What a great song for the holidays…. John (Düsseldorf) Denver is probably the greatest singer/songwriter in my opinion. My personal favorite is Calipso, the name of the boat owned by Jacque Cousteau, famous sea explorer, He really captures the essence of the sea. Happy holidays!
John Denver was a really big, massive star in the late 60s, 70s and 80s. He had a special or guest appearance on TV regularly, he hosted the Grammy Awards five times in the 1970s and 1980s, and guest-hosted The Tonight Show on multiple occasions. In 1975, he was awarded the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year award. His live concert special, An Evening with John Denver, won the 1974-1975 Emmy Award for Outstanding Special, Comedy-Variety or Music. He was a big deal back in the day by probably being the biggest and most popular singer songwriter and entertainer for two consecutive decades. John Denver had an impressive chart dominance, with a string of four No. 1 songs ("Sunshine on My Shoulders", "Annie's Song", "Thank God I'm a Country Boy", and "I'm Sorry") and three No. 1 albums (John Denver's Greatest Hits, Back Home Again, and Windsong). A hard act to follow, I loved John Denver, he was the best!
I saw John Denver in concert, during his "Evening With..." tour, at the Capital Centre, in Largo, Maryland. It was like being in church... Best concert EVER!!
Your comment really sums it up. When I was a kid John Denver was this young, goofy and cool singer, actor and the biggest entertainer who was able to cross genres and perform with all other mega celebrities of the time. His celebrity was 100% talent based and clean. In 1985 as his star was fading and he was going through personal struggles I was in the summer before senior year of high school. I went to a non denominational Christian camp in Canada with a youth group. There were rumors that John was in the area which was very remote and that the camp was reaching out to him to come sing for us. As the week came to a close nothing happened. As they were serving dessert after dinner on our last night they announced a special guest and proceeded to introduce John Denver. One of the camp leaders came out dressed like 1971 John Denver and began playing CountryRoads. I was so mad... We'd been had! Then one of the the councilors interrupted him and they got into an argument about him not being JD. After a back and forth about his cowboy hat fake John said he'd prove that John Denver wears a cowboy hat. He walked into the kitchen and a moment later the real John Denver walked out in a cowboy hat! There was probably less than 150 kids and adult chaperones in the room and he played a full solo concert as if he was on TV or at a sold out stadium. He told the background of each song and what he was thinking when he wrote them. He shared personal stories of his life and faith. He had just performed in the Soviet Union which was a big deal at the time so he talked about that and sang the last verse of Annie's Song in Russian. The Perseid Meteor Shower was going on and he explained "raining fire in the sky" and told us to stay up late and watch the shooting stars which we did. It was pretty incredible that he did that for us, during his vacation with family and friends but I think he really truly loved sharing his music with people.
@@SquawkCode Great story and experience! He probably enjoyed performing the small concert a lot more than the any large one or media special, going back to you roots it's called. That's where the love of performing takes place. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah this performance was slightly faster than the original studio recording I think… I grew up listening to him on the radio all the time. His voice is one of those timeless ones… I was sooooo sad the day we found out he died.. sure miss him.
Seriously, but I guess that's what happens. Maybe it got overplayed or something and just got "banned" if you know what I mean. But yeah, you'd think it would be playing as background music in stores etc.
John's greatness came from his ability to communicate such strong emotions with relatively simple melodies and lyrics. No matter what age you are, there is just something relatable to his music.
Wow!! Your first time hearing John Denver? Amazing!! Shocking!! This song is about how Denver moved to Colorado and what he found there changed his life forever. Probably one of the best and definitely most prolific Country Folk singers there ever was and ever will be. John Denver was the heart of American Country Music. He was also an amazing proponent for saving nature and wildlife. He came to work with Jacques Cousteau and hence the song Calypso, which is about the ship that they used in their sea explorations. John Denver's voice and his vibrato are very unique and the precision in which he sang his notes is incredible. You should also check out "Annie's Song"
Loved your reaction to John Denver. There are so so many of his songs that you really do need to check out. Such as, Take Me Home Country Roads, Searching for Space, Calypso, Anne's Song and many many more.
Glad to see everyone loving John's music to this day. John and I share first cousins and an aunt and uncle, in fact, he put her name in Grandma's Feather Bed... our Aunt Lou. She's in her 90s, now, and still rolls her eyes to this day that he put her name in one of his songs. He loved her, and she loved him. Long live the spirit of John Denver!
I knew John and still miss him to this day. I think you are just starting your journey with one of the greatest singers and song writers you will ever heaar. Enjoy the ride!
Awesome Schnell that you finally got to my all time favorite musical artist. Singer/Songwriter, Humanitarian, Man of Peace and one of the greatest artists of all time. RIP JD
I know I’m getting older when I remember seeing his TV concert on the National Mall, Memorial Day 1995. And also I vividly remember that tragic day in 1997 when my Dad told my uncle of John Denver’s death. I remember the sadness. He truly was the voice of a generation.
After seeing your reaction to this song you have to listen to his live version of Annie's song! He wrote the song for his wife Annie after they had separated and eventually got back together. He wrote the song in his head in 10 minutes while on a ski lift in Colorado..
I would highly recommend listening to the studio version. You will truley hear John in his prime. His voice was amazing. Treat yourself to the studio version of Annie's Song as well. He wrote it after an argument with his wife. He wrote it, in his head, in 10 minutes while skiing. He rushed back to sing it for his wife.
Hi just found your channel. John Denver is one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century, his life cut short in a plane crash. Thank you for bringing this incredible man back to life.
The reason you had goose bumps was his music is amazing because he truly believed in what he sang he truly looooooved nature animals!!!!! He was the genuine real deal!!!!
This classic song is actually full of high notes and super technical, it's just that John Denver is so talented and so gifted that he makes it sound so easy.
I saw John in concert many times. His audience was filled with fans of every age. His music was part of my home and my daughter, now in her 50’s, can’t recall life without his music being a part of it. She is as much a huge fan as I am! He wrote hundreds of songs, some huge hits. His lyrics range from heartfelt romantics to fun and playful. His mastery of the 12-string adds to his amazing vocals.
John Denver is one of a very exclusive group of musicians. Only two singer/songwriters have two songs as official state songs. John's songs are: "Rocky Mountain High" the official state song/anthem of Colorado, and "Take Me Home, Country Roads" the official state song/anthem of West Virginia.
OMG... Schnell I was waiting for you to go down this John Denver journey... ! I obviously haven't seen your reaction as 1.5 hrs away. I know your a Home Free FAN but to take away from your current reaction... ! But... PRETTY PLEASE (LOL) react to... John Denver - Take Me Home, Country Roads (Home Free Cover) (Official Music Video).. Love your reactions! PEACE
Thank you for a beautiful reaction. It's hard to describe just how big of a star John Denver became through his music during the same era that saw the greatest rock acts ever releasing what was to be the sound track to many of our lives. The most successful of the singer/songwriters of that era, he was just a worldwide phenomenon. You don't hear his music on 'classic rock' stations, but when many of those songs first came out they often had to jockey for position on America's Top Forty against some John Denver song. At least, that's how I remember it. Best of the Season and take care all.
What fascinates me is that his voice deepened a good bit over the years (this performance is later in his career) so he changed the musical key of his hit songs to suit his voice but it didn't affect the quality of the songs one bit....his voice and talents aged like fine wine and he left us way too soon....
Schnell, your son's first Christmas and I bet and hope you are with your family in Colorado. Have an awesome Christmas season. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas.
Ah man! he did such an amazing job on that song here! wow! God blessed him with immense talent and at the same time blessed us with the joy of hearing his music, thank you God, and thank you brother John, rest in peace.
I fortunately saw Denver in concert three times. I was always amazed by the pureness ... the clarity of his voice. No rasspyness, no breathyness ... just pure clear sound. And, as you mentioned, he was a fantastic guitarist especially when he played his 12-string. His death was the first death of an artist that truly saddened me.
When I was in medical technology school in 1992, I was assisting a doctor who was collecting a bone marrow sample. It’s a very painful procedure, and they always give versed because they don’t want the patient unable to communicate with the doctor, and versed basically makes you forget what was done to you. Anyway, the patient started moving and kicking their legs, so I held onto her legs to keep her still. The doctor started singing ‘Country Roads, Take Me Home’, and the patient visibly relaxed. When the procedure was done, I was thanked by the doctor and the MT who I was assisting. We were both shocked and surprised by the doctor. She was a great singer.
John Denver is my most favorite singer! I actually learned Rocky Mountain High on my guitar! But you can't go wrong with most of John's songs! He did write "Rocky Mountain High," he also co-wrote "Take Me Home, Country Roads," wrote "Sunshine on my Shoulders" (which will blow you away with his soft but strong voice! Another favorite is "This Old Guitar" and watch the one from one of his tv specials...just John and his guitar his grandmother had given him. Please react to more John Denver!
Awesome reaction to an American folk icon! Not only was he the 38th best- selling music artist of all, he was a leading advocate for environmental causes in the 70s and also portrayed that love of the wilderness and country through his music. He was a huge fan of flying, too. Which caused him an early demise in 1997, as he crashed in his small experimental plane. He was admired all around the world. His song 'The Wings that Fly Us Home' is my favorite, as it's very soulful, and in fact played at his funeral.
Can’t believe you never heard this song before. If you get back to Colorado there used to be a place, near Aspen I believe, where he lived that has all his songs written in stone. He was much loved by my generation and probably would still be today if he hadn’t tragically passed at such a young age. Please look up more of his music if not to react to then to just enjoy. Rocky Mountain suite, also called cold nights in Canada, is one of my favorites.
He wrote this and sang this when he was younger and was able to hit higher notes . You can hear his voice crack but he drove through like a champ. JOHN DENVERS MUSIC has a special place in the recesses of my memories during his height. He was AWESOME
My favorite song by him. Aside from being specifically about the Rocky Mountsins, the real story in the lyrics is about him being lucky enough to have found the place on this earth where he instantly knew he belonged, and at a young enough age to enjoy it. I envy him in this song because many of us never find that place. He was a gifted songwriter with a beautiful voice. If you haven't already - you must react to "Annie's Song". He wrote it in 10 minutes on a ski lift near his home in Aspen after an argument with his wife, Annie. Its truly one of the most beautiful songs ever written ❤
M favorite song by John Denver is Country Roads, although I like all of John Denver songs, Country Roads is my favorite-- RIP John Denver- your fans are missing you everyday like I do……
I remember when this was released, it was criticized for glamorizing “getting high” and he couldn’t sing it on some TV shows, but he always denied it was about anything other than appreciating his mountain environment. Twenty years later, they asked him about it in an interview and he said, “Oh, that was about getting really stoned and walking around in the mountains.” heh.
yeah john does it again another superb live performance, full of joy n wonder, v origina recording vers bckn vocals call n response that takes v song 2 v nxt level, n jhn goes into falsetto, he was bout 25 yrs younger ven im guesn. try for u 2 hear johns excelent vocal ability n annies song.
Oh. I must be old. I feel sad that you lived in Colorado for 10 years and are just now hearing him! I saw his concert in San Francisco just before he died. He was stunning at his peak. He sang for over 3 hours. People were leaving before the end because he just kept on singing song after song. One of my favorite experiences. Thanks for sharing.🥲
Such a wonderful pleasure to hear this song again. A great reaction from you too. I was fortunately able to catch one of John's concerts in Tokyo in the 1970s.

@@malcolmberke4862 it's Deutschendorf His father was a Lt. Col. in the military.
@@davidcochran6291 thank you. I stand corrected.
The studio version of this is so much better, IMO. You should really listen to that one.
He didn't just write it, he lived it! It's autobiographical.
Godspeed, John. You are greatly missed.
THIS SONG WAS USED IN THE HORROR FILM, 'FINAL DESTINATIONM'!!!

Okay, who's peeling onions around here? Love this live performance. Thanks Schnell.
How can it be possible to live in Denver for a decade and not hear this song a dozen times?
Seriously, but I guess that's what happens. Maybe it got overplayed or something and just got "banned" if you know what I mean. But yeah, you'd think it would be playing as background music in stores etc.

RIP John. He has soo many beautiful songs, my favorite is “Sunshine on my Shoulder”. You’ll love it also
I would highly recommend the studio version! It’s a little slower paced and sounds absolutely amazing!
Agree!!
I agree!
Yes yes yes. Better pacing and the opening guitar from Mike Taylor.
The guitars! It’s hard to realize it, but there’s no percussion, no anything but guitars.
Yes, why for heaven's sake react to a much lesser quality live version?

The first concert I ever attended. Saw him multiple times, still love his music
His songs made you want to harmonize with him. While visualizing being on the Mountains.
It is that feeling of escape, to be alone, and enjoy how beautiful the world is
Nice to see your smiling face. I lived in Denver area in the early 70's. ❤
As a child of the 70s, I grew up on this music. It was the best time.
loved it!

I was at mammoth lakes last summer and watched a bald eagle 🦅 fly back and forth across the lake. It was huge.
Folk music it's all about the story he John Is one of the Best
John Denver was such a great singer/songwriter. Annie's Song is a great song and I like his song The Eagle and The Hawk.
