I miss the old castle market so much going there with my mum the clothes shops, the sweet shops and the electronics and game stores. My mates and i would go and one would stop by the seafood stall and eat a ton of mussels with vinegar and I'd gip everytime. Castle market literally had something for everyone sheffield has never been the same without it.
Great vlog Tim, love going round the markets, good to see the wool lady still there, bought all my buttons etc. from her when I used to knit, good to see smith and Tissington still trading too, and Graces fabrics, she used to be in crystal peaks market many years ago lovely lady. 😊x
The coffee shop at the front is really good and the fish n chips place is very decent. I’ve also found the fresh meat and fish from the stalls are far better quality than you would get in the supermarkets.
Another interesting presentation. The last time I was in the Moor Market was 2015 for the Sheffield Blitz events, tho that didn't really show the market in it's best guise. Personally, maybe because I am old, I much preferred the Castle, Sheaf and Rag markets as they were much more vibrant and offered a greater range of products. However, I suppose any thing is better that the hideous Meadowhell.
I never tended to go in the castle market much, so I can't easily compare them, but the Moor market does always seem busy when I go in. In fact I'd say it looks busier than Doncaster market does nowadays. Doncaster market was thriving ten years ago.
Looks great Tim, empty and empty units. Interesting point, the very far back unit on its own Tim, they designed that for the cockle man that was in the middle of the castle market. He just semi retired and went to help sismons. As if one man with a small stall can take enough to pay those rents and service charges. Richard, one of the butchers took it on, but couldn't make it pay, not feasible.
@@timawells all the smaller one or two owner stalls didn't go in, no characters went in. Did you know they barred the market helper, David who always wore running gear all the time and ran errands for the stall holders? He went in the moor market and pulled his pants down in front of everyone, so they barred him. I'm tempted to do exactly the same Tim.
That was very quiet. Normally a lot busier. Food hall good. Increase is rent doesn't help. But other business has come in and they've been able to make a living. So no excuses.
I find that market to be very expensive. The fruit and veg is much dearer than the supermarkets. I want to support local stall holders but they charge far too much.
It is expensive, it's gone from a cheap essential market to a novel food hall, I find everything expensive in it, I watched Andrew bump his prices up at Wateralls years ago and my tea cakes went from £1 to £110 to £120 to £130 for 4, I don't know what they are now from the confectionery stall in the middle, used to go every Saturday, I remember when they ran out, I went to turners........get ready, I said HOW MUCH!!! I now go to Heron at castle gate. I used to do 90% of my shopping in the castle market, the carrier bags used to cut into my hands, it got so I was going in the moor market for a tiny rucksack full of stuff, waste of time, I don't go now.
@@richardburns1287 My mother used to take us into the Sheaf for a cake on the way home for teatime and we would then jump on the 206 to Anston. Simple things Richard.
@timawells used to get proper characters and buskers, normal people in normal clothes without daft haircuts that grow out in a week, no body staring into their phones indoctrinated by the state, free thinkers, Tim 👍
All the big players went in, Andrew, Stewart, Turners etc. All the small mother and daughter stalls had to pack up, all the one man bands couldn't come in here. Priced out. That's your labour council folks, for big businesses, sod everyone else 👍
@timawells whether it's rent or service charges Tim, whatever they choose to call it, it's a huge cost for having a stall in there. When you are selling apples and bread cakes you need turnover and to compete with your German super markets you need to be selling stuff cheap with a massive advertising campaign and you need to paying low rent for what's essentially a market stall. The council got this wrong on so many levels and should have restored the castle market 👍

@timawells they were hoping to attract a better clientele, as if the Ecclesall set are going to suddenly ditch MnS and start shopping on the moor. The wealthy suburbs all have it delivered and nip into MnS for small items. This is what happens when you get technocrats running a council Tim. Shame you didnt visit the toilets as it would have been interesting to see a comparison to crystal peaks customer toilts which are old and decrepit. Disgustingly dirty and unhygienic. As for high rents, thats not true, the rents are reasonably low. Its the service charges that are crippling , and if you have 2 units, thats 2 times the charges but you dont get double the service. Infact sheffield city council are having the pants down of crystal peaks market traders.. they are failing them on every level!!
I remember the toilets being clean in the market. If you have to pay a high service charge, its part of the rent conditions. I am not into splitting hairs.

I agree on the coffee shop. I've started going there in preference to Greggs now :).
@@thetony5474 it ought to be, at those prices!
I’m a big fan of the Moor Market. Scufflers from the bakery stall, cans and bottles from Beer Central and fish & chips, of course!

Yes the old markets had more character.
I remember being dragged around castle market as a kid with the promise of a chip butty at the elevated cafe in the middle.
I remember being scared to death coming down those steps on the Top rank building on the way there.

@ We tend to go to Barnsley Market but if in Sheffield will give it a look. Looks clean and airy and quite a few stalls but not as big as I expected.
@@Richard-gk3kq The modern market is a fraction of the original foot print Richard.

I knew a young woman who had a gift shop in here but she left because of the high rent and went back to watford.
The market is a bit too small and the walk ways not wide enough so it gets packed easily
Its a fraction of the size of the Castle market. then we also had the Sheaf. Rents increased so fewer vendors and lower profits.
As with small local shops and small businesses, use them or lose them. No point moaning after they've gone.
I agree ordinarily, but they doubled the rents on the market so the prices went up. I have found smaller businesses to be way over priced.
