  • Here is a sneak preview of the new - no compromise - vibraphone project from me - Jim McCarthy - at makeamarimba.com . This will be released as a building guide later, but i still have some tweaks to finish off with first, then to write up the guide! For now though it is my new personal instrument and so far I've never played a better one! It's everything I always wanted in a vibraphone. It keeps the simplicity of some of the older design features and the true sound of spinning fan tremelo/vibrato... but seeks to improve some of the basic vibraphone flaws otherwise.
Here are some of the improvements:
    1. the obvious GORGEOUS green gloss finish on the bars!
    2. Extra width for the bottom few notes above even normal extra... and an extra low E just for fun.
    3. Higher damper bar arms that will never contact the rails.
    4. a full 2" wide damper bar - extra rigid, and positioned offset towards the naturals so the slightly more positive contact you get from rotation system dampers on the sharps, is evened out.
    5. 100% all oak frame with extra wide rails and a zero flex design on the pedal rail.
    6. Digital motor with wall wart OR battery operation and remote control. this is mounted wherever you like with velcro so you can treat it as a built on control... or put it elsewhere.. or even have another person control your fans!
    7. Adjustment built into the butterfly position so you can make sure there is never any contact with the resonators.\
    8. Individually tunable resonators.
    9. rubber block isolation for the resonator mounting and felt isolation for the rails.
    10. Matching green paracord suspending the bars.
    11. Wire cable pedal system - noise free and packs up well without a solid pedal arm sticking out at 90% to get bent and break!

Gorgeous! Can you tell me more about the bars? How do you get that stunning look?

+Manuel Enrique Bartholdy Lot's of sanding and polishing by hand firstly! Then I got them anodized by a specialist anodizing company. They would usually use a chemical cleaning process first but this tends to ever so slightly take the gloss off, so I made sure that my bars were polished to a mirror finish and hand cleaned first - then kept them unhandled till they were anodized. The green colour is a dye which they include in the anodizing process. Took a while to research this all and get it done exactly as I wanted - but so worth it!

    Hello!
What do you mean by "Wire cable pedal"?
Just today when I was practicing vibes, I realised that the pedal of the vibraphone is located just so badly. So I came to idea that maybe I could replace the pedal with a cable hi-hat system, so that I could place the pedal where I want and be able to stand more naturally. Unfortunately I didn't have a cable hi-hat stand to take so I couldn't try it out. So googling the idea brought be here. Do you have something similar in mind?

+Tiit Joamets Yes this is exactly what this means! Right now I am simply using a bare cable running direct to a pull attachment on the pedal itself.... a permanent pedal much like a regular vibes.... but it is set up in such a way that there is provision for a cable sheath and the pedal to be anywhere you like. That was part of the thinking of this design. I did in fact have this working in the building stage to make sure it would work.
