Great introduction to Electoverse. I signed up only last week in advance of picking my new EV this week! There’s definately more functionality in there than I anticipated, very much looking forward to putting through its paces.
The one thing I don’t like about the Electroverse app is that the route planning doesn’t show all the available chargers along the route. It only shows the one it thinks I’ll need based on range. Zapmap does show all chargers on the route which means I can plan stops much better.
Did you see the What Car EV vs Petrol test to La Rochelle and back yesterday, very interesting regarding range and route planning. It also highlighted how the UK Charging costs are considerably more that in France as an average. Unless the Government introduce a price cap for on the go charging it's a real problem, what happens if companies just decide to up the price to £1 per kw/k or more. The UK is plagued by companies price gouging rather than any sense of collective good for the country and hence EV adoption targets are pie in the sky whilst the consumer is held to ransom once dependent on electric.
I'll have to look that up. The public charging pricing does seem excessive and also inconsistent. I appreciate the infrastructure costs associated with DC rapid charging but if Tesla can consistently be half the price of the competition, what is going wrong? I agree that there is a lot of opportunism going on. Either a market correction happens once the supply outweighs the demand or the government intervenes with a price cap model in the same way we have for domestic energy costs.
According to my experience, the jury is still out. One thing I totally agree with is that Zap-Map has lost it's market leading position, and I certainly don't use it for any purpose other than doodling around maps looking for chargers in remote areas. Even then I don't trust it to be accurate anymore, both Electroverse and ABRP are more up to date in terms of chargers, their availability and pricing. I haven't used Electroverse for navigation yet, will try it out next trip up the M40 or M1.
Did a trip to Cornwall and back to Fife in the summer. I found that the electroverse app was optimistic about how long you would be charging. I expect every car has a different charge curve and also there can be some faffing getting charging going and in some cases finishing. Also a tendency to take you away from the motorway, which adds to the travel time.
Thanks for another informative video. I’ve been using Electroverse for about a year now and it’s really great, especially as allows me to charge using my Octopus credits. I learnt a trick to finish charging my EV sooner in case the charger refuses to release the cable - reducing the maximum charge level from inside the car. I’ve used it a couple of times, when the charge misbehaves.
Very good timing with this video. My Electroverse card was delivered this morning. Like you I am not enthusiastic about ABRP or Zapmap so for my next trip will trial the Electroverse app.
Very useful to know , I'm a long term EV driver (2017) had the Electroverse app for a while didnt know it could do routing. I had it for finding chargers and the small discount. Im going to follow your lead and remove ZapMap and ABRP as you said at the start these apps are becoming somewhat redundant now, certainly compared to when i started and as I've just switched to a Tesla even less needed. Not getting rid of Waze though i think thats by far the best app for directions and keeping up with whats enroute like jams, roadworks obstructions etc. it will beat the Tesla app for that.
ZapMap was always my 'go to' charging app. But I too am impressed by Electroverse and find I am using it more and more. Re stuck charging cables - On Renault Zoe there is an emergency cable release lever behind the charge plug that you access by opening the bonnet. I don't know whether there is a similar solution for other EV's that have the charge plug on the rear wing?
Thanks for the video, I'll definitely try Electroverse. I bought a Tesla for two main reasons, Autopilot, which makes driving so much easier, and the Tesla Supercharger's as the car navigates itself, they're really quick and pretty much the cheapest out there. I mostly charge at home with Octopus Intelligent Go
I’ve just installed electroverse. It looks good but the routing is just not working at the moment - It sits there doing nothing until it times out. I’ll try again in a few hours. Apart from that it looks very smooth.
I like electroverse a lot but I have issues with it. It massively underestimates efficiency, plus I often find the info is slightly wrong (precicse location, costs, number of chargers, kW available etc) so I tend to use this, then double check the suggested chargers on their individual websites / apps. This method has really made traversing the whole country (even the Scottish Highlands) a breeze.
ABRP has been a good crutch for a newbie EV driver. An OBDII scanner linked to the app helps also as it reads the real-time SOC of the battery, with the subscription (optional).
I like the Electroverse app, but I can’t navigate using it with Car Play. You have to send the route to Google Maps. I wish it was all baked into the same product.
Another great informative video,we have an electroverse card and have for a while but not had to use it but thank you for giving us an idea of how it works and like you we link it to the octopus electricity tariff so it’s aio place. Not enough waffle today though 😂
All the actual route planners i find overly cautious like you say. Often there's 2 or 3 charge stops of short charging rather than a singular big lunch with a longer one. It often defaults on octopus for thr starting state of charge to be less than 100%. Maybe fair enough but if im doing a long journey , i am going to have fully charged for price and convenience.
As you likely remember I still have my diesel VW, with no plans to change yet (I've owned it for 12 years) , let's get the heat pump done first. At a push I have a 450 mile range, even when the children were young we'd often do long journeys non stop, obviously if I got tired we'd stop and swap drivers, but usually I'm fine. So range anxiety and length of charge time is my major concern, so I found this video very interesting, and it's seems that problem is really not there, and the app looks great. Not sure how well my wife would cope though. Those prices were insane though, but I guess installation and equipment costs are high, but still wonder if there is some profiteering going on. But we only do long trips probably half a dozen times a year.
Yes, I do find the cost of public charging rather painful, but if you can charge at home 99% of the time then on average you'll save a fortune compared to diesel. This app just really gives us peace of mind and resolves any range anxiety we have as newbies. We just had to use it again last night and it was really simple and convenient where we charged for 10 mins just to give a little extra top up, whilst we had a convenience break anyway.
I keep an Electroverse card in both my EVs and one of them is a Tesla but I don't use the app for planning as if you go long distance and want to keep the price down I use the Tesla open to all or even better just go in the Tesla don't need to plan at all 😊. The only other app I use is pod point for Aldi/Morrisons and Lida but these are now being rebranded as the stores own charger that you need their app for but I find these handy for trips to friends and family that have chargers around the corner
I know its a bit of a promo BUT I have found (in my limited public charging experience - always charge at home - only had to public charge on a holiday to Cornwall from Derbyshire) that using Tesla open to none Tesla's is the cheapest and fastest. The electroverse app wont route plan on that filter (which is understandable). But worth noting.
Good point. My car unfortunately isn't compatible with any Tesla chargers! But like you, 99% of our charging is at home. Just having the app gives us peace of mind.
Electroverse is ok, better than zap map but ABRP is better for route planning. If I am on a long journey I get a month of ionity and filter on ionity on ABRP. 1 trip to a place 300 miles away and back saves 3x the cost of one month of ionity. Electroverse doesn’t come near that. Also planning a trip in the us next year and ABRP works there as well.

@Sean_S1000 nope, only a select number of them. All the brand new ones do, but they still need a software update to work with Tesla chargers. 2,3,4 years old and we're out of luck. Wrong hardware.
@@UpsideDownFork ill stop telling people who have different cars CCS in office to use them like I do with my Mini. I had assumed all CCS cars worked with them.

It hurt a bit, but it was a CCS rapid at a convenient place where the kids could play and stretch their legs. Often we pay the price for convenience. The only other charger close to that was a Lidl one at a better rate but it was occupied at the time.
Yes there are expensive chargers outside your front door but the choice is there to which one you use and more to the point if you don’t normally use a expensive charge point ever day and charge on a home cheap tariff or even a Solar / Battery. And those people to whom a Driveway is not available or a dedicated parking space out side there residence will find a different option that works for them. Using a 83pence or above once in a while as a splash and dash is like using a Motorway services for petrol or Diesel you loathe paying it but sometimes needs must even if you only put a Tenner in ( or less ).
