    Evercade shipped their handheld during the pandemic. The Evercade VS was announced after the pandemic started and is now shipping. For $100 you get the console, one controller, and eight games. For the "deluxe" bundle you get two controllers and 18 games for $130. It has similar power (it's a low-cost ARM SoC) as the Amico. And ironically, one of the most requested features that supporters (who pre-ordered and crowdfunded) of the Amico asked for was a game pack of the original Intellivision titles. That game pack has not even been announced for the Amico (just a "something we're looking into") but IS already available on the Evercade.

    Back in the 80's our cable company offered an Intellivision console connected to a modem, connected to the cable system. You could download games and play them. The games would change month to month. I never had the service, but it didn't last that long.
    The cable company ended up giving me a bunch of those consoles. I made sure they worked and passed them out to families in this area. They bought their own cartridges. Seeing the Intellivision in this video reminded me of this. I had an Atari back in the seventies with a bunch of games. I lost interest in the early 80's when I got a ViC20 and started writing BASIC software. That is my stroll down memory lane tonight.

    You cover a lot of the many, many reasons this project was doomed from the outside quite thoroughly. The entire idea seems to only ever have existed because Tommy's ego demanded it, of all things seemingly because he was inspired by Mike Kennedy of Coleco Chameleon fame's two failed console projects and decided Tommy the rockstar could make it happen. To add another to your list of problems with his grand vision another big one is that the Amico is utterly off-the-shelf, it has no custom silicon and runs Android games that are developed in Unity, nor do IE have any patents filed. Even if they had tapped a market with the potential for Tommy's _preposterous_ 25,000,000+ units prediction (a number he personally quoted in investment pitches) there was no way they could stop a bigger company knocking an Amico-alike out in a year or so at a lower price with more and better software and licenses and drowning them.

      Hardware development for video games is useless outside of established brands and manufacturers. Software is where the money potentially is. Apple, Google or LG could possibly do something successful with hardware but probably won't. The market is already oversaturated with well known and high quality establishment brands. A new player in the market would essentially have to substantially undercut or practically give away hardware to compete at this point. That $250 price point for a start up with licenced IP is doing it all wrong!

    • @ravagingwolverine
      @ravagingwolverine 2 года назад +2

      It's just a name. Lots of old brands are used in licensing deals now. The amusing part is there was an attempt to resurrect the Colecovision brand and that was an epic scam and failure. Now, they're traveling the same path with the other '80s Atari competitor Intellivision. It's really quite remarkable. And, yeah, the price is a problem. If the price is too close to the Switch or other systems, why wouldn't anyone just get one of those?

  • @XanthinZarda
    @XanthinZarda 2 года назад +3

    All this, and it doesn't even have face buttons.
    Just for a simple matter of opinion: I don't think the Amico deserves anything resembling respect. It's a vortex of suck when you look at the connections and associations. Tommy endorsed Mike Kennedy's Intellivision Gen 2, Phil Adam worked on the Coleco Chamelon, so when you sit back and think about it, it's an Ouroboros of grift and failure.
    Some pointers: The rights to Intellivision were less _sold_ to Tommy & Co as much as he waited for the final founder to die off before he picked at the bones. He was even making deals at the guy's funeral.
    You don't _need_ an operating system to drive a touchscreen, but what they did was basically give you two cellphones with none of the advantages of them. The Amico, unlike the Switch _isn't portable._ And this is a point I feel should slam the brakes for many people. Can't exactly advertise true roof party couch co-op when you have to drag an unsightly footspa around.
    10,000 preorders is a vast overestimation. Realistic estimates based on actual data points and not spoonfed propaganda are somewhere in the range of 5000 and falling. You know, lower numbers than the Tapwave Zodiac or Gizmondo.
    The best that Intellivision had was a reboot of a long dead platformer from the grossout 90s, and a port of Toejam & Earl. Both of those are off the table. All that's left are the worthless party games and remakes of terrible old games you've probably never heard of; the sort of tat that gets bundled into game packs of 12 or so "party" games.
    Fourth delay. Plus, the Intellivision was announced in 2018. They've had a long [expletive] time to get their ducks in [added expletive] order. Don't excuse them via the pandemic lest we forget the Playdate, Evercade, Amiga Mini, Steam Deck, and several more projects of similar cloth.
    Maybe is firmly off the table. You don't take a loan of 100$ per console (in addition to similar bad deals) and then push full steam ahead. The console is dead, long live the console.
    Not just -3.2m$. And remember, that's only YTD up to 2021. We don't actually know how dire their _current_ finances are, and it's going to be like pulling teeth to figure it out, given how cagey they've been over just about everything. But their finance officer has time to try and spit on Mark Hamill, so you know. Can't be that bad.
    The Ouya also had competent PR and marketing. The Amico's PR consisted of the former CEO belittling anyone who didn't see his absurd dream, and the marketing has consisted of greasing the palms of sub-basement channels to proselytize the Amico in a cultlike fashion.
    Now _Amazon's_ problem was more the good ole Google issue: _Throw money at the problem until it stops being a problem. If problem persists, shrug and give up._ It proved that beyond a doubt, that just because a company has billions, doesn't mean they can disrupt the market.
    ...Though the Shield _does_ live on. The Switch was as a known secret, directly based off it.

    I always thought that companies like Intellivision and Atari should have offered these to be incorporated into certain smart TVs or Roku devices. I'd definitely want a TV (or Roku) that had a Microsoft Cloud Gaming app AND something like Intellivision built into it. Intellivision would probably sell more hardware peripherals and games through Samsung, LG, etc. than through an actual piece of console hardware.

  • @ravagingwolverine
    @ravagingwolverine 2 года назад +7

    There's a lot you can say about this Amico mess, and you covered a lot of aspects of it very well in the video. Just looking at the hardware itself, for a system that is/was supposed to be simpler and less expensive than the main consoles -- if it costs anywhere near those, people will get those -- it sure has complicated controller designs. I get that typical game controllers have been fairly expensive in the last few generations, but it seems to me including touch screens will drive up costs. Perhaps that would be a wash since it eliminates many buttons other controllers have. Then of course, you'd have to convince the type of people who'd consider buying this console, with branding from 40 years ago, that touch screens are totally better than buttons. Good luck with that. I think trying to put a modern spin on the old Intellivision controllers was a terrible idea anyway, which is a good indication of bad leadership, but then this was a bad idea overall and it likely won't matter in the end since it's doomed.

    Jokes aside though, I'm really starting to doubt the Amico will even get on the shelf. At least now you can point an Ouya to a third-party server and get new stuff, and genuinely if you can put Windows 10 on a VCS I might consider getting one at a sale price. If you wanna survive long term you gotta invest for the long term, think about tomorrow's tomorrow not yesterday.

    Check out the VCS performance again - for 300 its beating the doors off the Mac Mini I was previously going to upgrade to, at a third the price (and I get to keep a wintel architecture even tho I'm on Linux for using Proton). I'm typing on it right now (Ubuntu rocks - and is essentially being used as my Steam Deck ahead of the Steam Deck - which oddly enough, people are going crazy over. But I'm using it the same way they will (and me, I put a deposit down too) - except I've been doing the same for over a year (and I won't see mine come off the waiting list till at least the end of this year - making it 2 years nearly).
    The only major difference between the VCS and Steam Deck is the cores and channels which are 2X the VCS (but is a very new custom Ryzen imp for the form-factor).
    The Steam Deck also doesn't have exclusives - but who cares. Even Microsoft is getting out of that concept with their multiplatform 'game pass'. Nintendo will always rule the exlusive IP roost anyway (deservedly so).
    Last I checked Amico did NOT get 10k pre-orders. That was just (yet) another lie from Tommy.

    • @LonSeidman
      @LonSeidman  2 года назад +2

      I think what's keeping the VCS afloat is that people are buying it primarily to use as a PC vs. a game console :). It was smart on their part to do that. I think the Steam Deck is attractive for the same reason - I am sure that many will install Windows on it to use Game Pass.

    Never going to buy anything online unless it exists. I don’t understand this idea of buying something before it’s made and hoping that after you pay they will start working. It either exists or it doesn’t. If it exists, and it’s interesting, I’ll buy it.
    If it’s a final hurdle where a comic artist have finished their graphic novel and they just need cash to print it, that’s fine, and there are exceptions, but tech? It’s just too much of a risk. And I see too often people just throw money at these things and get nothing in return.

    Investing in the gaming market is silly. As a consumer, a PC + Epic Game Store gives you weekly free games. Add Amazon Prime and the number of free games is ridiculous. Don't get me started with Game Pass. Where is the potential revenue for a publisher unless you are already a giant? Sure, there is money to be made, but there are sooooo many other markets to explore if you are simply looking to invest. Invest in real estate, commodities, etc. Gaming is a terrible investment, IMO.

    So today, Ouya has a cult following who enjoy challenging themselves with Ouya game jams, but this was only possible with the help of passionate fans. Atari VCS, despite being blatantly meant as a scam, released and while no one ever expects it to ever be successful or even profitable (especially the current CEO), it's become a sort of direct feedback system for Atarigrames to use to communicate with fans and is also just a nice and attractive mini PC for Atari fans nowadays. I think the Nvidia Shield family is the saddest case of all. All of their efforts into making these 3 consoles were stunted with support being cut short every single time, even faster than Sony killed the Vita, with only the TV console being allowed to continue living a second life as just a streaming box. Nvidia also pushes out the WORST final updates for all of them, breaking them in ways that seem almost abusive and then making it difficult for custom ROMs to be made to keep these devices alive and comfortable to use. And then there's the games that their employees and the employees of various game studios worked hard to bring to the Shield console family. You would have to be very lucky to find many that still work properly.

    Mr. Intellivision Keith Robinson.
    He kept Intellivision going for years.
    I also would go online to intellivision website and read about Keith Robinson there was no Facebook or Twitter or anything like that at the time. So from time to time I would go online to Intellivision website to get information about new products from intellivision. I loved that intellivision was going to port games to ps2 and xbox which was cool.
    On June 14.2017 Keith Robinson passed away he was 61. Now I don't think The rest of the intellivision crew did not know what to do?
    If Keith Robinson mr. Intellivision I wonder how he would respond to how Tommy Tallarico and company running the company. I am sure Keith Robinson is turning in his grave and very upset how Tommy running his company and name into the ground and really just ripping the intellivision franchise into a Embarrassing situation of unprofessional businesses matter. They maybe great music writers and music composers and have great games like earthworm jim and spot but really don't know how to run a company.
    They have so much Talent but to run a company that could be a great company if they just did it right which I mean like this. First if I was Tommy Tallarico I would hired someone who knew the business like someone from Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo. Then hired someone to be a CEO who has years of experience in this type of business. Then hire a public relations person to online or go on interviews with RUclips and order to get exposure. Hire accounting and layers and buy computers parts instead of android phone parts
    Then hire designers to design a sleek looking console. And show off your console in real life send it to popular gamers to rate your console and show what's under the hood. Then I would start out small maybe pre-order a hundred then once I start paying off my debts make more pre-orders than do special edition consoles and colors and maybe some kind of graphics on it.
    Will I feel bad for all those people who invested into Intellivision Amico. I feel bad for Keith Robinson intellivision may just go out of business and the name would just disappear for ever. The man's Legacy will just go under and everyone will remember it as a scammer machine and Tommy Tallarico. But no one really remembers Keith Robinson a intellivision programmer who worked for Mattel Electric he brought intellivision and kept it alive from 1980s to 2017 that's a long time.

      Meh, Nintendo really messed up the Wii U’s library. Nintendoland, NSMBU and wii fit weren’t going to sell the system. Mario 3D land came too late. The gamepad use case wasn’t compelling enough as an idea even when done well on the Wii U, and the best games on the system barely use it.

      The Amico situation has been a complete mess from day one that has been flying under the radar, with almost everything that was initially promised turning out to be either mismanaged or an outright false promise. Earthworm Jim is not happening for undisclosed reasons. Some of the games that were claimed to be "exclusive" are not exclusive at all, like Evel Knievel is a mobile game that is available. Some of the brands they were supposed to be working with like MLB never had deals. The physical media turned out to not be real game cartridges. Instead they only have download links. I'm barely scratching the surface. A lot of the details paint Tommy Tallarico in a very bad light.

      They've been constantly delaying the system, and it hasn't even begun production yet. They're struggle just to get the OS running, and the games for it made. Now they're hemorrhaging money, and need to cough up millions of dollars JUST to keep the company alive for a few more months. As if that wasn't bad enough, they would owe $100 for each system sold which means they either sell it at a loss (which they can't afford to at this point), or jack the prices up (which they can't afford to at this point). To say things are a mess is putting it nicely.
