@Gaming Champ So you're assuming I have a harder time reading with night mode. Didn't you read everything I wrote in the original comment? Dark mode does make it easier for me to read.
When dark mode first became available in MacOS I immediately switched to it. Now that I've been doing that for a while I switched back to light mode which I currently prefer. I have a feeling I'll be switching back and forth.
All I know is that light mode makes my eyes feel more tired/painful than anything else after extended use. The actual relief my eyes feel sometimes when switching to Dark Mode cannot be understated.
For me it's the inverse. When I use dark mode for long periods I get tired so I switch back to light mode. I should however point out that light mode only works well if you have a bright environment. If you're in the middle of the night and don't want to turn on your lights then both light and dark mode will be horrible for you.
yes, and no. at night it's better to use dark mode since your surrounding is dark and having the screen blasts your eyes with white pixels can be blinding at night. but it's the opposite during the day since your surrounding is bright, so people should use light mode to read texts easier as opposed to reading white on black, which can cause strain to the eyes.
While you are correct, you can also use room lights at night and have screen surrounded in bright background and this way light mode is still better. But that poses other threat - if you use too much light hour or so before sleep it affects your sleep badly. So it is better to use dark mode with blue light filter before bed. I think this video is talking mostly about screen usage during work tho. We have regulations for office to have certain amount of light and that means that it's lit enough to have our screens white background.
Doesn't really matter if it's "better" or not, what matters to me is that my eyes don't feel like they're on fire, which is what happens when I'm using my computer and everything is bright white. I physically have eye pain when there's a bright background.
Note that saving battery with dark mode ONLY works when having a OLED display. LCDs use the same amount of power regardless of showing black or white (or color). Unless it's a LCD with local dimming zones witch some TVs have. And then it would only work well with full-array backlight and alot of zones and not crap edge-lit displays like most TVs are. On OLED you won't get halo effect. And I read just as easy with dark mode as with light mode. Actually a little better. So this is individual
@@aktw1234 It might just be that the light reflects at the back of the glass that lies in front of the screen so it kinda gives a halo effect. I have seen something like that on older OLEDs. But it's not like the halo effect you get on LCD screens
LCDs would actually use slightly more power (though probably not noticeable at all) if there were more black pixels, as the pixels would need more power to darken.
I use dark mode for everything except for reading books on my phone. I think dark mode just looks and fells better, but also, for reading a book I prefer light mode because it's what I'm used but I do use a "blue light filter" for reading because it makes the screen slightly yellow and looks like paper from my books so it's more confortable for reading for a long period of time
@@aktw1234 I'm still using an ipad 1, and the display on dark mode extends the battery significantly. I use it mainly for watching movies & videos, and reading. I can read all night on dark mode, but the time get's cut by more than half if I use paper white mode. It has an LCD screen.
@@d.e.b.b5788 Ok nice anecdote but LCDs draw the same amount of power displaying light or dark images. To say otherwise is literally arguing against physics.
@@aktw1234 I only report my own experience with the device. I am not an engineer nor physicist. I have a degree in nursing and chemistry, so I do have some background in the sciences. But I do not have enough information, nor the instruments to determine why a device apparently uses more energy in one mode, as compared to another. The only difference I can discern is the amount of light coming off of the screen. What is your hypothesis?
I'm old enough to have started with monochrome displays with dark background. When I added a physical switch to my home computer to invert colors, dark on white background, it was a huge benefit to readability and eye strain, and I used it all the time, except (for obvious reasons) in a chess program. While this benefit has been reduced with better screen technology, I still find light background to be much better. When "team dark" acolytes talk about "searing white light", I suspect that this is because the brightness was turned up to cope with the worse readability using dark background. While this makes dark background "less bad" for readability, it does mean that the same brightness is not well-tuned for just switching to light mode. Arguably, dark background can make good sense around video content dominating the display. Of course, the battery life factor is real, but only with OLED (or similar) displays. With the still rather widespread LCD displays, the full backlight is turned on all the time, and blocked by individual LCD pixels to display dark.
Dark-mode only saves battery for OLED screens where each pixel is an LED; but for LCD screens and "LED" screens, the LED backlight is still on even for dark areas (though more advanced screens might have "local-dimming" which turns off sections of the backlight). The LCD just acts as a mask to block the light from the LED backlight. Of course OLEDs have their disadvantages as well like good old-fashioned burn-in.
I'm dyslexic which you will find out with the bad spelling in the next couple of lines. However I struggle a lot reading light mode. I'm so glad that dark mode has come along. I hope it's not damaging my eyes because it's the only way I can read successfully on a phone. I also wish more PC programs would adopt dark mode so that I can really get on with my job
I find Dark Mode much easier on the eyes at night. I also, don’t appreciate manufacturers argument :”its just better for you...”. No! Can I decide what’s best for me? Can i have that choice? Apple and Google have been dragging their feet on this, when it comes to mobile.
No, you really, really can’t decide what’s better for you. I use Dark Mode on absolutely everything, simply because I find it more enjoyable, but I’m afraid that you cannot simply decide what is best for you. I can’t just make the decision that smoking six packs a day and guzzling a few beers before bed is good for me. I might prefer that to the alternative, sure, but it’s not good for my health.
@@aktw1234 All of them. manufacturers always like to tell us what's best for us; and coincidentally, whatever makes them the most money is what they tell us is best for us. Funny how that works out, isn't it.

I can't read white text on black background sites like HardOCP for more than a minute without it causing me serious eye strain. Imgur is okay though where I'm mostly looking at pics and short comments. I prefer light mode on my phone but turn the brightness down and the phone blocks blue light near bedtime.
I totally agree with you!!! I used dark mode for more than 4 years (2018-2022) and lately I started to notice that it was difficult for me to read in dark mode. For example- news, articles, editorials, basically anything which consists of big paragraphs! So, from the end of 2022 I am using light mode again. Although initial days were difficult to adjust because of 4 years of dark mode, but now it's easier to read and it's also good for productivity. The only thing I miss from my dark mode days is how good the aesthetics were and still are in dark mode! But it won't be the reason for me to go back.
Saturation is also really important. Tumblr recently switched to a really saturated blue "due to accessibility reasons" and my eyes cant take it. The earlier greyer and more muted blue was better. I'd really love a light mode for Tumblr
I use Twilight app to turn my entire screen red, ironically I lose my battery power faster and my phone starts to get kinda hot especially when I'm playing games.
Does anyone notice that you get an after image when you look away after reading text on a black background? It’s one reason why I don’t like dark mode.
I prefer to use Night Shift on my iPhone instead of Night mode in apps that support it, i find that blue light emitted from the letters hurt my eyes more than an orange shadow cast through the whole screen
I use light mode since begining. I really feel comfortable. Even though everyone keep shaming over not using dark mode at reddit. Its Personal choice and i will use it.
i often have light theme on and my computer/phone with very low brightness, it actualy helps a lot with reading for myself. i do however recomend using dark theme when you can in low light areas or before you go to bed
There's actually no reason that old CRT computers had to use black backgrounds. While yes, it is black when it turned off, so are LED screens and a good amount of LCD screens. There's actually no reason other than convenience that old computer used black backgrounds. They could've used colored backgrounds if they wanted to. Actually, you can just put a polarizer on any screen display to invert the colors, and that's what most LCDs do. Old CRT based computers had a binary option for color through a single pin. So all that was needed to do if you wanted to flip it was just use a couple of wires and a transistor (which computers were made of many thousands and today millions upon billions) to make the signal opposite of what was sent. Though, admittedly, some display types made that harder, though those weren't introduced until later when color display became a thing
I use dark mode for reading and I have for years. It started when I was young and got a kindle, the sepia tone dragged me into the shadows, and gradually the full black was the way to go. White backgrounds are too bright and a true assault to the eyes. I have custom themes on many websites and a Chrome extension to alter what doesn't have a dark mode option. I'll never go back.
Same I usebdark mode extenwion on all my browsers, even on safari. I wont ever turn it off for sure :) I also like how colors are pop out more on dark mode.
I also would recommend dark mode when you get closer to your own personal sleeping schedule. Brighter colors "wake you up" more (more or less obviously) and can make it harder for you to get sleepy or enter a "resting mentality". On the other hand, when im working i use light mode for the most part.
i knew i wasnt crazy for hating dark mode, it hurts my eyes. I also can't look at a screen without a yellow tinted blue light filter on it. so combine yellow tint with light mode and im happy
I'm a programmer and I have notice this effect. I'm in front of my computer basically all day, and trying to read long comments on YT with dark mode it's really difficult, most dark modes have this problems, that's why when I have to read long texts I use light mode, like in the browser looking at documentation, but strangely enough I can't do the same for codding, probably because the contrast of the dark background with the color of the keywords is way better that with a light background, also you are not really reading when you are codding in the same way than a long paragraph.
I have my phone and computer in light mode and then put individual apps in either light or dark depending which I prefer for that app. And before I ever heard what you say in this video I've tended toward light mode for reading and dark mode for video. I suspect the fact that I'm in my 60's and my eyes need more light influences my decision on this. My favorite is kindle's sepia tone with dark brown text. It is real easy on my eyes.
I tried using Dark Mode all day but eh I just can’t during the day. Even sometimes the Dark Mode / Night Shift together still strains my eyes at night... that I have to dim it down even more. It helps for me 😅
Instead of just black on white use the olive green mode with light green print . Depends what I am wearing brown mode with beige lettering is my favourite when I am dressed in Harris tweed of similar tones. Used a florescent orange and black lettering at Halloween But thought I could get locked up for living a second childhood.
I think a huge factor is just the quality of your screen. My super cheap laptop doesn't have a very high quality screen and therefore it takes no time for my eyes to start feeling strain while typing papers. However, when I type papers on my Galaxy 9 phone, I can look at the screen with ease whether dark or light (though I prefer dark).
My preference for a long time for large portions of text has been black text on a GRAY background... all the advantages of light-mode but without the large expanses of blinding white. I did this specifically because I noticed I had an easier time reading dark on light than I did vice versa... but I also really have a problem with large blocks of bright colors & eye strain. Far as dark mode goes, I have a preference for it on CLIs... but that might just be from familiarity LOL. I've also occasionally made the text gray for CLI, which after watching the video I'm guessing would help deal with the contrast/light bloom issues
I often switch from using dark mode to using light mode, because I get sick of it after some time. Right now I am using dark mode again and I'm loving it. Let's see how it looks in a few weeks.
I used dark mode for two days now my eyes hurt so I watch this video to confirm. Dark mode is good in day time. Low contrast dark mode is is ok for my eye at night. Love the look of Dark mode apps but it's hurt.
I think it should be an automatic thing. A white background hurts my eyes if the smartphone is the main light source at night. But I cannot read text in dark mode when I am outside in the sunshine.

1. Good ambient lighting gets rid of that issue. 2. That's an issue indeed. 3. Don't use full white text on a full black background. If you want a #000 background use gray text.
As an Olde Pharte, I will NEVER go back to dark mode. After years of early computing with white or green text on black background... ...it was AMAZING to finally read things the same way as printed material. Unlike those early days it is so much better to have a choice now and let each person decide for themselves.
Slight note on dark mode saving battery life: With a pure LED based display like OLED, this is certainly true. However, with ordinary LCDs, the pixels being on or off is almost irrelevant, with the brightness of the background light being more important by far.
I use dark mode for RUclips. And I have used it for reading when I need a low light reading because it can be easier for me in a dark room and makes my eyes feel more at ease
Talking about skeumorphism - I worked on one of the very first Word Processors back in the late 70's called a "Lexitron," and it was so skeumorphic, it actually had A ROUND MECHANICAL KNOB ON EITHER SIDE OF THE (vertical) SCREEN like on a typewriter that you rotated to slide the document up or down on the screen from page to page!
I just turned DM on a second ago and came here for more info. Tnx for making vid. Basically, I use 3rd party software that puts a yellow filter over my whole screen and adjusts automatically due to personal settings and time of day. It's great and much better for your eyes.
Personally i prefer dark mode cause i fell the excess of light to be disturbing, especially when using the device inside, or during the night. Even tho i recognize it takes me slightly longer to get my eyes to read compared to when i use a lighter mode
The Xerox Alto did not support color. Indeed, the Alto engineers (except Richard Shoup) shunned the idea. "Color is just better" wasn't the conventional thinking in business machines at the time, even when we made the shift to bitmapped displays. Kudos for including Amiga screenshots.
I use dark at night and light at day. I've heard it's bad to use dark mode in bright environments. It's hard to use dark mode at day too. But at night I also use a filter app which allows me to make my brightness even lower and add redness to avoid eye strain
Ophthalmologists say that it's not the dark/white mode that affects vision, but the contrast, i.e., the differences from dark to white subject matter. Since most sites have a white theme one way or another, it is more rational to use a white theme in this sense (or an extension that will make all sites dark, but extensions only work in the browser, apps can still only have a white theme, especially on phones).
I just want less light coming straight from the screen. I'm okay with using a separate light source in many conditions, and would rather have a full colour e-ink display that uses less energy. But, I'd really need it to be much faster, hopefully faster at refreshing than even LCD displays for me to consider using it as a daily driver. It's just a shame that displays are actually harder to see when there's more ambient light, rather than actually making it more paper-like.
Dark mode, along with blue light reduction (i.e. night mode) helps to preserve night vision. For a pilot, this can be a huge benefit to one's health, as not being able to see could have some pretty serious consequences.
For me, it's never been about what's supposedly "better" for my eyes.
I just don't like having a big white flashlight aimed at my face all day.

@@Luxalpa Yeah this is what I do. I've set my device to switch to dark mode in the evenings/after sunset but otherwise use light mode.
I use dark mode only on RUclips because it looks cool. Nothing else. ( I don't do to much reading on RUclips :) )
Yes the dark mode in messenger is really freaking ugly
I was going to comment the exact same thing.
It sucks that the app launch screen is bright white tho...
RUclips was even originally using "black" mode for android?
@@Lord_Magikarp it always blinds me
I use night shift from sunset to sunrise, and I use dark mode all the time.
yes, and no.
at night it's better to use dark mode since your surrounding is dark and having the screen blasts your eyes with white pixels can be blinding at night. but it's the opposite during the day since your surrounding is bright, so people should use light mode to read texts easier as opposed to reading white on black, which can cause strain to the eyes.
@@BomberLT What blue light filter app can you recommend?
You can always lower the brightness of your display at night to lessen the strain.
@@o.sunsfamily Windows 10 has built in night light filter and I use app called "Twilight" for Android. Most people recommend "f.lux" for other OS.
@@BomberLT Thank you very much Sir! Twilight is working good!
Doesn't really matter if it's "better" or not, what matters to me is that my eyes don't feel like they're on fire, which is what happens when I'm using my computer and everything is bright white. I physically have eye pain when there's a bright background.
i literally agree with you and after using the light mod for long years, i found a big difference when i switched to dark mod and it is way better
I still get the halo effect on my OLED device. It's pretty old tho so maybe OLED tech has improved.
@@aktw1234 It might just be that the light reflects at the back of the glass that lies in front of the screen so it kinda gives a halo effect. I have seen something like that on older OLEDs. But it's not like the halo effect you get on LCD screens
@Joe Al sAMOLED and AMOLED are OLED... It's just variations of the same thing. To keep it simple and short
LCDs would actually use slightly more power (though probably not noticeable at all) if there were more black pixels, as the pixels would need more power to darken.
FWIW, my ipad 1 lasts about twice as long when using dark mode to read vs paper white type mode.
I use dark mode for everything except for reading books on my phone.
I think dark mode just looks and fells better, but also, for reading a book I prefer light mode because it's what I'm used but I do use a "blue light filter" for reading because it makes the screen slightly yellow and looks like paper from my books so it's more confortable for reading for a long period of time
I never cared if dark mode was better for my eyes~
It was always it looks aesthetically pleasing and it extends battery life~
Kyle Hudsons Only on LCD's
@@nutbuster3862 oleds you mean
What manufacturer?
Just turn on room lights...
@@aktw1234 All of them. manufacturers always like to tell us what's best for us; and coincidentally, whatever makes them the most money is what they tell us is best for us. Funny how that works out, isn't it.
@@ligametis Why turn on the rest of the lights if they're not needed? Seems kind of a complete waste, just so you can conform to what the rest of the world thinks is best.
I can't read white text on black background sites like HardOCP for more than a minute without it causing me serious eye strain. Imgur is okay though where I'm mostly looking at pics and short comments. I prefer light mode on my phone but turn the brightness down and the phone blocks blue light near bedtime.
My doctor thinks that my eyesight has been getting worse because of computers.
I can’t help it, it’s part of my job
Get a better doctor, as far as we know digital eye strain doesn't cause long term damage .
I’m on dark mode on everything, if they don’t have it sometimes I’ll just use inverted colors if it’s on my phone :P
Domagoj Matijević true I keep Night Mode on 24/7. That's what we really need an episode on.
@Bedazzled Blue no.
I am watching this with youtube dark mode
i knew i wasnt crazy for hating dark mode, it hurts my eyes. I also can't look at a screen without a yellow tinted blue light filter on it. so combine yellow tint with light mode and im happy
I really like Dark Mode a lot especially the one implemented by RUclips
Betteridge's law of headlines is an adage that states: "Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no."
Nice.
Switched back to light mode. Feels great
I'm a programmer and I have notice this effect.
I’ve historically preferred light mode, but the main thing that makes me want to consider dark mode is (yeehah!) “floaters.”
Gary Morrison Hahahaha me too dark theme is floaters friendly
i cant stand blue themes because of blue field entopic phenomena rip.
You're not alone
I have my phone and computer in light mode and then put individual apps in either light or dark depending which I prefer for that app. And before I ever heard what you say in this video I've tended toward light mode for reading and dark mode for video. I suspect the fact that I'm in my 60's and my eyes need more light influences my decision on this. My favorite is kindle's sepia tone with dark brown text. It is real easy on my eyes.
You only save battery life on dark mode if your phone has an emissive display (such as OLED)
This was literally one of the cutest cheddar videos lol
I don't care if it isn't actually better for my eyes. It just looks better.
I actually prefer the look of Light Mode.
So you are choosing looks over health?
I only use dark mode at night and when I’m in a dark place
My light sensitive eyes: Dark mode saves my life.
I tried using Dark Mode all day but eh I just can’t during the day. Even sometimes the Dark Mode / Night Shift together still strains my eyes at night... that I have to dim it down even more.
It helps for me 😅
Tbh I use it only because i like how it looks
Instead of just black on white
use the olive green mode
with light green print .
Depends what I am wearing
brown mode with beige lettering
is my favourite when I am dressed in Harris tweed of similar tones.
Used a florescent orange and black lettering at Halloween
But thought I could get locked up for living a second childhood.
i swr reddit has that?
I don't care what anyone else thinks. Dark mode is the best.
Me: Sees video *turns on dark mode*
Me Again: sees 3:01 "turns on light mode"
Literally me rn😂😂👍🏻
My preference for a long time for large portions of text has been black text on a GRAY background... all the advantages of light-mode but without the large expanses of blinding white. I did this specifically because I noticed I had an easier time reading dark on light than I did vice versa... but I also really have a problem with large blocks of bright colors & eye strain.
Far as dark mode goes, I have a preference for it on CLIs... but that might just be from familiarity LOL. I've also occasionally made the text gray for CLI, which after watching the video I'm guessing would help deal with the contrast/light bloom issues
I had yt darkmode on since it came and just turned it back
Trust me it’s weird...
I often switch from using dark mode to using light mode, because I get sick of it after some time. Right now I am using dark mode again and I'm loving it. Let's see how it looks in a few weeks.
yeah same
7 hours, more like 17. Step your game up Grandpa
Make that 22 🤣 + more 4 hours. Till we become sleep deprived.
I used dark mode for two days now my eyes hurt so I watch this video to confirm.
Dark mode is good in day time. Low contrast dark mode is is ok for my eye at night.
Love the look of Dark mode apps but it's hurt.
Twitter's dark mode is perfect to me
Or discord dark mode
I think it should be an automatic thing. A white background hurts my eyes if the smartphone is the main light source at night. But I cannot read text in dark mode when I am outside in the sunshine.
A video on the dangers of over-lit florescent lighting in offices would be great. Dark mode forever and for everything.
I need to add a dark theme on my website soon
I always preferred light mode and now there's even science to back it up.

Anime and Stuff Agreed, I'm honestly not much for social media in general. I do browse Reddit and Twitter occasionally, and watch RUclips a lot, but everything else aside from contacting people easily, no thanks. Instagram and snapchat and such, they're not entertaining, it's just a waste of time.
1. Good ambient lighting gets rid of that issue.
2. That's an issue indeed.
3. Don't use full white text on a full black background. If you want a #000 background use gray text.
4:49 10k+ minutes to 1472 minutes, legit maths!
As an Olde Pharte, I will NEVER go back to dark mode. After years of early computing with white or green text on black background... ...it was AMAZING to finally read things the same way as printed material. Unlike those early days it is so much better to have a choice now and let each person decide for themselves.
Well, my life is already in dark mode

I can't believe it's already a year since I write this. Time passed, nothing done.
Ok...
Dark mode is like sitting in the shade outside in the middle of summer, its convenient and relaxing and doesnt give you a heatstroke
The white hurts my eyes and I don’t have to lower the screen brightness.
Slight note on dark mode saving battery life: With a pure LED based display like OLED, this is certainly true. However, with ordinary LCDs, the pixels being on or off is almost irrelevant, with the brightness of the background light being more important by far.
I use dark mode for RUclips. And I have used it for reading when I need a low light reading because it can be easier for me in a dark room and makes my eyes feel more at ease
studies show it decreases proofreading and readability. While no studies show benefits of dark mode
Forgot to mention that dark mode only saves battery on devices with OLED displays...
I just turned DM on a second ago and came here for more info. Tnx for making vid. Basically, I use 3rd party software that puts a yellow filter over my whole screen and adjusts automatically due to personal settings and time of day. It's great and much better for your eyes.
No race is better, all are equal. WHY DARK MODE?
Personally i prefer dark mode cause i fell the excess of light to be disturbing, especially when using the device inside, or during the night. Even tho i recognize it takes me slightly longer to get my eyes to read compared to when i use a lighter mode

Using dark mode makes feel like a sketchy person surfing the dark web LMAO such cheesy...
Unless you talk about OLED screen, dark mode won't save any juice. LCD's have always on backlight unit regardless of what colour it shows.
What about moonlight and spotlight mode?
The Xerox Alto did not support color. Indeed, the Alto engineers (except Richard Shoup) shunned the idea. "Color is just better" wasn't the conventional thinking in business machines at the time, even when we made the shift to bitmapped displays.
Kudos for including Amiga screenshots.
In my experience the switch to night mode and changing apps to black mode then rarely got head aches as often as I used to when I used light mode.
Since most sites have a white theme one way or another, it is more rational to use a white theme in this sense (or an extension that will make all sites dark, but extensions only work in the browser, apps can still only have a white theme, especially on phones).
reduce the white balance point, it would feel slightly softer to the eyes
i use dark-mode only in night, light mode is better for reading though..
For a pilot, this can be a huge benefit to one's health, as not being able to see could have some pretty serious consequences.
also pilot doesn't need to read all the time
