+Oldfogey Oldfogey I got you. If you visit www.bmw-motorrad.com/r1250gs and scroll down a bit there is a button where you can hear the motor only (no drumming :) There is also a good set of tech info. Have a wonderful day! - Elizabeth, BMW Motorrad Team
Manufacturers have, undoubtedly, one of the most important research tools at their disposal, for free. It’s called RUclips, and the comment section is as important. With that being said, there is undeniable proof that they prefer paying research firms consisting of either non-riders, riders by name only, or professional riders huge amounts to basically tell them what they want to know instead of the truth. It this wasn’t the case, Royal Enfield would use loctite on their screws, KTM adventure motorbikes would have steering dampeners and a small fan extracting heat from the rear header away from the rider, Yamaha would have had a year of Tenere 700 sales before Kawasaki blindsided them with their KLR650 replacement, the G310 would have been a G400 or 450 with a cheaper 21” tubed spoke front wheel and progressive front springs, Ducati wouldn’t lie about the Multi-Strada’s power output and ensure they put fresh batteries in their keyless ride keys from the factory, Honda’s nc750x motor would be doing service in a replacement Transalp, the BMW 850gs and 1250gs would come with a dct transmission option, the Honda Africa twin adventure sports would have speed control as standard and the front end would feel less like riding on a corrugated dirt road when if fact its a smooth tar road while still being good on a bad dirt road, the BMW 1000xr would come with a clutch not requiring a vice grip to operate and led headlights, more low-down torque, better fuel economy or a larger fuel tank and gearing that makes touring on it pleasurable. I can go on, but this list proves my point. Manufacturers aim to please marketing and research agencies, or test riders paid by them to not insult their bosses, and thus lose their awesome jobs and pay checks instead of aiming to give their customers what they’re begging to pay for. And when they realize their mistakes they try to bullshit the facts or plaster them over with rubber mounts, bar end weights or a clever marketing campaign after entertaining a bunch of drunk journalists in an exotic location to read or publish their own marketing handout. I ride the bike that comes closest to what I’m looking for after thoroughly testing the options myself, with my own money and time. Right now, both the best and second best bike for my needs are R1200gs adventures, but that does not mean it can’t be improved further, as it should. I’m not loyal to any brand, only to the best bike in the world. I have space for a third light weight mid-size adventure/dual-sports hybrid, something light, cheap and about 45kw and a 350+ kms range. Everyone is looking for this, it does not exist, yet, but the race is on. Who will be taking our money, and for my other bikes, will they stay BMWs? I sure hope so, but I want one of them to be DCT and make lane splitting during my daily commute easier while also making touring comfortable and riding a dirt road through the Karoo pleasurable for my kidneys.
Just a bit of a louder sewing machine noise. I had an air cooled one once, and so wanted it to sound like a motorcycle to impress the girls, it just draws the attention of fat old men ( like me really ). Another thing. BMW are always banging on about you dont need loads of HP when compared to the market, then jack the power up 10HP!
Personally, I prefer a traditional deep roar from my exhaust, not the tinny 2-stroke din I had in my moped days. Modern bikes sounds like washing machines to me...all getting rather too gentrified for my liking. Can't help thinking the new BMW 1250 engines is more of a marketing ploy than anything else. Against the other 1200cc manufacturers, now they can say: We have 50cc more than you, nur-nur, nur-nur.......excuse the sound effects! By the way, you didn't use to play for Man City? If you did, you were a great player, so say through gritted teeth as I'm a red!
Old fogey, You fail to notice this one has 4 valves per cylinder from the factory. Not only that, but its a different engine in many other ways too. BMW really is ahead of its class. Its not just about more cc's, but more than meets the naked eye. BMW wants to stand out, and their engineering department has always been a step ahead of the other brands. Its one of the reasons they are somewhat high end in price and maintenance and repair. Im an old fogey myself, but even back when I first started riding, back in 1966, BMW was known as the Rolls Royce of the motorcycle industry. They Still hold that position today.
Why so pessimistic? BMW knows how to build motorcycles! Adding 50ccs just makes it more gutsy. It takes a real man to know how to handle that much added torque and power. They aren't known for being gooses. They are known to be good at what theyre designed to do!
BMW company, all managers and marketing department! Please make automatic transmission on GS and GTL motorcycles, like Honda's DCT. Every Honda lover will change his Honda to Bmw . Now i have Africa Twin DCT, but when you'll make DCT on your bikes, I'll buy BMW R1250 GS ADVENTURE CARBON EDITION DCT OR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. THANKS YOU IN ADVANCE.

Too much drumming....please can we hear the engine instead!
Yeah, not one single straight engine sound. I want to hear a fly-by.
BMWs are normally pretty quiet. You would want the music provided.
