max with the "if my mum, had balls, she'd be my dad" response to the safety car luck broke me. lando got lucky, and capitalised. that's how races are won. he won fair and square, and all the drivers' reaction show it.

@@daveruda I would agree with that if they hadn't bunched the field back up behind the safety car and eliminated the massive gap between him and max that existed for that SC lap or two. However, that advantage disappeared with a good chunk of the race still to go, and with tires barely newer than max's, Lando was able to not only hold off Max but ended up pulling a similar gap to what we've seen red bull do countless times. This not only showed his skill but also the strength of Mclaren's upgrades. Also, like he said in the video, capitalizing on a lucky situation is also a big part of the sport. I know from experience in many competitions (whether they be video games, other sports, even something like pool or bowling), that just because you're handed a lucky break doesn't mean you won't choke and completely blow it.
and before anyone calls me a Mclaren/Lando shill, I just enjoy seeing competition in the field. if it was any other driver we're not used to seeing win every week do the exact same thing, I would have the same reaction. The closer the teams are, the better the competition, and the more I enjoy F1.
Unless if was Fernando. you can absolutely accuse me of being a Fernando shill because I am, and I am not sorry

I'm a Lando fan and yes he had luck on his side with the SC.
But when you look at the finer details, he managed his medium tyres in the first stint beautifully which is why he was able to make up so much time after Perez pitted and stay out on them for longer. The SC came at the right time and he was able to keep calm under pressure at the SC restart when Max could've easily have overtaken him in T1.
He managed the rest of the race beautifully and that is the main reason why he won. He and McLaren got it right on the day and when it counted by being in the position to take advantage of any luck that came his way, and sometimes that's all it comes down to unless you're in a rocket-ship like Verstappen is 99% of the time.
Lando deserved the win and it's about time he got the win as well, and no one can take this win away from him.

I agree. To those people who think this was luck alone, I must remind everyone of the old saying "Luck is simply preparation meeting opportunity".

There is not a single GP-win Lando has missed apart from Sochi, which again wasn't really mainly his fault. People have been critisising him for being better than the car honestly.
To seize the opportunity on merit as the only driver to really actually beat Max or RB like this since 2022. And honestly since Lewis to do so in such a dominant way. I believe he will be the first WDC after Max. Absolutely no doubt

I think people forget Lando is 24 Years Old.
Two years younger than Leclerc, Russell, and Verstappen.
Like he was (until Bearman stepped in at Jeddah) the youngest British debutant in Formula 1. And to this day is still the youngest contracted British debutant in Formula 1.
Lando's so often up there with Charles, Max and George that I think people forget that unlike them, he's not on the brink of his prime. He's still got 2 years of development until he gets to the same stage as they are, and already he's matching/beating them consistently.
I genuinely think Lando could be one of the more underrated stars of the future. He's got two more years in the tank than Charles, Max and George yet is still fighting with them right now. If Lando continues his trend of making MASSIVE steps over the winter in terms of his driver development, then I'am of full belief he can fight for a world title, and quite possibly multiple! Stella really is raising one hell of a team over at McLaren, and Lando is on course to be at the helm of it, if he can continue to keep Oscar at bay as well as he has been doing this year. The gap between them has been slightly worrying for Oscar.

  • @Montrana

Even if he was lucky, he still put himself in the place to be lucky in the first place. He seemed to be managing the tires better than anyone else at the top, and was still setting fastest laps on fairly old mediums. If the safety car didn't come out, he seemed like he was almost prepared to go even longer and put on some softs. I doubt that things would've transpired that way, but still.

The luck argument doesn’t land because even if you’re in P2 or P3 and the leaders run into misfortune and you inherit the lead, you still had to be in the position to inherit the lead and you still have to be capable of securing the win.
Luck is a part of racing, but it’s not a big part and it’s definitely not the defining part.

The safetycar might have given him the little “luck” he needed. But who cares, he was faster anyway and therefor he deserved that win, period. Also look at yesterday’s reactions….everybody was and still is happy that he won. Also I believe we will see more of him now that “weight” is of his shoulders. I am a fan of Max, so I have my preferences to who should be the champion. But I would like to see more different winners than in 2022 and 2023. Therefor I was happy to see Lando get his first win this sunday, and I believe it will not be the last one of this season. And lets be honest…..who doesn’t want to see a likable person as Lando succeed too.

Safety car anticipation is part of F1 strategy. Imola 2020 Bottas was in front of HAM while some had still hope for a title fight. BOT pitted, Lewis extended his stint, bam! If you listen to his interviews since winning he never had doubt about his ability to win races. He said he has made mistakes but never when he was in a position to win a race. We dont talk about Charles choking when he has been leading a race and lost control. Its happened a few times. Or George crashing in podium positions. How many times has Lando walked back to the pits because he made an error in five years. This was the first time he genuinely had a competiitve car and he delivered. People who say he should fight Max in an uncompetiitve car to please the crowd and ruin his potential to podium dont realise that Lando is inteligent.

Hurray Lando. 🧡 But I hope this isn’t a sign of a long-term curse on his teammate, because Oscar didn’t put a wheel wrong, and he was the one who got the rocket start, as is often the case, he absolutely slapped Charles Leclerc and he was never very far off Verstappen’s pace. Absolutely the best placed man to profit from Max’s problems. At least we aren’t talking about how hopeless Oscar is… I bet Lando would quite undeservedly be getting a shit storm now if the tables were turned between the Papaya boys. As an Oscar fan first and foremost, the only person I’m actually upset with (apart from Kevin for not taking Logan off a couple of laps earlier 😂) is mí hermano y el tuyo, Carlos Sainz V. d. C. He kinda lost his cool after Checo jumped the start and almost caused a horrendous accident, can’t blame him for that, but all his rage got aimed at Oscar instead. But yeah, to quote Max Verstappen, “if my mum had balls she’d be my dad”. 🤣 The point is Piastri showed us he means business, being right on Lando’s pace with fewer upgrades, and capitalising on that pace right off the line - and you wouldn’t have known this was a lad who has had issues managing his tyres. He barely put a wheel wrong with this car that seems to be a lot less reliant on being on the knife-edge. McLaren weren’t kidding, they’ve definitely entered the chat in a big way. No shade on Lando in any way, he was magnificent and who can’t be happy for that cheeky little prick 😂 - but people saying Lando is going to cruise into the distance now that he’s finally broken his duck or claiming the theories that Oscar might have a higher talent “ceiling “ have been disproved by this very popular result might be in for a bit of a rude awakening. If this is a sign of things to come and McLaren are truly gaining on Max, I reckon our first Advance Australia Fair is coming very soon - vastly superior national anthem! (and this is as a Brit who doesn’t care about cricket, rugby or the royal family 😂)
