I’m working in higher clientele kitchens now and the head chefs always look so polished and clean, even during our messiest shifts. Thank you for the tips on how to rise to the occasion!
Great apron. I wear Birkenstocks now and and they really help with posture and are really comfortable when broken in. The thing about the classic chef jacket that if any boiling hot liquid spills on your chest you can instantly pull your jacket off minimising burns.
I work in the hot summer outdoor catering and these items are game changers for me for the lower half of my body. Worth checking out! Kuhl Resistor pants Blundstone boots with FP insoles Separatec underwear
I strongly and highly highly recommend mozo brand boots. I have been thru two pairs in 4 years. They stand test of time. Easy to clean, they look good, they fit great, your feet can breath, posture is good. As a diabetic my feet are important, as a chef 10-12 hours of standing does its toll on you. Mozo brand is by far the best I've used
Thanks for the tips! For shoes, I recently bought a pair of Blundstones, as they were recommended by basically everyone in my kitchen, and I highly HIGHLY recommend them for not just comfort but also the look
+1 on Blundstones - had a bunch of co-workers wear them and I've tried them on and loved them. Wish they had a bit more breathability but that comes with how sturdy they are.
i personally wear the biker sfx chef jacket from Chaud Devant...its just a masterpiece.light, breathable, sharp, buttons for sleeves, recycled matterial and unique texture, but most of all looks badass..Highly recommend Chaud Devant if you wanna go for something less sharp try Clement...but they are more expenisve
You're a life saver dude! I'm sick of the chef jacket, don't usually have issues with pants but the baggy look is starting to make one feel self conscious, my Crocks are starting to break down, my back is hurting and I've had the smelliest feet for the past year. I guess I'm going shopping and your video just solved most of my problems. Hurry up and mass produce them aprons son! Lol Thanks Justin, stay frosty!
Hey Justin! Awesome stuff, I’m sure I’m not the first to ask but would you do a video on how you prepare yourself for each day? And how does that contrast what you’ve done in the past?
This is a great video with a lot of good points. I never really thought of professional kitchens being that dangerous relative to current day. I wear a summer weight tactical pant from Propper. Stain resistant, breathable, and lots of pockets. I enjoy the professional look off a modern white chef coat, however I‘ve brought one with me each time I staged, and never ended up wearing it there because the kitchens were so hot / it didn’t match the attire. I’m hoping it’ll come in handy if I pick up side gigs / my own work. I was wondering about the apron, Justin! I’ve seen similar proprietary design out there however many seemed overpriced. I’m in the process of making myself some out of cotton denim. On a side note, I’ll be starting a new job soon, where the kitchen has both a wood fired grill and pizza oven. :)
Love their pants - I still think, over time, denim has a bit more of a pull for me. Also, oil shows really poorly on Lulu stuff...but I definitely agree with you on the moisture management side of things
Have you thought about making a how to on the apron and then maybe selling the plans as a PDF or an ebook with a bunch of your self made stuff (apron, sharpening board etc)
In the recent past I was working at a country club, and the owners insisted that we wear chef coats. It took months, but I finally convinced them when I had to have one of the owners run Expo because we were so short, that we should be allowed to wear polo shirts. The next week they gave us nice golf polos out of the pro shop.
TheCulinarian golf shirts are great for sweating heavily, but they’re meant to be worn outdoors, where they can dry properly. Rayon in the kitchen, is a disaster, the sweat stays on your body, the material gets extremely smelly, and it’s just the opposite of good kitchen attire. I promise, 100% cotton chef coat, or snap shirt, will change your life!
Love your videos Justin. I wear Blundstones and merino socks and keep a couple of Kmart long sleeve shirts when I’m at work.. I swap between a chef coat and an apron throughout the week, freaking love yours!!! Want!!
Hey Justin- what are your thoughts on French Work Shirts? That’s what we wore in the open kitchen at my last job and they were insanely comfortable and looked super professional.
Try Geox shoes. I often work in the kitchen or on food trucks and have been wearing Geox shoes for years since my feet sweat quite a bit as well. Even on a food truck in the middle of summer in Texas, my feet stay dry as the shoes breath and let out moisture while allowing in air.
I agree, the traditional chef uniform, is outdated. I do like the traditional chef coat however, and if I could wear it all the time, out and about in public, I definitely would. I am most comfortable in 100% cotton, my chef coats are all from “chefwear” and they’re all 100% cotton. This shirt looks awesome, if it were cotton I’d try it out. The apron your wearing, is PERFECT, please make more, please make them available to the world.
Really enjoy your videos! I used to food truck work when the scene got really hip. I wore above the knee shorts that had crotch room. I would pair those up with knee high socks, the kind for blood circulation problems. Found them in some nifty patterns! Word got around, and everyone was on that boat! I'm a personal Chef now, and still rock that style.
Love repping other restaurants hats and shirts and or food shirts while working. looking for a good apron also my neck is killing me but the aprons I wear are about $6-$8bucks each. Shoes... Need a new pair I've been through Crocs as well(hated the look) berkinstocks are great(but my feet dont seem shaped for these rype of shoes, wierd) on my 2nd pair and want to try vans for the makers edition not as much as the berks but not expensive also. I hate traditional chef pants ... +1 on ExOFfficio undies. I rock the boxers rather than the boxer-briefs, but they are so good. They don't ride up, which makes them the best underwear anyway, and they keep me cool which is a plus.
birks conform to your feet over time. it takes time for them to form to the shape of your feet. they're like doc martens boots, those take time to break in so they shape to your feet.

Ha yeah I actually got a new pair coming in the mail - it's gonna require a new update to this video! Blundstones are super solid, tried a few on and have a bunch of peers who swear by them...but they're too hot for me.
I guess I'm old school. I insist on wearing a chef's coat at work despite others just going with an apron etc. I earned the damned thing and I'm gonna wear it. :/

The demographic of the average line cook has changed a lot in the last 2 decades. Which has led to a lot of cringed content of assholes who have an inflated idea of what their job is.
