I drink wine though I might not live to get drunk. Does that deter me? No! I reject the future. I drink now and I get drunk as circumstances dictate. That's the most comically complex way to say you like drinking, I love it.
Jack Vance's final novel, Lurulu, ends with a similarly poetic toast to the glory of beer. It's a moving moment as the 90-year old author ends his career with this affirmation of the joy of life.

I second, third, and fourth this recommendation; Cugel is the greatest anti-hero ever conceived. While we’re at it bring back all the awesome Vance works that’ve been taken offline. Besides Cugels Saga, there’s Dying Earth, Rhialto the Marvelous, the Blue World, etc…
@@donnahdunthorn5207 Well he's a bit of a wanker that's for sure . That's what is so special about Cugel compared with 99 % of fantasy heroes in general. No nobel youth but a selfish brute
That sounds like something Cugel would say… he is after all the one true good person in a world full of rogues and blaggards - as he puts it 🤣 Seriously though, time stamp those occasions as I think this is really the one time for a truly good deed
2:50:15 “As for Derwee Corrine, no doubt she would soon come to terms with her new life.” -Cugel, hilariously justifies abandoning the girl after he gets bamboozled.
The stories in the dying earth are mostly interchangeable with the exception of Cugels Saga. If you liked cugels story you would also like Rhialto the Marvelous

I'll drink to that

One of the greatest books. Jack Vance is amazing.
Morey is an outstanding narratior.
I agree for the most part but his take on Cugel always made him sound like an old fat blowhard rather than the young fox faced vagabond he is
Yeah, he's good.
Especially does a great job keeping all the odd language and invented names extremely legible.
Cugel is such a bastard 😂
No, he is wise. Even when getting scammed and ridiculed.
The two are not mutually exclusive although I don’t think Cugel could be considered wise - rogue and blaggard better describe him
@@canalsincontenido He makes a lot of mistakes
Not read tge Cugel books since the 80s. Thanks so much for this audio!
I've taken to saying "just so" now. It may sound pretentious, but I don't care.
“By no means!” as an interjection meaning ‘hell no’ is great too.
*In all candor* I have taken to it myself.
I love how Vance takes a literary tradition from the 17th century and makes it modern and vital.
Hi there William, which tradition are you referring to?
@@m.4983 Picaresque maybe?
What tradition im curious
Please, please, PLEASE reupload Cugels Saga.

I fifth sixth and seventh this… also why does it keep getting pulled down in the first place?
YES
Jack Vance is awesome
Brilliant book, how do we get younger generations to read it?
The fantasy novel were everyone is obnoxious ,including the 'hero' 😅
I thought the shell creatures were sweet...
@@DrWhom Yes, I forgot about those beings . But even they weren't that nice either. More like harmless little pricks pulling pranks .
@@spiritualanarchist8162 My husband hated Cugel after the shell creature incident.

Antihero in the tradition of Peer Gynt. Truly a goon lol
This is such a great book! Hilarious
I love him
Thank you,any chance of uploading 'The Moreau Factor'?
Thanks for the reading.
@ 6:38:05 - perhaps the one instance of Cugel being altruistic 🤣
I seem to remember several other occasions; Cugel does tend to repay a kindness, it is just that such rarely occurs in his world.

I always imagined Derwe Coreme to be pentasyllabic, with e as in air and o as in bone.
