The episodes in which you host your sister are some of my absolute favorite. Casey exudes a quiet confidence and is masterfully measured in her words in the most meaningful way. She's thoughtful, endearing, and incredibly compelling. This episode was such a delight, from start to finish. I'm hopeful she'll guest on your podcast more often, required she's comfortable with doing so, of course.
I think, we've become simultaneously overstimulated and under-socialized as a society. As you mentioned, despite technology advancing at the speed of light, psychologically-speaking, we just don't have the capacity to adapt as quickly to the societal "rules of engagement" technologically is constantly requiring of us. Therefore, perhaps, we have gotten into the trend of pathologizing our language as a means of compartmentalizing people, behaviors, preconceptions, etc. I think your sister nailed it when she made note of our limited capacity to socialize the "old fashioned" way. For example, our perspectives of many people often is the product of that person's ability to heavily curate their appearance, various signal(s) of self/identity, and "personality". Thus, this unintentionally places undue pressure and expectations that are really difficult to reproduce in the actual lived world and not through the lens of an app. Essentially, we no longer perceive people in the real world, we are introduced to them through a literal virtual reality, only making for more work to actually get to know people. Now, not only do we have to get to know people, we have to now unlearn our perceptions of who we thought they were, talk about social conflict.
Anywho, as always this was such an incredible episode. Many thanks to your sister for her vulnerability and guesting on your show again! :)

Shannon I’ve loved listening to you in the past, hearing different prospectives and thoughts on life. Your words remind me to be more tolerant and forgiving to myself and others.
Casey you sound so considered and eloquent, with a passion for your work in mental health which is such a breath of fresh air. I love your ethical stand to maintain the best therapy - client relationship, you see this stepped over so much these days which I feel is not the healthiest thing to do. Is nice to see that there are therapists out there with such integrity.

This was a great episode Shannon & Casey! Something Casey said that reallllllly resonated with me was around dating apps and talking to someone on the app for a long time before you actually meet them. I think you're right, you can more quickly gauge who that person really is if you meet them in person, especially before you've had a chance to build them up in your head.
One thing that I've been doing since being catfished, is asking the person if they don't mind doing a little video call with me (i'm more of a caller than a texter anyways) - especially if our schedules are busy and we want to meet but we can't meet in person right away. I know that's maybe a lot to some people, but for me it relieves some of the nerves I have around safety. Most people are willing, and those who aren't screened themselves out for me.

I enjoyed this episode, because I love hearing Casey's perspective. And I can totally understand how she feels with regards to SM and being in her field, because I am a Registered Nurse, and there are SO many NURSE INFLUENCERS now that it makes me feel like I am not doing something right because I'm not. I've been in nursing for almost 20 years now, but I feel weird because I'm not a nurse influencer. And from what I've seen, there are nurses who do the same thing as that therapist she spoke about, where they just get into the field to become a SM star off of that. So many nurse influencers (NOT ALL) don't practice anymore because they literally will work on the floor with patients for like a year or two and then be like, "that's it, I know and have done everything I need to do with this, now I can make a Tik Tok about it and make money that way!" These are definitely strange times we live in today.
Also, you already know, because I said it the first time Casey was on, that I'd love having her as a therapist. She's got such a calming presence, but I know that she would definitely be very good and firm about getting me to identify my blocks and issues, and make sure I take accountability for the things in my life. (I say this as someone who has gone through therapy once and found it quite helpful-I'd still be doing it if it wasn't so EXPENSIVE!)I love you and all your content, but it's definitely got nothing to do with you, because I think Casey is awesome too. I hope the people who seek her help that also know you/know of you are actually doing it from a place of need, not just because she's your sister. Because if people do that then they aren't truly recognizing that a good therapist is hard to find, and they may be taking away from people who actually need her. I know Casey gets anxious being on the show because of her career, so basically I just want her to know that I think she handles the spotlight very well, and has nothing to worry about. She's always insightful and provides thought provoking commentary. Big hugs to you both!

The couple therapists I've had [tried] were obviously "talk therapists". Like Shannon said, I need one who will challenge me, help me work things out, I have lots of people to talk to, and do, and I'm very self-aware, so I need someone who will help guide me out of my overthinking and second-guessing. Not one who placidly validates every feeling or thought I have. Also thinking of seeing a psychiatrist (psychologist?) as I think I may have adhd 😅 In college I trained as a financial counselor and so I observed a lot of counseling sessions behind a camera and mirror. Fun times! And we shared the center with the marriage and family therapists-in-training and they were so friendly and fun to talk to, they were very different than how I imagined a therapist to be.

I don’t know. When I was in therapy it was very important to me that my therapist was gay. I felt like that was the only way they could understand my difficulties. Now i just want them to be good at their job. Which is to help me explore and guide my personal problems. Therapy is mainly listening. And me being able to explore feelings in a safe place. I don’t understand video therapy. Although, it is the new big thing. I need to be able to read the non -verbal as well as verbal. Whole new world. i tried video nursing It was so hard Kinda like s 911 operator you have to listen for whats not being said. I love episodes with your sister.
