"Sorry, Wrong Number"was written by Lucille Fletcher. Her husband Bernard Hermann scored the music (and many other radio shows including Alfred Hitchcock's movie "Psycho"). "Sorry, Wrong Number" is probably the most popular radio drama of all time. It was also done on "SUSPENSE" 8 times from 1943 until 1961 when the show ended. All of those performances starred Agnes Moorehead in a 30 minute version. In 1955, Miriam Hopkins flew to Sydney, Australia and performed it for the Australian LUX Radio Theatre in the only 60 minute radio version known to exist.
It is extremely well done and the plot is more developed due to the longer time slot. Miriam Hopkins is ably assisted by the creme of Australian radio actors of the time. The 60 minute restored version is available through Radio Archives in their Archives Treasures Volume 23.

This rebroadcast was done because of a miscue at the climax of the previous broadcast which left many listeners confused. The killer said his climatic line before the operator/police switchboard which was to deliver the set-up line, when he should have said it after.

If you listen really close, in the background you can hear all the other operators standing around laughing.

Hans Conreid was one of the great American character actors. He played the title role in the fantasy film The 5,000 Fingers of Dr T. I enjoy him particularly in his two appearances in the second season of I Love Lucy, first as 'Dan Jenkins, second-hand furniture man', and then as Mr Livermore, the English tutor who wanted to perform at the Tropicana.

I always hated "Sorry, Wrong Number" for as far back as I can remember. Every time I hear it again, it just grates on me worse. Born in 1963, I had heard party lines, and know what it is to listen in on others' conversations.
But, the only thing this story has going for it, is the 25 minutes build up of indifference, frustration, and outright stupidity of the participants, finishing off with a 2 minute ironic twist at the end. It's very much like a slough of crappy horror movies where the protagonists have "I'm a dumb victim," stamped upon their foreheads throughout the films. Well, if the victim is going to be that dumb and annoying, you know I'm rooting for the killer.
I simply cannot understand or appreciate why anyone would find this miserable tripe entertaining. But, people do, and that is why this program and its format are immensely popular in our culture. I can only take that as a very negative commentary about the (lack of) intelligence and values of our culture.

This isn't one of Suspense's best, but I hardly think your extrapolation to our "culture" and the radio format being "popular" makes any sense.

      Don't listen to it.
Personally I think it shows a lot of talent.
Mrs Morehead carries the entire program alone.
      It's entertaining

      "Proto Karen."
