The French Verb Faillir in Less Than 5 Minutes

- Today's French lesson is all about the verb FAILLIR in French. Faillir doesn't really have an exact translation in English, at least not as a verb. In French, faillir means "To almost do something." It's always followed by an infinitive verb and primarily conjugated in the passé composé with avoir.

In Old and Middle French "faillir" used to mean "to fail", and this sense is retained to date in formal speech as "faillir à qch''(=to fall short of sth).
Thank you :)
I'm currently taking beginner french in college as an online course and I have to say it's been a nightmare. Thank you for posting all of these videos, I cannot begin to tell you how helpful it has been for me. You make thing's so much easier to understand, and it helps me feel like I'm not drowning as much.
Go to my website and get the self-study guide. All the lessons you should follow are listed :) That will help you a lot :)
I'm wondering what do you find nightmarish? The grammar is much easier than English. Only the pronunciation is more difficult and not that much. This is a more logical and direct language than English
It is super beneficial to have these explanations of French grammar in English. And your English is parfait! Thanks so much!
Thank you so much 😍 It makes me feel better about my English
Very challenging but also very interesting lesson and exercise, thank you Madame Dylane, great work! 👍
You're so welcome!
I will be waiting for ur class
greatly useful. I enjoyed. Thanks 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Bjr Dylane ! Est-ce qu'on peut utiliser "presque" à la place de faillir ? Si on changeait un peu la structure des phrases, bien sûr. Mci pour la vidéo !
Dylane, please correct me if I am wrong. I believe that "Presque" is used to indicate that something is close to happening and will eventually happen. While "faillir" is used to indicate that something almost happened, but didn't. In the following sentence it would be wrong to replace “a failli” with “presque”: “Hitler a failli réussi à gagner la Seconde Guerre mondiale”
Thor is correct but I think we simply use Faillir more in daily French. Ask a francophone to tell you the difference and they will have no idea :D
Very helpful! You are the best. 🙂
Merci 🤩
The same in english would be 'nearly' e.g. I nearly missed my train. As usual, a great lesson.
I have been pursuing English literature and come across with the sense that French is very much expressive language. However, i found your voice much interesting without knowing anything of french. Now, i am listening and listening to have the sound in my core beautiful portion of heart. Honestly, every time i listen to you, i fall in love with you. So, petrachan is in nature.😊❤
☺️
Alor, Propose her 😂
I understood this. Faillir

Why can't we use adverb Presque like in English ?
My God, I thought I know French, I guess there is a lot more French for me to learn. I just noticed that RATER and MANQUER = To Miss, but they have different use.
As always, I love your video and your explanation. It's clear and concise. Thank you and Thank you.
You could use presque too :) But Faillir is more used in daily French :)
Merci beaucoup, Dylane!
Merci à toi :)
Great job
Keep it up
Thank you, I will

Pas de quoi :)
Thanks a lot.

Useful! And I think easy to remember as "fail" which is what happens when you "almost" do something.
True :D
This may sound unbelievable but yesterday I was wondering what does "almost" mean in French and I didn't look it up. Then I found out that you made a video about it today which made me surprised. thank you so much for your explanation, you are the best
Perfect timing :D

Excellent video thank you, I'm still a little confused on when to use 'Presque' vs 'Faillir' do you happen to have a video comparing the two?

Thank you
Est-ce que vous êtes marié ?

Genial Dylane. J'ai failli voir Taylor Swift en concert aux Arenes de Nimes en 2020 mais il a ete annulé a cause de la covid 😪
C'est vraiment pas de chance :(
Means it's similar to English Almost?
The translation but in French it's a verb, not in English :)
@@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane Oh! I see , I got it, It's similar in Portuguese 'Falhar'
In English, it could be translated as, "I fell short of."
Thanks :)
