"When a final girl sets traps instead of running from the killer, that put her higher on the list" Like Nancy in the 1st Elm Street movie?
Yup. If she didn't set those traps, she'd be in the "went to the creepy basement" tier ;)
I'm with ya on this logic!! Lol!! Someone needs to figure out what they mean. ha! Erin and Nancy set traps to outsmart, Sidney ran up the stairs...uh...yeah. I mean Erin did everything, she totally deserved at the top.
Was about to comment this lol
@@stacylee0521sure sidney ran up the stairs but she developed to fighting back viciously at the end of each movie til scream 4 where she started to let the killers have fun with trying to kill her cause she knows it’ll never happen and she’s always one step agead
Nancy being so low killed me…
I agree that Tree is a bad final girl, but that is the point. Every time she gets killed, she becomes a better person. I love that arc. That scene with her father.... made me really tear up. So therefore she doesn’t really belong in this list. You’re free Tree haha
There's also the fact that she's mostly the only target of the killer in her movie. And she does make a lot of mistakes but she always learn from her deaths. That's what makes her an interesting final girl in my mind. She's dying a lot but each time she dies, she analyze every step of her deaths to try to pin the killer. She had a huge list of potential people that could have killed her and the twist on who was the killer was a pretty good one in my opinion. Not the biggest twist but a pretty good twist. I also love how she literally used her killer's weapon against it.
That she has no idea who the killer is excuses all her failures. She has to go through the process, it's part of the whole point. I don't think that should be counted against her.
But, I agree that being the only target probably would make me not include her in the discussion at all.
Ripley from 'Alien' would be my top final girl and she was never a ditz or a damsel in distress. She was intelligent, had no tolerance for BS or lies, was resourceful, and deserved to be the final survivor. :)
My thoughts exactly. You have stolen my thoughts perfectly. How dare you ;)
Plus the movie started by subtly priming us for a male hero, until Ripley stepped up and became the protagonist. Great choice.
Sidney is my favorite from the slasher genre
im shocked she didnt rank the woman from the hunt!
Yes Ripley would kick all these other woman's assesss
I think the 2018 Halloween sequel shows why Laurie is actually a great final girl, she's really badass in that one. And my favorite is probably Sidney Prescott. I also like Needy from Jennifer's Body, which I guess is not a super popular choice but I think she qualifies.
Scream is probably my favorite horror series
Laurie and Sidney are the best overall final girls when you look at the entire series. First “Final Girls” wouldn’t even be a think if it wasn’t for these two. Laurie is one of the originals and Sidney (much like Scream did to the genre) redefined what a final girl is
I agree
You'd think for 40 years she'd be more prepared though...
@@j2174but can you ever really fully prepare for fighting michael myers? she was well prepared enough
This is a fantastic list! I will have to say, I think you did Nancy dirty. I would rank her higher because throughout her film, she investigates why Freddy is killing everyone, is proactive in her fight against him, and displays great cleverness and is insightful to what is going on around her. She's definitely top tier along with Sidney because, for me, she set the foundation for more progressive final girls. I would even argue that she's a prototype for Sidney in some ways, but that's a take for another day. Her character is actually written very well when you analyze her background and apply it to how she uses what she herself has experienced to fighting against Freddy. Other than that, I really love your rankings and I thank you for including Michelle from 10 Cloverfield Lane, Adelaide from Us, and Grace from Ready or Not. They are great examples of action heroines and I loved all of them in their respective films.
Sydney Prescott was my original concept of the final girl.
I want to give a shout-out to Kirsty Cotton from the Hellraiser series because she lowkey had Pinhead whipped.
Thank you!
I think Nancy did way better than "all right" given the entire context. She is only supposed to be 15/16 ish so she lacks the of life experience or training that someone like Ripley or Erin. And her killer stalks her in her dreams putting her into state of severe sleep deprivation. Much easier to have a real-world character like ghostface where people believe you, help you and you can empty a chamber in their skull to kill them. Look how Freddy reacts to Nancy in 3...he is so pissed to see her lol. Figuring out to pull from the dream into the real world was aces "Worthy Survivor" territory.
Agree with Laurie though...it isnt the first movie but her growth over the franchise that places her into Scream Queen tier.
YES!! 10 Cloverfield Lane is such an underrated movie
Agreed !
It feels like war of the world's.
That girl was crazy smart omg
Your ranking of Nancy is way off. She went full Kevin McAllister on Freddy, then defeated him by having the strength to stop being afraid of him and turning her back and walking away
Like I said, she's not bad and she gets better later in the film, but I don't think she's as strong of a character as the ones I ranked higher.
Thank you for the Samara Weaving/Grace love. The ultimate perfect Final girl and my favorite. Adore her and the film. :)
Aww I'm loving all this Samara Weaving appreciation in my comments)))
I'm going to be honest, if I had to pick a final girl to fight alongside with it would be Erin from You're Next.
BEST ONE EVER
I agree. You're Next is my favorite. 2nd goes to Ready or Not.
The irony of Dana from Cabin in the Woods landing in “deserves a sequel” is well played.
Ripley is my Scream Goddess.
Picking a least favourite is too hard, because I tend not to remember the characters as much, especially if I don't enjoy the movie.
Laurie in mid tier and adelaide in top tier is just laughable. Even the reasoning, considering the twist should disqualify her. Laurie is where the troupe came from and is the original scream queen.
Nice video but I'm a bit surprised final girls from Black Christmas, Wrong Turn, Venom, The Breed, Hellraiser, Suspiria, Wishmaster, Final Destination were not even mentioned
Happy to see Michelle and Adelaide on the list! Us and 10 Cloverfield Lane are literally my 2 favorite horror films of all time!
Yesss! Awesome movies, but super under-appreciated leads when it comes to final girl status!
Hot take: Ready or Not cemented Samara Weaving as the best scream queen of all time.
I like this take ))
I wouldn’t say all time, but definitely of our generation so far.
Easily. She has the best scream ever. Sounds primal as shit.
I can see your logic and reasoning behind many of these final girls, and I think your list was well put together. I am, however, surprised, that none of the suggestions mentioned "Ginny" from Friday the 13th Part 2. This final girl is by far the favorite of the fans in the whole franchise and gets listed as the most liked in numerous lists. If you've seen the film, then I would love to hear your thoughts on her. Personally, I believe she deserves the category of Scream Queen for a number of reasons.
I think it's that a lot of people have only seen the first Friday the 13th movie.
Laurie Strode has always been my favorite final girl and nothing will ever change that. 💪🏼
My favorite is Sidney from Scream. What are your expectations for Scream 5?
Haha poor Tree. I like her.
Sorryyyy, I just can't get behind her character 🙈 I don't have very hight expectations fro "Scream 5", I never do for sequels, but the directing duo behind "Ready or Not" are giving me hope!
@@ImpressionBlend Haha, it's ok. We can't all like the same things. Oh, I didn't know it was them directing. Cool!
The final girl in The Green Room has one of the most underrated last lines in a movie.
When I saw the title of the video, I literally started screaming at my phone "Ripleeeeey, Ripleeeeey"!
Of course Ripley is the ultimate final girl.
We need more Ripleys in horror movies.
And Samara Weaving? She's perfect in Ready or not.
I'm glad we agree ))
This was so much fun! I agree with pretty much every placement here and really love Ridley, Sarah, and Grace. One more I’d shout out is Kirsty from Hellraiser, who manages to outwit a legion of Cenobites.
Thank you! You know, I'm surprised nobody brought up "Hellraiser" when I asked for favorites - expected to see that one among the classics. Need to revisit that film myself.
I love that you have your own opinions about these characters! You didn’t just listen to other people’s opinions and I admire you for that! By the way love your rankings!!!!!!
The lack of logic and consistency is insane.
So let's go to your first logic fallacy.
You put Nancy in the 'needs another sequel" category.
Oh really? Like in A Nightmare On Elm street 3 or a New Nightmare?
Then you claim she was not active enough?
But then praise Erin for her booby traps.
Oh you like booby traps? Like drawing out the killer from their comfort zone? Like the stairs? Like setting him on fire? Like proactively learning his power, his abilities?
Seriously everything you praised Erin for you can easily give Nancy the same praise. In-fact, Srin was trained, she didn't work these traps out for herself. She already had these skills.
Nancy was learning throughout the movie. Honestly, Nancy in 1 defeated Freddy single handedly with her intelligence. She didn't fight him. She used her intelligence.
Then go to Nightmare on Elm Street 3. When she comes face to face with Freddy for a second time. Freddy's reaction was one of fear. He knew how dangerous she was. "YOU........"
She went from being a person fighting for her life, to a leader, a mother and her strength inspired the kids in the 3rd one to fight for themselves. They had all but given up, but it was Nancy's who pushed them to fight for themselves.
So no, you are absolutely wrong about Nancy.
She shows development consistently.
And then you put Laurie in the same category.
Um...
Halloween
Halloween 2
Halloween H20.
Halloween resurrection.
Shallow 07
Halloween 09
Halloween 2018
Halloween kills
Halloween ends.
Yeah she is in a lot more than just 1.
So you can't put5 a character that features in half the series in such a category. It makes 0 sense.
You want to only acknowledge the 1st movie. Fine, but then don't use an illogical category for mid tier.
And by the way why is a person making mistakes so bad? The beet way to learn is by making mistakes.
Laurie did a lot to save herself and the kids. She used her intellect and was very resourceful.
Your reasoning made such little sense.
So she was not the one who xhot him 6 times? Oh, ok. Well even though Loomis was the one who shot him. Michael still did not die.
In-fact, everyone in halloween barely survives.
There are only 2 Halloween movies where everyone survives strongly. Halloween H20 and halloween ends. And in both movies it was Laurie who took the fight to Michael. So.......... Yeah a very poor reasoning to your list.
Next time just say this is who i like and whom i vibe with, instead of trying to put these ridiculous and easily dispprovable reasons.
i know everyone has their opinion but she was weird. She would put an icon character in mid and rank a mid character high. i was confused. also she doesn't like friday the 13th, halloween, but she likes scream. it's very weird taste for me.
Great list and video. Erin suprice me and my friend when we saw You're Next. She took being a bad ass to a new level.
And wow, this video is overloaded with beauty 😊
I totally love Sydney over the past four movies she has evolved I also love Erin in your next a true survivor and laurie from the Halloween franchise especially the last movie she was a bad ass 🤩 and grace love her
Olivia Hussey from the original Black Christmas should be here 😭 Probably in my top 3 final girls.
Same she pretty much made the final girl trope
Ikr
WONDERFUL video and topic. A personal fav list so far! :D Personal fav Final Girls:
Official #1) Sidney Prescott
2) Ripley (my fav paper from college was actually on ‘Aliens’ and Ripley-obsessed with this character)
3) Grace from ‘Ready or Not’. I can’t pretend to know anything much beyond this observation, but I thought there were some interesting biblical imagery going on with her character (SPOILERS: even when she looks in the mirror-although saying it as a hilarious line-she says “Jesus Christ...” Also gets a nail through her hand). Am totally possibly reading too far into it, I realize lol
Will next check out ‘You’re Next’ and revisit ‘The Descent’ (been too long). And Lupita Nyong’o was TOTALLY snubbed at the Oscars. Right up with Toni Collette in ‘Hereditary’, a criminal snub
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed! Add Jessie Buckley for "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" to the snub list... The Oscars continue to ignore horror films, no matter how amazing the performances are. Toni Collette deserved a supporting actress nomination this year for "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" too, tbh.
@@ImpressionBlend absolutely! I was completely perplexed that they just kind of fell off the “Oscar buzz” conversation. They are absolutely incredible and beyond amazing and memorable in that crazily undersung film
"Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon" has an interesting twist on the final girl trope. A meta film that is influenced by "Man Bites Dogs" as much as Friday The 13th. BTW..."Ready Or Not" is brilliant and has one of the best ending lines of dialogue in movie history. You know the one.
I agree! I love meta horror, and that one examined slasher tropes in an interesting way.
personally i never find the final girls as interesting as all the other characters but sidney and grace are legends and i would die for both of them but i would also count gale weathers as a final girl and i love her
I consider Terminator 1 a horror movie and even Terminator 2 (and because the others are not that is why they mostly failed)
Sarah Connor - worthy survivor.
Honorable mention : Shorty from Scary movie.
Agreed re Terminator
Its 2:00 AM? I was planning on going to bed ! btw side note - I think you would like The Only Good Indians Book!
Actually just recently added that one to my to-read list! So I think you're onto something)))
I second that book suggestion
I just love Grace from Ready or Not, Sarah from The Descent, Suzy from Suspiria, Ginny from Friday the 13th 2, Stretch from Texas Chainsaw 2, Joey from Hellraiser 3, Ripley, Sidney, Epps from ghost Ship, Annie from Candyman 2, Erin from the Texas Chainsaw remake, Erin from You're Next, Tina from Friday the 13th 7, Carly from House of Wax, Nina form Wrong Turn 2, Aubrey from Silent night, and Taylor from Leslie Vernon
Sally : You took everything from me !!
Leatherface: I don’t even know who you are ???!!
Just started this but I sure hope you have Sue from "Carrie" in this list (original version, obv.)
24:00 Hey hey! Put some more respect on Happy Death Day! She’s incredible and has the best redemption arc. She’s not horrible. I’d say Happy Death Day 2 isn’t the best movie but the first one real shined
Really not a fan of "Happy Death Day", sorry. Cool idea, but it just didn't work for me, unfortunately.
@@ImpressionBlend understandable. I’m just a Happy Death Day Stan so it hurt my heart a bit 😭
I wish more people would give Jada’s character Jeryline from tales from the crypt demon knight more props.Always thought she was bad ass
100% Could not agree more. They set out to make a campy Tales From the Crypt movie and they stumbled into a great movie and a kickass final girl.
I don't know if Thomasin really finds her own way out of the situation at the end of The Witch. Without going into spoilers, what other option did she really have? I thought the ending was supposed to be really tragic and dark, not triumphant. I mean, she looks happy at the end and she is laughing but my interpretation of that final shot of her is that she doesn't understand how much she's just sacrificed in exchange for her "freedom". There's also the strong implication that she's not particularly sane anymore at this point.
SPOILERS
What I meant was that unlike most final girls, she joined the dark side.
That's not a turn you see very often.
I know this is probably one that more people would say action comedy then horror but I enjoyed Final Girl Kate Fuller from Dusk Till Dawn. Classified as Action Crim Horror on IMBD.
This is the quality content I signed up for 😌
Hehe thank you, I'm glad you like it!
The descent one of my favorites and Cabin in the woods also. I agree pretty much with everything.
Props for bringing up Hush. Can't agree less about Nancy and Laurie so Iconic. I feel like like you may have judged these specific characters more on vibes and personal preference than a consistent metric. I was happy to have a well thought out and articulated video about final girls, though. Will definitely watch more of your videos.
Sally! 😪 lol, I can see why she's that low. She's actually my 5th favorite final girl. It was also recently announced that her character is returning for the new TCM movie. I hope they do her character justice.
Great video!! Hush (Mike Flanagan) has my favorite final girl.
Thank you! Yes, she is awesome!
I was waiting the entire video for you to mention #19. I was almost going to lose faith in humanity until you finally mentioned her, that movie got me into horror and a big part of that is because of her.
Couldn't have this list without Grace)))
@@ImpressionBlend Hi Marianna, in Alone (2020), Jessica holds up pretty well. I recommend watching it!
Amy Harper (Elizabeth Berridge) in The Funhouse.
She's not very resourceful, but she's adorable...and, against all odds she survives the night.
Hunting Emma, and Revenge. The Descent has two endings Sara does not do to well depending the version. It seems some of these final girls also die in the films as I recall (no spoilers)
Hey Marianna I really appreciate your opinionated opinions. ("No. Just no.") Always well reasoned, even when I might quibble. Thanks for sharing again. If I were on Instagram I'd have made a few suggestions. But that's okay. I've got no specific axes to grind.
I 100% agree with this entire list! I think Grace has honestly become my favorite final girl everrr
Grace is such a BOSS! Love her!
When you mentioned ur tiers and said the basement one, all I could think abt was Tatum (Ik she’s not a final girl), but cuz you mentioned silly mistakes, all I could think abt was her going through the cat door in the garage💀😭
Had I know what a final girl was when you posted the question I would have gone with Sarah from the Descent. Glad she wasn't left out.
Unpopluar opinion: I love a resourceful final girl but I also love the screw up. I think surviving by accident is a skill within itself lol. Also I hope we can get more diverse final girls in the future it is my favorite troupe. Also also would you consider Dani from Midsummer to be a final girl?
My favorite final girl is Ann from Funny Games.
There's a term in certain sub-genres of romance fiction: TSTL. This is an acronym for Too Stupid To Live.
Glad to see some of my absolute favorite final girls way up on the list!! I thought about two more names that may be considered final girls. Clare from The Nightingale and Beatrix Kiddo from Kill Bill. Where would they rank on the list?
I think Clare would definitely count! Don't know about Beatrix though, since "Kill Bill" isn't really a horror movie... but as a character type I think she totally fits.
You lost me at Laurie strode( I do kinda get it but when you watch it at 4 she sticks with you.)but you got me back at Alice because she is absolutely horrible.
same lmfao
Erin could take on all The Final Girls. She'd be the one they have to get away from
I have to mention Lena from Annihilation. Annihilation is such an underrated horror movie and the things she experienced in that movie…I can’t imagine!
Yes!! Final girls from 10 Cloverfield Lane, Us, Ready or Not and Hush are my absolute faves! Though I'd have to rewatch some of the older movies, it's been a while haha
Outstanding video and such a nice treat!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Speaking of the bottom tier featuring undeserving survivors, I was reminded of two final female contestants on 'Survivor' that had to compete against each other with a make-a-fire challenge and neither one of them could build a fire from scratch, they never made one during their entire time on 'Survivor', and thus, neither of them deserved to win the million dollar prize at the end as far as I was concerned.
I'm holding for future movies to give us more final girls of color and other representation
My favorite is definitely Naru from Prey (new predator movie)
Maddie from hush is an only girl tho.
I despise Julie. I was rooting for Helen the whole time 😭
Samara Weaving was also great in Mayhem (and made me think she could have played Harley Quinn)
Oooh that's a great idea. So obvious once I hear it.
My favorites:
1. You're Next, Alien/Aliens
2. Ready or Not
3. Scream
4. Happy Death Day, It Follows
Tommy Jarvis is actually the final girl of the Friday the 13th franchise. I forgot there were characters other than Jason, Pamela, and him. I'm always like Alice? Who's Alice?
Yay. Sarah made it Scream Queen. I totally agree. 100%. She and Ripley would survive any monster, psycho, alien out there. Thanks for the video.
Wendy from The Shining deserves, at least, a ranking. Maybe not a slasher, of course, but Wendy's a final girl.
I can't consider Adelaide a final girl with the twist. I also don't consider Jay from It follows a final girl.
How do we feel about Veronica from Final Girl? Movie definitely has some flaws, but she is pretty badass!
The funny thing about Dena is that she literally went to a creepy basement
Scream Queens should have to appear in at least two of the films. That's the full title. Erin is more of a badass than anyone from Us.
Since you're including single targets: Audrey Hepburn's Susy in Wait Until Dark. Blows Hush away, in my opinion.
I so agree on the spot you gave Erin (Sharni Vinson). She needs to be in more movies to get herself more noticed and developed. Then she will be on her way to being in the "Scream Queen" category.
Fav Final Girl: Sigourney Weaver
Least Fav: Amy Steel
Hello
The greatest final girl is Ashley Williams! Hail to the King Baby!
I enjoyed your list keep up the good work
Thank you!
How bout Ivy Walker (Bryce Dallas Howard) from The Village? I haven't watched it in a while, but I think she might have a chance to make the list.
You are one of, if not my favorite film reviewer!
Julie definitely isnt went to the creepy basement, should be higher
Alice put up a fantastic fight in the first film, she beheaded the villian!! Through all that trauma. She’s underrated.
that’s not the point i think most people mean or make when it comes to her. i think it’s just the fact that she does nothing all throughout the movie until she’s the last one left. it’s not executed good and the fact that each friday the 13th movie has a different final girl makes it hard to connect to each one. plus she got very lucky with the beach fight with ms. voorhees cause she could’ve easily been slashed to death with the machete but someone had to live and it just happened to be her
Watched this right now & wondering which category you'd put Noa from Fresh?
Laurie is easily scream queens
As much as you kept saying you're only basing it off the first film you also kept saying if they had another movie they could be more iconic and potentially move up. I like the video but can we keep the criteria consistent. Lol.
Nina from wrong turn 2 is one of my favs
Where’s my Sue Snell from Carrie?
15:22 Did you watch the movie?
Sydney Prescott is goated! I think my favorite final girl is between Sydney, Sarah Connor, and Erin from You’re Next. My least favorite is the annoying girl from Halloween 5
Sally hardesty is my favourite
Absolutely loved this video. I’m such a screen queen girl !!
Love me some spooky !
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
Laurie in Halloween: 20 Years Later is the best.
Sally deserves better 😤 she is a LITERAL scream queen. I mean the term got coined from the horror main girls who would scream and yet the ones you choose, YOUR FAVORITE RIPLEY DOESN'T EVEN SCREAM LIKE THAT C'MON! 😤😤😤😤
My favorite final-girl is Crystal in The Hunt .
Thomasin should not be on this list. She is not directly targeted by dark forces, she is chosen by them and ultimately seduced by them. Makes absolutely no sense to have included her.
Question: What website did you use to create your tierlists?
You’d be the Final Movie Reviewer, I’m pretty sure. Screen Queen!
[Edit: Yay, Mary Elizabeth Winstead made the list. One of my favorites.]
She is a great final girl in many horror movies ( Final Destination 3, The Thing prequel, 10 Cloverfield Lane)
