  • Not much movie action here I'm afraid, but a worthwhile snapshot, I hope, into the activities of a South African Industrial Railway legend. Dunn's locomotive works based in the industial heartland of the East Rand at Witbank were amongst the worlds last great steam locomotive overhauling plants... excluding China. The majority of their locomotive output centered around refurbishment of locos for industrial concerns such as coal and gold mines. In the video we see yard pilot, Hudswell Clarke built 0-6-2T 'Komati' going about it's business propelling frames off an NBL tank and a boiler from what I presume to be a Garratt. Much of the video shows scenes from their steam graveyard with some amazing gems. Sadly, I've no idea what became of Dunns, as this was my first and last visit in 1990.

Thank you Renownvidz for another great video and stroll down memory lane. The 'yard-goat', is a great looking engine. Dubs built some pretty powerful locomotives in their day, and Dunn's has 'saved' many locomotives from the scrap heap. Many of the improvements they made during the refurbishing process, not only enhanced appearances, but also performance! Thank you for shooting the footage you did. (I had relatives in Witbank, but Dunn's locomotive works evolved after my departure from South Africa). You unwittingly made a pretty important piece of locomotive history, by capturing the footage you did of Dunn's! Great job and Thank You!

Hi. Just found this video. Dunns was closed down mid 90's. My father was the draftsman at Dunns and most refurbished locos was drawn up by him for correct scale for rebuilds.
Not only was it locos from SA but Angola, Mozambique and other countries around SA.
