@@amandak.4246 Because he said it was prompted just by getting older, if you have addict genes, it will be harder to get sober and not just happen naturally. You have to go to therapy and rehab, it's not like puberty where it just happens for addicts.
So I was at a street fair. There was a booth with a church group giving out balloon animals, which I had to stop at since my daughter loves balloon animals. While there one of the people tried to proselytize me. He asked "are you sure you are going to Heaven?" I replied "I am sure I am going to Valhalla." He wasn't expecting that. So he said "well if you had a choice wouldn't you want to go to Heaven?" I replied "no, I would rather go to Valhalla." He had no idea how to respond.
Lol. That’s exactly what I do. I never bother arguing for atheism. I profess my faith in Thor instead. 😅
I would like to go to a wonderland of my own early childhood imagining. That's the only "heaven" that has ever appealed to me. No smarmy christian sales pitch could begin to compete with that.

When theists say they were skeptical or atheist it always becomes apparent that they don't know what those words mean.
I feel the same, but I keep those doubts private. After all, I hate it when a Christian tried to tell me I wasn’t a real Christian and that I never truly believed.
If someone claimed they were Christian then described how they praised and worshiped Baphomet- you can tell them they weren't a Christian.
Christians constantly slander and try to redefine words like "atheist" in favor of their rhetorics. It's okay to call them out on it, just have a solid argument to back it up.

But it's EQUALLY true of self-proclaimed """rational skeptics""" like Dillahunty, who uses 100% IDENTICAL logic/evidence to that which Christians rely on (ie Accepting a claim that has ZERO empirical evidence, justified solely by "but it FEEELS true, to me!!"), for his own faith-based, evidence-free belief that "trans-women ARE women".
You can't prioritize the 100% evidence-free assertion of "gender", ahead of real-world, 100% evidence-based sex, and then honestly claim to be """skeptical""", or to value simple, evidence-based truth...
Sadly, it is always possible that someone was skeptical or even an atheist and then for one of many reasons may have returned to the church. They might be sincere or they might be deluding themselves but only they can know. I am reminded of WC Fields who in his last days was seen reading a Bible by a good friend. The friend asked him why he was reading it. Fields replied he was looking for loopholes.
Usually that means "I was raised in Christianity, attending church regularly as a child, being taught the basic tenets of it, and accepting them unquestioningly, but as soon as left home to go to college I wanted to sleep in in Sundays."
From christians I particularly love the idea that you somehow have to be humble to believe that the entire universe was made just for us and that god is obsessed with how you live your life XD

I always thought, if humility is a virtue, shouldn't God be perfectly humble? Weird to take credit for everything and demand worship if you're perfectly humble. Just quietly save everybody and don't even let them know you did it. What a pleasant surprise that would be. Of course, once we got to Heaven it would be all awkward for God and we'd end up playing hide and seek for all eternity, but that sounds a great deal more fun than praising him all day.

The main problem with christianity is the cognitive dissonance in believing in a god that lies, murders, sends good people to eternal torture, when that god tells them that he's actually a good guy and everything is fine. It's for the greater good that there's no hope for most, but only torture!

21:00 when I was a Xn, I once heard that a person heard the gospel an average of seven times before receiving it. At few years later, when I was deconverting, I was in a sales conference, and a speaker said that, on average, a buyer hears about your product seven times before deciding to commit. This became a cog in the wheel of realizing how easily natural phenomena explain the supernatural that I believed. This guy reifies my mental path.

You can understand a lot of the NT from the prospect of sales. You need to drive the hearse up to the back door, in this case hell. I was “saved” at 7. I would have called myself a Christian until I was 22. The entire time, I felt like an impostor. I knew, even at 7, that the only reason I “believed” was the fear of hell. I was always skeptical and critical of all aspects of spirituality and how could you tell if something was the “right kind of” supernatural experience.
I only came out of it when I couldn’t lie to myself anymore about my own identity and that I’d rather be in hell then with a god of hate and lies.
Thank you and the rest of atheist RUclips for helping me break out of it.

He was an atheist, I didn't hear a claim that he was a sceptic or naturalist.
Someone can believe or even simply want to believe in the supernatural without thinking that there are any gods.

So yeah, Taylon wasn't an atheist at that point in his story; he was Christian.
Listening to this preacher's story is fascinating. I think his testimony is a template for Christian evangelical sociology. He clearly grew up in a society where Christianity was the majority religion, went through a period of alcohol use and other "wild" behavior, and made the decision to change his behavior. When he made this decision, he did some "shopping" for solutions and found a place for it in evangelical Christianity. He had friends who introduced him to Christianity (I would suspect that a prospective partner of the opposite sex might have had some influence, though he didn't mention any), and his brain gave the right dopamine hits for him to land in his new cultural niche. The idea that this is a miracle rather than a sociological fact is belied by the fact that such transformations can happen in pretty much any religious framework you might like; in another time or culture he could've been a Muslim, a Mormon, a Hindu, a Catholic, a Buddhist, or so on.

Last I checked Mormons and Catholics were Christians. They may not be the type of Christian that some people think of as being Christian but they believe in Jesus Christ and call themselves Christians.

@LuthAMF We are talking about christians or any theist today not centuries ago. Very few modern theists actually read these critical writings and social/parental pressure is very strong. just look at how most American christians think the founding fathers were christians.
About the Adam and Eve/sin story: When created, they did not have discernment. They were innocent. They could not understand the implications of disobeying the instructions given to them by god.
And if you read the story carefully, god does not kick them out of the garden for disobeying. He banned them because they might eat from the other forbidden tree: the Tree of Life. Making them live forever. God apparently did not want that.
So, not only were they cursed, and all of humanity was cursed as well, but were punished for something that could not have possibly been culpable for.

I had my faith shaken when I was younger, but in college I was still questioning. But one day a friend asked for a ride to his baptism at a sunrise Easter service on the beach in GA. So I agreed and a few of us set out. Me, the questioning Catholic, the friend, a soon to be S. Baptist, my roommate an angry Atheist, and his girlfriend a non-practicing Jew. There's a punchline in there somewhere but years later I haven't found it.
At the beach it was foggy, before sunrise. When the service started the fog sort of surrounded the gathered people. When my friend got dunked in the ocean, the last to do so of that day, the sun crested the horizon and the fog lifted on a beautiful sunrise. I was moved. But looking at the weather report that day that is exactly what should have happened. I'm not saying the pastor planned it to the minute or anything, but it would have happened when it happened regardless of the event that brought me to the beach that day. So yeah, confirmation bias is real.
20 bucks says it was planned to the minute. Not the fog stuff, but the sunrise.

God says in Genesis 3 after they ate from the tree "NOW man has become like us, knowing good from evil". This shows that Adam and Even did NOT know the difference between good and evil before they ate from the tree, so they were quite innocent as they didn't know they were doing something wrong.

@Conon the Binarian ehhh i really wouldn't throw around real life disorders around like that, dissociative identity disorder (as it's called now) is a really serious condition and not a joke or insult.
And even if he did have a mental disorder like that, what would that change? Why would that be a bad thing? That just seems to be "mental illness bad" which isn't great. Not trying to attack or start an argument, just pointing out using mental disorders as insults isn't great.

That feeling during worship, I literally had the same experience at a concert last week that was definitely not a "godly" place. Spiritbox live with the song Constance was the same experience as I had when I was at a church. After that song we proceeded to mosh because while Constance is a beautiful song, it isnt the only song in their catalog 😹

My deconversion began when I got the same feeling watching films, playing video games and visiting museums, and thinking " wait a minute! This isn't church! ... hmmmm 🤔"
I have a goal at my church since being outed as an atheist (my 6y/o asked a question in children's chapel and now most of the congregation knows) and that is to be an example of doing good with no expectation of reward. It is hard to paint all atheists as bad when the one you know and see every week isn't.
To be fair, Episcopalians are a rather accepting and kind bunch, so I don't think I'm fighting too much of an uphill battle.

Not sure why you'd go to a place that will indoctrinate your kid, or at the very least spend time teaching inaccurate ideas to them.
Maybe there is just some community aspect you enjoy, which I've also heard Paul say is no big deal.
@@KalebSDay my husband left the Roman Catholic Church and joined the Episcopal Church, when he and I married I agreed to raise any children we had in his faith, until such a time that they could give a reason why they wished to stop. We also agreed that they would be exposed to other faiths as well.
The community is very nice and is mostly focused on service. Heck, during Easter Service our rector called out folks that cared more about protecting guns than kids. He may be a bit "old timey religion" in his sermons, but boy howdy he doesn't hold back when kids' safety is on the line. The next priority is helping the homeless and food insecure; every week they provide food and clothing to people who are marginalized and never required them to participate in any religious activity. As the older generation passes on, the church is getting more and more accepting.
A wise old lady once told me: You know those feel good feelings you get when attending church?

The YT algorithm at work. Every time I watch Paulogia I get a bunch of suggestions for church/ministry YT channels.
I love how they keep painting atheists as the people into drugs, booze and debauchery. I didn't do that as a Christian and I really haven't changed how I live my life now, sans the time I spent on church activities and home spiritual devotions. When I started down the involuntary path to atheism, I prayed extremely hard for God to give me a sign. To show Himself to me in some way so I could be relieved of this confusion I was experiencing. You'd think God would be the good shepherd and expend some of that endless power to whip up a sign. Leaving the 99 to get the one sheep. But nope. Nothing. Yet another nail in the coffin of scripture.
Same with me. All of it. Just with islam.
I've been watching creationism debunking and atheism videos on RUclips since all the way back when thunderf00t was doing the _Why do people laugh at creationists?_ series. I've always gotten similar videos recommended, which is how I discovered Paulogia and others like Viced Rhino and Sir Sic, but only recently have I been getting videos from actual creationists in my recommendations. Stop it RUclips algorithm! You used to be decent.
It’s all they have. Life long theists telling atheists what they are and how their brains are not functioning. Makes me laugh.
I used to get creationists ads, which I watched from start to finish, hoping that this way they get to pay more to Paulogia and the other debunkers that I got the ads for.
I'm seeing fewer of those. Interesting.
I automatically assume that "I used to be an atheist" is just part of a pitch, not actually true. It imbues the one making that claim with all the smarminess I'd normally associate with used car salesmen or tech support scammers.
"I used to be an atheist" is the new "I used to be addicted to drugs/alcohol/sex" that was the tag line of every 80s and 90s Christian apologist and street preacher.
To be fair to the blobfish: they don't really look like that. They look quite different in the high pressure environment where they live at 1000m depth, and only get that hideous look when they're brought up to the surface and sort of explode.

Personal experience is very odd to me. I was raised Christian, I was baptized at 7, I attended church weekly.
I have never felt anything. I never felt closer to my congregation. I never felt a surge of emotion, no liquid love. I never felt anything. So, when someone says "I felt this deep spiritual experience" all I can say is... "why?"
I don't mean to be rude, but I just... don't understand why you'd want that.

My absolute favourite part about the getting in to heaven discussions is that Jesus was explicitly asked at one point. He said to follow the OT and to give away all your stuff.
Christians do all sorts of contortion to make it so that Jesus is wrong, but also not a liar. It is quite amusing at times seeing how much thought has to go in to this one particular passage so they can still get in to heaven without doing either of the two things that Jesus explicitly said was required.
Jesus also said that all you had to do was feed the hungry, clothe the poor, and visit people in prison. Very few actually do any of that.
@@lil-al The reason I bring up the part where he was specifically asked what to do to get in to heaven is because it really limits the amount of interpretation that you can put on the passage. Jesus was asked a direct question, and gave a direct answer.
He says plenty of other stuff in plenty of other places throughout the gospels, but because Jesus is the one initiating those passages you have a lot more liberty to interpret it.
Heaven is always an interesting conversation to have, the ideas about heaven are never actually filled out in my experience
The topic of heaven tends to be avoided by theists because it falls apart like a house of cards the moment you stop to think about it.
Heaven was a stumbling block. I couldn't see how an eternity spent on just ONE activity: praising God, didn't sound like a Hell all on its own to Christians.
Humans enjoy so much more on Earth; things that would not even be an option in Heaven. No physical pleasures. Not even relationships. I thought often, even as a devout Christian, how boring Heaven sounded.
Add in the fact that my church added this non-scriptural doctrine that said that the strength of your faith on Earth, gave you an extra reward in heaven. Big faith = mansion in heaven. Baby faith = some kind of heavenly shack?
When I wasn't convinced He'd send me to Hell for sinning, I'd imagine the tiniest little house in Heaven for me.
The details always seem vague and/or controversial, from my experiences.
I love when very religious people set out to describe what heaven is like, because it inevitably falls into the pit trap of their own biases and cultural conceptions. It's fascinating.
@@vaiyt Same thing happens when they describe their god(s) demeanor, attitude, and commands. Their description always nicely maps onto their personal social, political, and moral preferences and taboos. Very few people believe in or worship deities that they don't like.

Fortunately I live in Australia, where religion is not taken too seriously. The police finally took him away when I was 13, ending his reign of terror.

Thanks for this. Great as always. I have often found myself dumfounded by the certainty of some believers that they have the correct formula for getting into heaven. The brand of this that I find annoying is when it comes with arrogance but even the humble believers can be very certain. Reading the Bible, I'm astonished anybody can come away with certainty on any topic. It is vague on most points and when it is clear, one can find clear contradictions to that very clarity.
I felt an epiphany the first time I looked through my very first telescope. I love 1960s and 1970s rock music and I had epiphanies when I heard certain songs for the first time. Great films like Ikiru and 2001: A Space Odyssey have given me epiphanies. It can happen at any moment that changes your perspective on life and has nothing to do with supernatural beings.
I actually tried and believed exactly what he said. I went "all in" for god. I was very sincere and built my life around my faith. Years later I lost my faith, and now I'm constantly I was never a true Christian. It's strange how nobody told me at the time. Robin

To say that a human mind cannot produce such a profound experience is to greatly underestimate just how complicated and amazing our minds can be. As an example, similar experiences can be had with a variety of drugs. The drugs interact with chemicals in our brain to produce what many would consider to be a "supernatural" experience. It's not to say that it's not amazing, but it's not really "supernatural". We also have lots of social cues, both obvious and subtle that affect our brains. I'd guess that this is why many near death experiences use stuff we've grown up with culturally. I'd find such stories more convincing if a Christian saw Mohammad or something like that. And no, an atheist seeing "a white light" doesn't convince me at all. The brain does tons of things when it thinks it's dying, along with the aforementioned cultural/social cues.
Still, Paul saying they planned these manipulations (even if not maliciously) is a large reason I distrust religion. I enjoy the peak behind the curtain for sure!
There is a good word we should all know, "Home-blindness", that you do not see things you are used to unless someone point it out, like I have an apartment I lived in a very long time, but slowly over the years the ceiling in the bathroom got stained and I did not see that until a friend had his ADHD/Aspie child over that said "Your bathroom is yucky", even I had other folks over no one had pointed that out, but it was those words that made me understand.
The same goes for the religion you are in, your friends in that religion will say all the good thing you want to hear, but if someone from outside the group say something it can be the truth or something you have to look into, christians that have only christian friends that they hang out with and do other thing than religious things, they do live in a echo chamber.

There is a LOT of narcissistic personality disorder among Christians. To wit: just recently at my church, one of the congregants was openly PRAISIN' JAYSUS because his "routine medical procedure" turned out well. He couldn't stop reminding people that his successful routine medical procedure was all BECAUSE OF JESUS and that, because the congregation was "praying for him", this PROVES the "POWER OF PRAYER!"
So this guy actually believes that Jesus was right there with him in the operating room, making sure that he came out of the procedure OK! It apparently wasn't the doctors, nurses, medical technology ... NOPE! Jesus ....THE GOD OF THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE ....was in that operating room ENSURING a successful outcome!
Meanwhile, about a dozen other people died in that same hospital that week. Their medical procedures didn't turn out OK. I guess Jesus didn't get a crap about them. Or how about all the other people - hundreds or thousands perhaps - dying in hospitals every day? Again, I guess Jesus didn't give a crap about any of them either. Not to mention the tens of thousands dying of disease and hunger all over the planet every single friggin' day! Again, I guess Jesus doesn't give a crap about them either. Let 'em starve!!!

I also find it odd that this man was happy that he was kept OUT of heaven. I wonder sometimes how much people genuinely believe in heaven and how wonderful it supposedly is when they seem to do everything in their power to avoid going there.

Why are Christians sad at funerals if they believe the deceased are experiencing pure excasty with their god and that they will join them soon?

I think the reason why this young man became a viral sensation, is, first off the subject matter, but I think that his good looks and physique certainly helped him in his preaching to the choir. I've pulled the once saved always saved card a few times and always gotten a very unsatisfactory reply. Ok, I grew up a liberal Methodist. Got born again at a church camp as a result of witnessing by a fellow camper who was fundamentalist as they come. I believed. I truly really believed. No one could have believed longer or harder, done more Bible study, prayer, fellowship or witnessing than I did for some 20 years. Eventually, I rejected it. Another long story. Anyway, the Xtian response is, "Well, you must not have REALLY been saved to start with." I find that highly offensive. How does he know the depth of my faith or my sincerity? How dare he say it wasn't really real. If it wasn't real then none of this stuff is real. I did really believe and now I don't. People CAN change their minds.

Well when asked about weather I am going to heaven or hell, I said Stov'ikor. The parson asking me stood silent for a moment and went over to the lady behind me and she said I am with him. I at the time did not know her, but we enjoyed the evening at the beer garden telling jokes and each others company.

I grew up Jehovah's Witness, none of us expected to go to heaven. Those that did were looked at as a bit weird and quirky. Certainly anyone we met at the door who talked about going to heaven was misled and silly. I've noticed more Christians admit that the heaven idea isn't really the reward, the resurrection is and whether that's in heaven or on earth doesn't really matter. More Christians are shedding themselves of an eternal hell too.
