this movie.
Already have a gigantic joint rolled. Which I will wrap in a beautiful ribbon and call Madame Gange until this movie comes out.
Really, IGN? I bet if Call of Duty made a shitty film you'd give it and its 39 sequels a 10.
The Hobbit wasn't "shitty" though. It definitely wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible either. I enjoyed it despite its flaws.
I'd like you all to direct your attention to Appendix E of the Lord of the Rings, Smaug is pronounced smOWg, the reviewer was pronouncing it properly.
But for the most part he was pronouncing it sm-oh-guh (like the letter o, see 0:23) ... but then he pronounces it sm-ah-guh (like smog, see 0:30). Nowhere does he pronounce it sm-ow-guh (ow as in allow).
He wasn't, AU in LOTR has a sound as in "now" or "ouch" or "allow". Hence why Sauron is pronounced with that sound, and Smaug is too.
I enjoyed the first one more than the LotR films, so I am very excited for this.
Just came back from the cinema and I have to say that the movie is great. It didn't happen that I yawned a single time during the film, nor that I cared about the love between Kili and that girl... If you could say smaug correctly that would be great ;)
That is actually how it is supposed to be said, everyone else (including myself) says it wrong
He is pronouncing it correctly.
literally everybody I have ever known personally has said it like Smawg. But... ehh whatever. tomato, potato, bromato, tobago.
He is... it's pronounced smowg, ow as in the synonym for ouch!
He says it in 2 different ways, i heard "Smohg", "Smorg". Both are wrong, its Smaug, like with a "now" sound in the middle
Can't wait for next year too, TBo5A and conclusion to them all. The Unexpected ending for whom who don't read the book.
gandalf is a human? are wizards human?
he is istari...god like spirit things lol (that take the form of old dudes for some reason)
Gandalf isn't a human, he is a Maia. Essentially it's kinda like a demi god.
Entreri187 I'd say they are more analogous the angels of the Bible. An example would be Morgoth and Lucifer.
Jaun7707 I agree. If the creator of Lord of the Rings, essentially is god (if not Tolkein himself, something to spend hours confusing yourself about) then Gandalf is an archangel, equivialnt to Gabriel or Lucifer.

stop saying smoag, it's smaug.
Unexpected Journey: 6 out of 10
Desolation of Smaug: 6.5 out of 10
What are they talking about? I loved the first movie
I remember when IGN gave the first movie 8/10 (I think) and the video got so much hate for giving it a "low score"... :P Even I was kind of one of the haters, but after seeing the movie for more than one time, I agreed with it
Smaug! not Smoug!!!
He's American, go easy.
Matthew Applegate It can't be difficult to say Smaug.

For me the movie wasent long enough, I wish it was longer, it was so great
it was three hours long and still had to put FILLER FILLER it was just bad.
ian setzer The movie should have been called Desolation of way to much filler
Michael Colby Lol u must be mad. Eat shit!
What do you mean Dragon?
There is not a single Dragon in middle earth tush far, you have 9 black Wyverns and one red Wyvern called Smaug,Smoge...potato.

I always feel like IGN gives everything they rate a .5 less then they should. From how they decribed this movie, it sounded like a 9.0. They're pretty stingy with their numbers lol
'Smoge'? You mean 'Smaug'?
That Smoge is beastly
Smog? Really?
Sorry for being nerdy but Gandalf isn't human.
Who's Smowg, it's Smauwg

Nico Leu not a lt happened in the 3rd movie. 2 hours of straight action sequences
I believe smaug is pronounced 'swag'
Hobbits, Elves, Dwarves, Dragons, orcs, ents, humans .. yes!!
giant spiders no
"Smoge" It's pronounced SMAwUG, (for future reference.)
This looks like a lot of fun! I loved the book and I think Martin did an amazing job in the first movie bringing my favourite hero ever to life ^_^
Lackluster first film? I thought the first film was great and I can't wait to see this one. It looks amazing and fun. I never understood how people called a movie fun until the first one. Really can't wait! So close now!
I found it funny how they called it "The Desolation of Smaug" because you only see a little climse of the city of Dale.
If you really think last year's film was "lackluster", I can't wait to see what this movie brings to the table.
He's Maiar, but yeah, they can be. It's just a skill attained from birth or learned.
This is reassuring to hear. I was going to see it anyway but I'm happy that it's viewed as superior to the first, as it wasn't great.
Unexpected Journey was very good in my opinion. It had some pacing problems and just wasn't as good as LOTR, but I believe Desolation of Smaug is at the same level of quality as LOTR. All Middle-earth fans must see this movie immediately!
One of the best looking, sounding, and thrilling movies I have ever seen in my life!

This is nice and all. Only thing that irks me is that Gandalf is NOT human.
Great review guys

Gandalf is not human. He's wizard.
Went to the midnight premiere and the movie was great ! Smaug was a badass, the she elf an legolas were Badass, bilbo was badass.
The 3ed film will be the ultimate fight of five armies! Smaugs death will only be the forplay.
My only real complaint about this movie is that I found the CGI at some points to be a bit grating, especially the melted gold at the end.
It might have been partially because it was in 3D though haha.

Point of information: Gandalf isn't a human.
(Smuh-au-guh) and (tarr-ee-el)
Also does anyone know what we will see Bolg doing in this film?
Oooo can't wait to see it next Friday!!! Smauggggg!!!
For all you who think the third movie only has one battle left read the book. The final chapters of this book make Smaug look like a sub plot. Think Helms deep with five factions instead of two.
I wish Jackson would have made The Hobbit in one movie that followed the book as well as The Lord of the Ring movies followed their books.
SPOILERS: my theory for the romance between kili and tauriel is to make it sadder for when kili dies, there will be another reason to feel sorry for him and his brother
Just watched it, it was so amazing, I loved it, can't wait for the next
This movie was alright, but saying it's better than the first is bullshit this movie felt really forced to me while I was watching it. While it hits all the right notes it feels like it loses the feeling of going on an adventure and does not up hold the quality of Peter Jackson's previous work in the series. 7/10
"Luke Evans shows up late in the game as Bard the Bowman, the stories only other noble human character besides Gandalf."
Is this a simple mistake or an epic fail?. :)
Since when is Gandalf a human? In this world, there is a distinguished difference between men and wizards...
The Lord of the Rings trilogy are my all time favorite movies. For some reason I couldn't get into the first Hobbit movie. Almost felt like they were trying too hard for drama and comedic relief. I really hope this movie turns that around!
The hobbit (the book) it's less gritty. More child-oriented.
See, non-believers? We just needed a little more faith in Pete and Comp.
I saw it in 3d today. The scenes looked like something you would see in the old doctor whos. Like stages. And the scenes with just the orcs looks like god of war in animation and graphics. Maybe it was just the 3d version because this looked better.
No it was not, I just saw it today in 2d and it looked HORRIBLE! Most of it looks like PS2 graphics.
Michael Colby Yes, but it looks more like what LOTR movies look like sometimes. The 3D and 48 FPS made it look like the camera was facing down at a stage. The CGI was good at some parts though. especially the scene with Smaug.
Alex Ross I disagree completely, I thought Smaug looked like the dragon from Shrek. I almost bursted out laughing in the theatre when I saw him
Michael Colby I know. I didn't say he was the best looking dragon. But his scene was the one I enjoyed the most.
Alex Ross to each his own, I am not even going to give the movie that much credit.
Interesting. I didn't know Gandalf was human...
The way he says Benedict sounds funny
question, will we get to see more of the Necromancer?
The Hobbit Fact: The lady Elf, Tauriel, Died.
..When did Jackson ever make a "painstaking recreation of the source material"? That's a laugh and a half.
The mighty Dragon: Smoke
LMAO
I actually thought it worse than the first. To energetic and action-loaded for my taste. It did not feel like middle earth, were has that atmosphere from lotr gone?
The Hobbit movies are like the new star wars prequels only with good acting
Cant wait!
the way he said smaug made me cringe
IF YOU DON'T LOVE THE HOBBIT OR LORD OF THE RINGS MOVIES, YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY 15 OR YOUNGER.. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE KIDS NOWADAYS?
Good to hear it's better than the 1st
just watched it and absolutely loved it! if you like the first hobbit you'l love this part, so much better. And the ending couldnt have come at a more tense moment XD
'I AM FIRE, I AM DEATH!'
I love the first movie though i think this is one is better. everytime i watch the first film i quote almost every line when they say and i can't wait for the Battle of Five Armies in the 3rd and final film
Can't Wait!!!
In the entire review you don't mention the music? common now. This isn't even a full review without mentioning how epic the soundtracks are in all Peter Jackson movies.
This movie is a 10/10, a masterpiece!
0:26 looks like a scene straight outta harry potter
