I’m in my mid thirties. Puerto Rican, lived nearly all of my life in 🇺🇸…. folks that know me well might think some of my musical tastes are “eclectic” or “out of the norm” for what the typical i fiancé’s where for me and my generation. I know NOTHING about Irish music…. But I know a powerful, GENUINE performance when I see one.. this is AMAZING.

When Luke died, the band disbanded and it was quite a long time before they re-formed. When they did so, they picked as their first venue the little Scottish Highland village of Muir of Ord, just a short distance from my home village of Beauly. I was away at the time, but, on the strength of my love for the band, my brother and mother went to the concert where they were blown away by the performance. In particular, they were moved by Barney, who, on being introduced to do his usual solo, said simply "This is for Luke," and performed his routine with tears streaming down his face from start to finish.

When I was growing up in the 60's, we had an old record player, and 3 LP's, 2 Dubliners, which were my Dads, and 1 Guy Mitchell, which was my Mums. It was all we had to play, and they were played ALL THE TIME!, so this really brought back memories for me. By the 70;s we had a fancy stereo, and a lot more LP's, but after Luke died, my father never bought another Dubliners LP, and the 2 we had were played out, I inherited them when Dad died, they would be quare and crackly by now, but they are precious to me.
2 days ago my Dads cousin died, she is near the last of that generation, my nephew down in County Clare was listening to Luke Kelly singing "Thank you for the days", when his conservatory door blew open, his baby was sitting in his wee chair, and he started laughing, he looked like he was looking at something or someone, and he giggled for ages, we are taking it as a sign that Dad met his cousin, and he popped in to let us all know that all is good, and what better song than "Thank you for the days" :-)

TWO banjos! I went to see about a gig in a local club that was in a high-crime neighborhood. I forgot that my banjo was in the back seat of my car. While I was inside the club, chatting with the owner, I realized that I left the banjo in the car. I rushed out, but my worst fears were confirmed....the back window was broken, and now there were TWO banjos in the back seat!

My dad was born in Limerick, and he introduced me to Luke at a young age. We often debated the merits of Dick Gaughan’s or Luke’s version of On Raglan Road, a close race.
The part about ‘let grief be a fallen leaf’ was read at his funeral. A nice circle I felt.
Luke Kelly’s voice is heard in my house every day, as are Kavanagh’s words.

Ooooh I luuvvv the Irish voice and sound (my Irish roots) But I need an interpreter. I am in Australia and as soon as I hear an Irish voice - my head turns round and I have to say hello. Being a granny - I feel I can do this now, whereas I would have been too shy in my younger days or youth. A benefit of getting old and grey. So Hello to all my Irish family and friends that are still strangers, until I meet you ;-)

You would nearly always bump into a friend , or Someone you knew, which would lead to a long night on the Town.
but that night of Luke’s passing, the Pubs were morbidly silent.
