    Just 6 bet shove or raise that micro flop bet. QQ needs protection from that 10 percent flop bet. Pot is already huge to take it down or lose to AA or KK. Why wait for a scared card to come? You don't always have to let someone barrel off.

    • @88mphDrBrown
      @88mphDrBrown 2 года назад +1

      AK could definitely shove that river, it's 1/3 of the pot and all of his bets were light. It really looks most like AA, but KK, JJ, and AK are possible. You would expect a larger 5! pre from AK or KK, but with how much players incorporate different sizings to protect their range it's not out of the realm of possibility. I think the real answer to your question is that he thought Winter would never play a bluff like that, it's completely unorthodox and illogical for any bluff to keep laying great prices that minimize fold equity. Given the sizings I think Ali should've made his river decision on the turn if it bricked off.

The other baffling thing is that he put 1.8+ mil into the pot when he called the K turn, then folds and leaves 1.2 mil behind. I thought he was planning to snap any bet that was non ace. Ali had me very confused there. He knows if he calls the turn that he might face a river jam, so I thought he was prepared. I'm saying this with the utmost respect for Ali. • @davidleonard7439
      @davidleonard7439 2 года назад

      Because he seems to be an amateur, himself.
      In hindsight, he felt like he was trapping but he made so many mistakes. He SHOULD have maybe came over the top and shoved pre-flop, especially since Winter used a time bank. I caught that tell, instantly.
      Flat calling the flop, was beyond idiotic. If he didn't shove pre-flop, it should have been on the flop and at the EXTREME LEAST he definitely should have raised big....It's SENSELESS to flat call a flop bet, while only putting your opponent on AK or a middle pair. If he truly felt his opponent had AA or KK, why even call the 250k flop bet? That's a waste of money. Smh. Especially when a king comes on the turn 🤦‍♂️
      The most important lesson I've learned in poker, is not to WASTE MONEY!!! Even calling for information is a waste of money. Flat calling bets all the way to the river, JUST TO FOLD ON THE RIVER, is the most novice move in poker. Pot commitment is the biggest waste of money.

    • @Nick-xu7ns
      @Nick-xu7ns 2 года назад +1

      In very basic terms, I believe Ali views it as unlikely for him to get called by a worse hand when he raises. Winter has a lot of AA and KK here, and some air/AK that folds. Ali likely thinks his raise results in all worse hands folding and all better hands calling, which is pretty detrimental to a long term strategy.
      There’s a lot more that goes into the thought process here than that, including ICM (Independent Chip Model) considerations which change the evaluations of certain plays because when you are deep in the money +chipEV decisions are not always +$EV and vice versa. And I also think there’s a slight difference in perceived ranges from both players by both players here. But that’s the very basic version of the thought process that I’m assuming (again could be wrong) Ali is using here on the flop.

    • @furbs9999
      @furbs9999 2 года назад

      @@Nick-xu7ns I can maybe understand in a cash game, but this isn't and there was already enough in the pot, win the hand and move on. And if he thought he was maybe already behind, why keep calling? What was he hoping to happen on the turn and river?

    • @Nick-xu7ns
      @Nick-xu7ns 2 года назад

      @@furbs9999 it’s not that he’s necessarily behind of everything. Winter can’t call a raise with a worse hand, but he can certainly bet with a worse hand. Raising folds out all of the stuff that he beats. Which means any further money entering the pot is only from hands he loses to. This is a pretty detrimental scenario for Ali if he’s putting more money in the pot.
      As for why call earlier streets if you’re going to fold later streets, every bet in a hand of poker narrows ranges further, which is why you always should be folding some portion of your range to any bet (this portion is directly proportional to the size of the bet) or else you will be calling too often and hemorrhaging money. Ali likely evaluates that he’s at a range disadvantage on the flop being the preflop flatter so he can certainly be behind with QQ, but QQ is too strong of a hand to fold in this spot without ranges becoming narrower which is why he calls. On the turn it’s a much tougher spot as much of Winter’s bluff range improves, but Ali probably views himself as either being too high in his range to fold to this size or as Winter still being wide enough to warrant a call as he could still have hands like AdTd or Ad5d if he 5bets those (he may not given the ICM implications but it all depends on what Ali perceives his range to be, not what it actually is). On the river, with the third bet, Ali will again have to fold some amount of his hands that called the turn. QQ is basically the worst hand he can have here (unless he has some 4bet Ax of diamonds combos that flat the 5bet which might just not be true given the stack sizes and ICM) so he may make the decision to fold all QQ with diamond here (as having the Qd lowers the chance Winter is bluffing with missed flush draws which are his most natural bluffs on this exact line) or maybe just all QQ, I’m uncertain of his entire strategy there. But it’s clear he makes this decision on the turn that this combo of QQ, for him, is part of the turn calling and river folding ranges.
      It’s a weird line from both players given the spot and sizings chosen, but I imagine, if checked in a solver, Ali’s line is much closer to optimal than Winter’s.

Now, his table demeanor is dead serious like Jason Statham at poker table.

    ICM implications with Sean and Ali having near identical stacks at the start of the hand, while Jake is much shorter, should tighten ranges a bit. That mixed with Ali holding the Qd, makes this fold seem not too egregious by any means. Interesting line by Sean. I doubt that it’s optimal long term, but I don’t really think anything Ali does here is that bad. He basically has the worst hand he can have here on the river, other than maybe some Ax flush draws, though, again for ICM reasons, many of those are more inclined to fold/flat pre than 4bet.

    • @CanadianLoveKnot
      @CanadianLoveKnot 2 года назад +2

      By your logic then Winters line doesn't make sense, as he should also play much tighter against a stack that just covers him, as he has no incentive the play a big pot here (Jake has 38 BB so he is not that short). So when he does this, he's only repping a set of JJs or KKs, even AA it's thin of a river jam, because he's only beating AK which he blocks, QQs and 10s which won't call. And Aces probably don't take this line, as I think aces bets bigger on the flop, and or will check behind on turn for pot control to avoid JJ and KK. Even if he takes this line I don't see Aces jamming river if he is betting small on flop and turn with ICM implications. He would just go for a crying call to get max vaue.

    • @markkelso871
      @markkelso871 2 года назад +1

      Why would aces bet bigger on flop. Opponent just called a 5 bet. Their range is super weighed to having 2 outs or AK. His sizing is literally perfect imo.

    • @markkelso871
      @markkelso871 2 года назад +1

      @@CanadianLoveKnot he doesnt check river with aces because like you said, opponent only has AK QQ there that sre worst (hands he is VERY likely to have given preflop) and will literally check back 100% of the time with these and will only bet when he has AA beat or some sort of preposterous bluff of which I don't know of any that exist. You have to bet to protect your already thin bluff range and also to get value from these hands. Its a narrow range but this hand is super narrow already.

    • @CanadianLoveKnot
      @CanadianLoveKnot 2 года назад +1

      @@markkelso871 If he has Aces than how can Ali be weight towards AK? Since Winter blocks AK? Aces in a 5 bet pot is actually very vulnerable, since Ali is actually weighted towards big pairs not AK. If Winter has AA here, and Ali calls a 5bet in position. - AA doesn't really want to bet 10% of pot here, instead he wants to setup a turn jam on a brick based on the SPR is below 1 before the flop along with ICM considerations - Aces might even just jam flop to be honest - the pot is already huge - and again Ali is weighted towards big pairs. When the K comes on the turn, it's actually a really bad card now in a 5 bet pot. Winter is hoping Ali has AK, and should want to check call OOP here now, because Ali can easily have JJ and KK at this point, and AK will either bet turn in position or will call a river bet if it checks behind. If Ali has any bluffs he will try to steal the pot on turn, which is why a check from Winter with AA OOP makes the most sense. If check check, then AAs can value bet river or again go for the check call. If he does bet turn, okay fine, but he's repping a very narrow range now, if he has AA then he has to check call river, he cannot jam OOP, only JJ or KK can do that. JJ kinda makes the most sense, based on post flop play because it unblocks AK and would bet tiny on the flop like that, but I don't think it 5 bet min clicks it back pre. So again it's a weird line, because pre he is repping AA or KK. Pretty sick stuff.
