- In this video I talk about a really great book you can use to learn how to write proofs. It is called How To Prove It and it was written by Velleman.

Thank you:)
I appreciate that you do repeat reviews of books like these. I forget about them sometimes
Really love this book! I got it off eBay based on your recommendation, studying it every single day and have been doing the exercises, done a bit challenging. I'm on chapter 4 now on Relations. Really love it.
Another good one is Book of Proof by Richard Hammack
Years ago, I needed to know something about Group Theory (motivated by crystal symmetry and electronic structure), so I took an Abstract Algebra course from the Mathematics Department. I'm a Physics/Engineering Geek, so I compute stuff; and trust the Mathematicians to prove stuff. I went into the class without "knowing the rules of the game".
Yes, that is true. This proof-oriented reasoning is the highest level that can be achieved in mathematics. Many professors, especially the good old professors, rightly say that you only learn to prove things after university, namely in research. Best regards.
Love this channel, I actually read a bunch of how to write proofs as a maths undergraduate at university
I read that book for a class on writing proofs. It was an enjoyable experience. Of course, occasionally it was challenging; some of the proofs are pretty lengthy. But the deductive process is well-defined in each of many types of logical reasoning.
Among all proof writing books that I have read, this one is unique and the most that I like
Your videos make me happy
I have this book. Pretty excellent! Get it. Give it a shot.
Get to this channel is my first thing in the morning 😊
came at the perfect time... i was just recently wanting to learn proofs lol
I thought your most recent proofs book was "Proofs: A Long-Form Mathematics Textbook" by Jay Cummings
I've heard nothing but positive things about this book, im planning on getting it this week! BTW you should do more livestreams, you haven't done one in forever!
I also have these books:
The Nuts and Bolts of Proofs by Antonella Cupillari
How to Read and Do Proofs by Daniel Solow
The book by Solow is accompanied by a series of videos. Together they comprise a good course and well recommended. As Solow states proof writing is as much an art as a science, it is creative and in that sense it cannot be taught. The only way to become proficient is to "do proofs" i.e. get your hands dirty, much the same as Math is not a spectator sport, you need to get involved. Reading proofs is the gateway to a whole host of other topics. My opinion is that proof reading and writing are essential if you wish to go further and really understand the how and why of mathematics.
Thanks for the video.
I want to learn mathematics, but I have no idea how proofs work... Thank you for the video!
The one I bought on Amazon has solutions for selected exercises! I believe it was a new edition, I am not quite sure.
3rd edition has partial solutions to starred exercises
Day 5 Of Getting First Streaks
Day 1 of commenting on your first streaks
Oh dear! Had I seen this video earlier. I was at the library earlier and saw the exact same book. I thought nothing of it.😢.
I’m going to get this book. But aside from that.. once more: Is mathematics discovered or invented? Kronecker famously thought everything except the integers was invented. Chomsky recently said sets and set theory are human inventions. Paul Halmos thought it was all discovered. Erdos seems to me to think at least all the most perfect proofs exist in platonic fashion in “the book”. What say ye, dear Sorcerer?
The most recent edition, edition 3, has solutions to at least some of the exercises from each chapter in an appendix at the back. Continues to be a great book.
Is that the best book for proof
I think it’s one of the best yes, worth it.
Another really good one is called Book of Proof by Richard Hammack
Just bought this one and the one with a red cover "
Proofs: A Long-Form Mathematics Textbook"
He had to smell it. That's something you should do in the privacy of your bedroom and not make us watch. :D
wow🎉🎉🎉🎉
It is unthinkable to me that there exist math courses that aren't proof based.
Hey you should check out the book named cengage
Its just so much nicely written and well explained
You will love it
I think the proof writing book by Chartrand and co “Transition to Advanced Mathematics” is superior to this book by Velleman. Especially considering that the Chartrand book gives detailed answers
Sorry for off the topic question. I found your amazing courses on Udemy and planning to take most of them. I just don't know how to navigate them. If you can guide me with a roadmap, this will be perfect.
Thank you so much for this video. I'd like to ask you something: Which one is better, Cummings book or this one you have showed in this video?
If someone wants to explore math, which paths are there?
Got it in my personal math library here at home!!! Yaaaay!!!
I have read the first two chapter of this book, and did almost all the problem in this book. One thing that I would say that this book is very detailed, anyone can pick up this book and learn from it since it doesn't demand any prerequisite knowledge to understand the chapters. However this book is quite tedious and unless you have strong focus, you'd eventually lose interest in learning it.
I would say the reasons you think that is because the first two chapters are focused on logic, which is a little tedious in my opinion (but I guess it is necessary, or at least advantageous)
I did not do proof writing with this book, but it should get much more enjoyable when you will get to prove algebraic statements and it will only get better from then on!
