  • Our own Bud Rector demonstrates the use of a Trow and Holden pneumatic carving tool in removing old mortar prior to repointing. You can learn more about these tools, especially for use on historic restoration projects, at trowandholden.c....

      Thanks for raising your concerns about pneumatic tool use. Working with any power tool requires good safety practices. We have a number of rubber mounted accessories that will help isolate tool vibrations from the user (see our Chisel Whizard, Chisel Tiller, Air Tool Pistol Grip & Chisel Retainer videos) as well as anti-vibration work gloves. But perhaps the most important thing to remember when using any power tool is to TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS. Use the time to regrind & sharpen your chisels -- your hands will thank you and you'll get back to work with better performing tools! - Norm / Trow and Holden

      @@stiltonwilton1313 that can happen with any vibratory tool. But the idea would be to try to find tools that do not vibrate your hands, or vibrate them as little as possible or use them for a very short duration. Using vibratory tools for long durations is how you get those problems

    You don't even have a locking chuck on the chisel/Chisel body? Seems like that would be a good idea. All Impact tools have this small feature. Correct me if I'm wrong but without that rubber strap doesn't the Chisel just fall out of the tool?

    "The chisel shall have a round shank and be hand held in
    place in the carving tool with no retainer. A round
    shank permits the chisel blade to be oriented
    independent of the tool, an essential feature that is
    impossible with square-shank tools. The absence of a
    retainer, or any mechanical connection, enables the user
    to defeat power of the tool immediately by pulling the
    chisel away from the piston, without any other action.
    Precision and control is affected by the tool design
    enabling one hand to operate the tool, while the other
    manipulates the chisel. Importantly, this tool was
    developed as a finishing instrument to sculpt stone for
    hours at a time. " {From *The Use of Pneumatic Tools in Repointing Historic Masonry* APT Communiqué, Vol XV (1), Technical Note 8, 1985 - Philip C. Marshall / Author}
