Don't be intimidated, it's a deceptively easy instrument to learn. Basically a simplified version of tabla, with simpler fingerings and less high-speed solo shenanigans. There's plenty of instructional material out there, so it's pretty safe to just buy one and get started learning the strokes.

I have started to learn from RUclips and it is quite easy. As time goes by, the movements become fluid and then you can build over it.
