- Dark mode is popular, but can have a negative impact on your productivity. When using dark mode, you'll read slower and spot fewer errors.

I worked for Air Traffic Control. About 10 years ago they redesigned the Controller Work Positions. A survey showed that dark targets on a light background are best suited for this kind of work. I am glad to have this video now which supports the motion of the redesign.
Im still gonna use dark mode..
I always prefer dark mode, but now I'm willing to vary between dark and light depending on ambient light. Now that a I have watched this video, I realized that my eyes do get irritated when using dark mode in a light environment.
Light mode hurt my eyes
@@kamui4708 then just reduce the brightness
I'd rather to have a slight worse performance than to have even less by looking a white screen and getting a headache in 15 minutes...
I use dark mode everywhere because white screen hurts my eyes. But I mostly switched to light mode whenever I was reading something on the screen because I always found it harder to concentrate. I guess now I know that it isn't my problem but instead a dark mode problem. Thanks for articulating.
All I know is , white backgrounds on a computer screen hurts my eyes. So I apply the darkest mode possibly
Yeap, no use to basically look into a led light. The light background of the room is not a light source of itself.
As you get older, you will understand the impact of age related macular degeneration. Over time, the eye lens suffers glycation, which can be minimized by avoiding seed oils, refined carbohydrates and all sugars, including milk. Glycation causes non-transparency of the lens. It starts with microscopic dark spots and slowly grows over time. The non-transparent spots both scatter and / or absorb incoming light. Over time, dark mode becomes less stressful than light mode.
Black is better at night. I'm a driver less pressure on the eyes.
Plus I feel things stand out with dark mode.
Just my opinion
Err, please stop using your phone while driving?
@stevesteiner7220 all driver use their phones while driving.
I don't think you got when I said I was a driver.
People like you should definitely not use the phone while driving.
Especially holding it.
I'm glad we got this out of the way.
Confusion can be complicated.
@@mrboagslmfao
@@stevesteiner7220 drivers use their phones all the time, for maps and the like, not all phone use behind the wheel is malicious or dangerous
this is true if the phone brightness is too bright. Thats why I like light mode as it requires less brightness to be able to read properly.
One thing that convinced me to use light mode more is some research - mentioned by Andrew Huberman - related to being more productive and alert when exposed to light in the morning. I'm already unfocused enough, so anything helps here.
I too use light mode during the day and dark mode during the night, with occasional light yellow or gray background as some apps allow. I find light yellow background most effective for when I need to compose extra long documents, or for reading stories.
Rather be unproductive than blind. Then I will be blind AND less productive
Regarding power consumption in oled displays; shade of gray pixels consume less power than white pixels.
Source? Otherwise it's just worthless opinion. Vid quotes sources, learn from it.
@@flybeep1661 Common sense? A darker pixel is less bright and that means the leds light up less.
Less light = less power consumption.
@@flybeep1661 Wrong. It's a fact. Not only is it common sense, but my source is that I'm an Electronics Engineer. OLED displays are just an array of LEDs, less brightness equals less current.
@@flybeep1661you don't need a source on everything, can you provide a source on why something is automatically worthless without a source?
if I claim that humans need oxygen to survive, asking for a source in that scenario might not be very helpful to all parties involved(allthough there is of course always a slim chance of something being reasonable but not correct)
in this case though you could just think in terms of energy/heat
when oleds works by giving out light rather than blocking it like an lcd
and we assume that the consumption doesn't reduce with Pixel brightness, we now have extra energy on our hands that is not going into 'making' light so you would expect the screen to heat up, that would mean that oled screens heat up more the darker they get, this already conflicts with what most people should know
in reality we just have individual leds that behave very similar if not identical to other leds which not only consume less due to the lower brightness, but also get more efficient with lower output powers
@@flybeep1661 haha, so sad, when common sense is so wrecked that you need an internet source for everything in your life. Like: Too much sun/radiation is bad for you skin and the sunburns I get may be a hint?! Gimme a source for dat, before I believe it! 😆
It's simple: Use light mode in well-lit rooms, and dark mode in dark rooms. Adjust the brightness if your eyes hurt, reading black letters on a white sheet of paper does not hurt your eyes either.
The best most productive progmmers use light mode.
But what about flickering fatigue caused by PWM, how does that get affected by dark mode? OLEDs can only be on or off, so wouldn’t dark mode lead to less flickering? As the black pixels stay off.
Your eyes can only handle so much brightness. Unless you like migraines and red eyes of course.
I would be nice if there was a feature for customising the window backgrounds to your liking. If you could choose the colour and the value and have different settings for times of day etc.
*And then I took that personally*
i tend do go in favour of lightmode with really low brightness recently. i just get tired from looking at black all day and it also makes me feel depressed. ontop i dont like the high contrast and colors and icons in darkmode all look bad too. i also find its unexplainably awkward to read text in darkmode. it feels so weird to have white text on black
i wish there was a middle ground.
if you work in photography for example photoshop also has a ''dark mode'' but it actually isnt ''dark black'' but using a 127:127:127 neutral gray. it doesnt burn your eyes like lightmode can do sometimes but everything you do from text to colors has a really accurate representation without any harsh contrasts because the background and theme is simply neutral.
thats what i really want. a neutral gray mode.
discord has a theme quite similar to this and it looks endlessly better to look at and read than pure dark mode
First downside is compensated for by adjusting the fonts to be thicker.
Wow, the comments in this comment section are retarded even by RUclips standards.
What is so surprising about there being "things which feel good, yet are bad for productivity/unhealthy/bad in some other way"? I will also probably continue to use dark mode, because I find it more pleasant, but I don't see the point in deluding myself that it makes me "more productive".
Could you explain further why dark mode may worsen eye strain for some users despite its initial benefits, and would you consider making a video exploring how different display settings affect eye health in more detail? Different question: What are the advantages of using dark mode for coding, and could you discuss the impact of display settings on productivity?Could you do more videos on RWA altcoins? Do you know any that have not launched yet
I can't write code in light mode. I just can't. I've tried. It doesn't click with my brain for some reason.
I must admit that I took me a while to adapt as well. Now I really like it during the day.
Light mode hurt my eyes
I love dark mode 24/7
I just came from the SUPERB video you made to clearly explain Symmetric vs. Asymmetric encryption. You deserve a gold medal for that one.
And then....I came to this video. You deserve a VERY BIG facepalm for this highly subjective topic.
🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂
I love your videos, simple yet explain the topic very well. May I know the application you're using to create the animated illustration? I want to create a similar knowledge sharing style for my job. Thanks
Keynote. You're welcome.
But how does it make me stupid like you claim in your clickbait?
Changed the title. Thanks for the feedback.
Oh my god, he is alive, my brother is alive 🔥🚀
Welcome back, we missed you ❤
"Dark mode" combined with "Red Shift or "Reading Mode" on Android (it disables blue light and help your sleep), is really handy when you are a nocturnal animal like i am lol
Have a great weekend my Belgium brother 🙏🏽💪🏽
Thanks! I also use both modes. Light mode during the day, dark mode in the evening.
Not using your phone for half an hour before going to bed helps your sleep much more. And your cortisol as well.
Gotta say, I appreciate the citations
Nice to see a video again from you 😄
Not liking the clickbait title. That hurts the content, which is mediocre at best and imho not up to your usual standard
Thanks for the feedback. Changed the title.
honestly i have noticed this q couple of months ago in my coding. now i use light mode or red
So turning your my screen into a flash bomb will help my eyes ?
Still, to stick to dark mode, the safety and health of my eyes are always the primary objective.
bugs are attracted to light LMAO
Holy shit some people did not like this video.
Honestly the part on the halation effect alone has convinced me to use light mode every so often, I've found myself missing spelling mistakes and making other text related blunders. Thought I just wasn't being thorough enough but now I realise it might be because every app I use, I use on dark mode constantly.
Good video, very interesting but could've been longer and you could have delved further into your points since people love, and i really mean LOVE dark mode.
I’m discovering that as well now 🫠
Dark Mode Functionality is versatile...
Facts and trade offs, not easy chewed information. A solid like! And a bell to!
First world problem if I ever saw one.
Hi, great video.
I just wanted to add that to most users, dark mode/light mode is not a choice. It is an accessibility issue.
Some users can not see well in pitch black dark mode. This particular evident in users with astigmatism.
Dark mode is not just for aesthetics or saving the battery life. It is about making the Internet more accessible.
White hurts muh eyes. True story.
I use light mode, it blinds the virgins
Goddamn it ain’t that serious bro.
Thanks for the info. Let's try light mode for a while and see how it goes.
I will disliked this because dark mode didn't mean stupid
It never hurt my eye
I will still use dark mode

It seems that you are adversely affected by this dark mode.

I only bought the Simply Explained domain name a few years ago. This was happy accident :)
better/worse... save power... increase efficiency... reduce eye strain... None of these arguments hold any significance for me. I have doubts about the validity of the findings on either side of the debate. It seems to me that the statements in both the thumbnail and the video title are contrived nonsense, barely supported in the video. I just prefer dark mode. I don't need another reason.

I really don't quite understand what you mean by this. So is it better to keep our phones in dark mode?
I wouls rather be stupid than blind
Difficult choice!

Clickbait. Reported, thumbs down, and unsubscribed.
This is naïve. Most of the content here exists to get attention. If content with misleading titles were to be removed there wouldn't be much left on RUclips... or tv or in movie theatres or on the web or in academic publications, or even in international governance.
First clickbait title I use. Get immediately punished for it. Title updated.

Yeah, and people used to gather bright fruits and berries in dark forests…
It's not like fruits are glowing... they don't have a different brightness, just a different color.
I missed the part where dark mode made me stupid.
Thumbs down from me.
Fair point. Changed the title.
Well, you watched the video and so did I, because I'm interested in dark mode... I don't know about you, but I definitely feel as though my intelligence has been lowered a bit 😅
should that even be a question? Unless you like getting slapped by bright sunlight from you screen you'd want dark. In the beginnng screen used to be dark then it got white because i used to be considered 'cool' now we are back to black.

bugs 😂
I hate dark mode. I hate dim screens. I can drive over 24 hours nonstop without eye strain. I love bright screens in dark rooms. What is wrong with me?
Font size has nothing to do with Dark Mode
I mainly use dark mode because it looks better to me and also, I clearly read better. So, none of this actually makes sense.
Im not falling for this anti dark mode propaganda
