Awesome stuff, thanks. Is there an rss feed for the podcast, or is it RUclips only?
I am currently watching the first season for the very first time and overall I really like it and have agreed with more or less everything you've stated in your review up here.
However, I just wish that they all finally leave this one goddamned planet (am on ep.8 at the moment) and that the following seasons will feature more than just one world or that there'll be also some space-borne episodes.
Also, Posey (the queen of indie films; along with Chloe Sevigny) is great as Dr. Smith; I really hate her and wish her all the worst since she's such a nasty cXXt and that is a bit of a problem. The character is definitely not one-dimensional, but she also isn't fully three-dimensional since she lacks some significant redeeming qualities. As of episode 8 of S1, she's stuck somewhere in the middle.
The worst part of the show is easily the seeming need they have to pile on more danger and tension on situations that are already dangerous. Just ends up straining the suspension of disbelief and seems contrived. It's frustrating because the show has an aesthetic that lends itself to verisimilitude, but the situations really strain that at times.
agreed
Facts
You forgot to mention the best characters: Don West and his lucky chicken!
I had no expectations of this show going in and it a blast to watch. Hopefully the next season holds up just as well
The chicken is my favorite character in this series! It doesn't get the love it deserves.
Honestly! I really like Debbie, she's a symbols of equality. She shows us why we shouldn't discriminate! Whenever any human aboard the Resolute is in trouble, Debbie is there to save the day. She always does her best, despite what the society says about her being a chicken. We all have so much to learn from Debbie!
Episode 1 was good but as soon as the robot got in it went downhill quick, the characters just started acting stupid and it just got worse when " doctor smith" was brought in, it is soooooo clear to anyone with half a brain she is fucked up. There are so many points in season 1 when it is so clear she is lying or trying to be sly and because of the other characters just being stupid she gets away with it. Like here is a example. She steal a flare gun and left a man behind to die, when said guy is back with the cast he talked to her, this is her reasoning. " I was so scared I took out the flare gun and was going shoot but stopped and put it in the wrong bag." This is so clearly a lie, the flare gun comes In a brightly colored box made just for the guns shape and a few rounds. So she somehow by accident put it in her bag just lose so it can shack around? No that doesn't make sense. But the guy just goes along with it and even says sorry in the end of the part.
Blood is tripping but I will admit they do kind of act stupid
While Parker Posey played her character well, to me her screen time was a very annoying distraction from the story of the colonist’s survival story which I was much more invested in. It. Reached a point where I simply fast-forwarded through the Dr. Smith scenes to watch what I was interested in, coming back and watching it later when I got through the colonist’s story. In fact, my sister dropped the series because she was so annoyed with the disruption of the Dr. Smith scenes.
Penny was the most delightful character on the show, and the actor who played her was wonderful. She lit up every scene she was in.
Can’t have said it better. Actually quit watching the show because Dr Smith was so incredibly, frustratingly annoying, and without any payoff for it.
Agreed! I found this new "Smith" to be tedious and boring. I would have preferred an actor in the role that was more dynamic and intense. I think Katee Sackoff would have been a much better choice for instance. And I also do quite like the actress playing Penny. 👍
im in s1 episode 5, if you happen to see this, could you please tell me if she is gonna be "exposed" soon, or removed from the story, hopefully by cruel death... i came to see reviews cause im deciding if im gonna stop watching cause she is so annoying, and i hate to see everyone fall for it. i just cant do that to my self no more.
@@foliofolio She is exposed before the end of season 1. I haven't seen season 2 yet.
@@JohnLRice thank you !
To me it was a chore to watch the full season. No joy at all, but damn it looked good
Personally I can't really say if it "sucked" or not because to be honest even though I watched the entire first season, I had totally forgotten the show even existed until your video reminded me.
Have you ever watched "Dark", a time-travel show on Netflix?
Personally I couldn’t watch this show - some great visuals and in my opinion, some terrible terrible writing. The characters are just terrible decision makers.
Yeah i couldn't get though it either, it's just predictable, boring, repeatative and some plot points just feel forced and dragged out.
I only got about half way through Season 1, and I can only remember fragments from those episodes. Meh.
Thank you! Lets start with the old standby - my ship is damaged! Quick crash into a planet before it floats in space! Then move on to - we accidentally discovered a planet with breathable atmosphere - discovered by taking our helmets off!
Then they find an alien robot.... immediately.
This is followed by one stupid decision after the next to the point that I just tossed in the towel at the first episode.
Have to get into the ship to get something - such a dangerous thing to do in a space suit. How ever will you hold your breath long enough? And get trapped in the ice when it abruptly freezes over again... as ice does .... when the heat from the spaceship that melted it just suddenly dissipates.
I was convinced by then that the writers had flunked grammar school science class and the stupidity wasn't going to slow down..... I had slapped myself in the head so often in 40 minutes that I was afraid of getting a bruise.
Sorry, I couldn't even let kids watch this. They might flunk their 2nd grade science class.
@@avgjoe5969 absolutely- this is the state of sci-if these days. In the 80s-90s there was actual effort and thought. Now it’s brain farts if your lucky.
@Suicide Booth she must be the adopted sister who is supposed to be better than the actual children of the robinsons. Just another shoe horning of woke virtue signal crap
I was wondering if anybody remembered that "Space Family Robinsons, Lost in Space" was a long-running comic-book property.
Yes it’s technically brilliant, slick special effects, but completely lacking in any joy, charm or soul. I don’t want every show I watch to get rebooted into being “dark”, “gritty” with “flawed and dark” characters. Sometimes I just want to watch the odd light-hearted show that brings some fun, with a few larger than life characters thrown in.
Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica & now Lost in Space have all went the same way. Why can’t at least one show still retain that fun factor? I’d like to watch at least one modern sci-fi show that doesn’t try to make me slit my wrists with all it’s depressing “grit” and “realism”.
Actually, I deliberately left my question vague to allow you to answer how you wanted. And yes I have read A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Nights dawn trilogy by Peter f Hamilton is pretty cool as is the polity series by Neal Asher. Charles stross laundry files booms are very entertaining too👍
You said absolutely each and every single word I was thinking
The tons of contrivances necessary to move/make the plot was jarring; especially in regards to Dr Smith's plans....I still have absolutely no idea what her motivations are:
Earth was slowly dying, she could have lived the rest of her life in luxury using her sister's wealth; what was her plan? move to Alpha Centauri, start homesteading, get married and have kids while pretending to be her sister for the rest of her life?
I liked Penny a lot in the early episodes -before she became primarily a teen soap/drama character; Judy was the high achiever, Will was the gifted and she was the underestimated realist who just got things done (like her father).
I think since dr smith was a criminal on earth and hated herself back then she wanted to take her sisters opportunity to move to a new world and live in happiness instead of being homeless and living with the guilt on earth.
I just made it to the end of Season 3 and looked this up. Was sort of craving your summary of why it crashed and burned so badly, but I think you touch on enough of the problems here that I won't make you revisit this.
You can tell it tries to net in the middle of a kid friendly sci fi series and an adult series. It tries to accommodate to both which doesn’t really work in my opinion. Like the life threatening situations they get in don’t seem real as you have a 12 year old kid leading the way in many of them and it almost negates the tension and fear for the characters lives that I am meant to feel. Like they dodge death so many times and don’t die when realistically they should. (Like in season 2 two characters fall off a cliff down a massive waterfall and get off without a scratch) like it just doesn’t make sense. But I guess that’s the issue that comes with trying to make it kid friendly but also accommodate to the adults. You can’t have like sinister gruesome deaths that should come with being lost in space and on unknown alien planets. However, once you to come to this conclusion it’s a reasonably enjoyable show with great visuals. Just remember it is for kids really so I can look past how unrealistic it can be at many points in the series.
Sisco's son became a journalist in Deep Space 9
I loved this season but it did lean a little too heavily on luck. Especially for the villain. I feel like most of her plans came down to her just getting lucky and finding something at the exact moment she needed it.
ICON ROBOT DESIGN!? That Robot was stolen from a clasic science fiction film from the golden age of cinema! STOLEN! To anybody that heard about Robby the Robot from Lost in Space, just go watch Forbidden Planet, it's actually a good movie.
I'm very disappointed in you Mr. Coleman.
The robots both follow a similar style, but the designs themselves are not the same.
I would say Great Movie, way ahead of its time and Ann likes short shorts.
I love the family dynamic, that more than anything is what makes this Lost in Space show great for me. I don’t even care about the plot or anything else, just watching the family play off each other and their brilliant chemistry is enough for me. This cast is wonderful and mesmerizing to watch.
the idea of families going to space together also just really gets me interested. the idea that those who you love and trust go on the same adventure as you and they work together to survive and fix problems
The Ep. with the icehole was painful to watch.
There was an objectionable Eskimo?
Fargin' icehole! Suminabodgin' bastages!
@@trixstermillion2190
You fargin sneaky barstage.
I love this adaptation, but I have enjoyed all versions. Let us hope, going forward, they keep us engaged and rooting for this family. Honestly, I don't know who I liked best. Ooo the pain..Danger, Will Robinso, let us hope, the bumbling big heads don't cut you.
Honestly I did not enjoy the show at all. Bad writing, acting was subpar and the way characters behave was, sometimes, nonsensical.
In the very first episode everyone in the Robinson family treats the dad like utter shit. Why? Because apparently he was in the military and away from home. The wife also wants to take the kids away from the husband. Why? Because he's in the military and away from home.
Their are massive emotional swings from scene to scene which ruins the flow of the show due to lack of consistency.
The budget and creativity was also lacking.
Love this show! The only show me and my son actually binged together. He’s counting down to season 2.
and now i wait for season 3
How's it going with your boy now
I liked it. Start to finish just a fun family adventure in space.
I can't stands smith. I can't watch the show for smith alone.
Toxic Femininity!
Season 2 is actually better so far...
Yeah, as much as I hate Dr.smith, they really redeemed her character and her story became better. Glad they changed her hair too, she looked like a Dr.seuss character first season
I Must be Honest, The Only Character with Personality is the Robot, Even Though He Doesn't have A Personality.
Lost in Space? More like "Trapped in Enclosed Spaces"
Good one bro
A pretty fair assessment for what works and doesn’t work for this latest take. Hoping Season 2 can clean up some of the spilled milk the way I feel S2 of ST: Discovery did. Enjoying the channel.
I never got through the show, i got up to the robot going off the end of the cliff. It just felt predictable and with a lot of forced or boring plot points and the number of issues they have to deal with gets a bit rediculous and some issues seem dragged out for the plot when it doesn't feel like it should be from a character prespective. And a lot of the plot is way to predictable from the start of the episodes, which bugs me, you know no one will die, you know everything will work out, you can see the problem of the week coming (and it normally ends up with me having a tired sigh because how many random things have to happen to risk their lives), so i just don't feel invested at all because it is just to paint by numbers, even the twists i can see coming.
Sorry, but the Dr Smith character was the worst of all of them and the rest were pretty awful to be honest; very often making decisions that nobody, in their situation, would make; just for the sake of generating drama.
I sometimes struggled to work out whether the show writers were aiming for a soap opera set in space or a SciFi show, and settled on a hybrid that didn't work as either. Mind I have managed to watch both seasons through although there were some episodes that I used the "fast-forward" quite a lot on. because, boy did they drag out the "drama" in some.
I agree with you on the production and visuals being very good and they do go someway to overcome the soap opera feeling.
Over all it doesn't suck, but it's not a classic either.
I don't know, it is more dramatic, and more fictional. The way the all survive in all type of danger doesn't always fit into the perfection, but somehow it trigger the obsession of wanting to watch more.
Haha perfect analysis
I discovered your site recently and just started going thru your content
Really impressed with your ‘nuanced’ reviews and analysis
That’s exactly what I’ve been looking to find recently - I’m getting really tired of the negative ‘one note’ reviews all over RUclips
I find your content to be very ‘balanced’ and I appreciate it!
this show is awesome
Yes, it sucked. It was a truly awful piece of cinema. It was so bad it made me nostalgic for the 90's movie.
Jake Sisko was a journalist on DS9.
I hate "Smith"
Even though '98 L in S wasn't All Good At least it Gave Attention to the Original In A Way ?
I personally just have major Nostalgia for the 1998 Lost n Space as my dad got models from that movie
.... and Season 2 indeed goes places. It's better then Season 1.
The biggest problem with this show I believe is that it has to come up with issues. There are constantly issues that the characters had to solve. Tho its even more satisfying when they do solve the issues and problems. There is just not a lot of room
I stopped watching the show after the black hole came along. Now I ain't no physicist but I think it's pretty fucking easy to detect a supermassive black hole that's like next to you god dammit
Short answer. No... No it did not suck
and unlike the first two attempts, this Lost in Space is gonna get a actual conclusion.
I was so ready to drop this series in episode 7, when they got stuck in the tar pit. Thank God Maureen is a genius 😜
I for one, loved it.
Definitely a show I would normally skip. It's too childish and predictable. Science was dismissed in this show. But, esthetics are good and it's alright to watch with my kids. They ask a lot of questions and I have a fun time answering and teaching them.
Canada represent! Grave Encounters is an awesome movie! I haven't listened to your podcast yet, but I do hope you cover it.
Haha yes we do talk Grave Encounters :)
Hmm The Martian while a great movie is a bit flimsy in the old science department. No Star Trek journalist? Jake Sisko?
And Mayweathers ex-girlfriend in ENT
Yeah, great movie: China to the rescue!
@Ganda Gandara I'd like it if Hollywood stopped pandering, and you stopped living.
@Ganda Gandara
You wish, loser. Your mother has two assholes, and you're one of them.
I like the show, although there has been some missteps. For example the first couple of episodes with the plot of Judy being trapped in ice wasn't a good way to start the show (we all know she wasn't going to die, or even be seriously injured.) I rather liked the Penny-in-love story line. A futuristic teenager being trapped in a situation where her choices are very limited has some potential.
Making the robot alien and essentially a war machine was an intriguing choice. One big problem though: it can talk and apparently understands human speech. So why doesn't it say more? I can only hope that in the 2nd series it gets a chance to say more and explain itself.
I loved the new Lost in Space! Can’t wait for season 2
Vendicar Kahn just shut it and leave
Can’t wait for season 3!!!
I resisted watching this as an almost OG LIS viewer (afterschool reruns), but finally binged the series recently. Found it to be a pleasant surprise, although not the equal of say, Stargate SG-1. The third season was hardest to get into. Luckily, only 28 episodes - not even as many as one season of the original - so not terribly hard to get through. And the growth spurt that the Will Robinson actor went through was kind of distracting considering Bill Mumy looked almost the same through his three seasons. But all in all, not bad and orders of magnitude better than the 1998 movie, which was an absolute travesty.
Funny you mention growth spurs, because Penny in the original looked older in the third season.
It was cancelled because it reeked of Feminism. Too bad. We need a good space show to watch.
No it didnt. Watched recently and I LOVE it.
As somebody who is so unfamiliar with Lost in Space, I was introduced to it through Netflix.
It is by far one of my favourite series that Netflix has come out with. While I agree that penny’s storyline isn’t necessarily the most interesting, for my she brings a sense of reliability and ‘relaxation.’ Most of her scenes aren’t as threatening as the things other characters have to go through. Sometimes the things others are facing are just way too much.
Nonetheless, I absolutely love the show and really wish they would come out with a season 4. The end of season 3 felt SO rushed
I stopped watching at the 1st episode. To me the family felt too artificial when they crash land on the mountains. The father asks the youngest kid to swim down into the freezing water to bring something from the ship. He felt like a villain or a step father. He took it very lightly. Their mother felt like she was high with science. She knew the water was going to freeze in 5 hours. She knew that when the sun goes down they are all going to freeze to death unless they climb down the mountain. She also knew there was magnesium burning at distance but spelled it out in riddles. And yet the expression on her face was like she was having an orgasm. When the father is about to collect magnesium with a knife the kid tells him it will blow if you spark BUT ONLY AFTER the father asks if he should be worried about anything. The actors responses and behaviour was totally not in proportion with the amount of risk they were in. And each party knew something critical yet only revealed it after they were asked like is anyone taking this seriously?
Bruh.. It's a Sci-Fi. It's meant to be extra extrodinary & dramatic. Especially the first episode so things can follow on for the storylines.
They are a family who was trained to go into space they specialize in their own things tf
The lost in space TV show netflix did a great job at doing it for the people of today in the way it was put together will surprise you what it can do
For me, this is the best show on Netflix!
Omg, comments like this give me suicidal thoughts.... How can u possibly think that?!
Microage well, since I posted this, I watched Dark. What an absolute masterpiece. The title goes to Dark instead
@@MicroageHD this show is my comfort show
Um... Jake Sisko
The lost in space TV show 1960s was a great TV show that this is a great show to have today to do it again this way after years of not being done to start over again this is it
In the first season plots these so-called writers continually try to put a square peg in a round hole! An example, when robot made a handgun 4 Will. The plot of the series is that , robot is Wills protector, so why the gun!!!
That's a heckuva 3D printer that can whip up combustible ammunition as well... :-)
Season 1 Lost in Space was fantastic!!!
LIS starts in 90s interesting to see how the 60s thought the 90s would be , and strangely enough the film came out thirty years after the show.
Jake Sisko was a journalist of sorts in DS9.
Great special effects but it could have benefited from better writing. Some choices that characters made were just dumb...
Tbh, whilst the Dr. Smith plot is a nice idea, it is not well executed. The writers seem to not be able to let Smith find new ideas or actually show her the consequences of her behaviour that would have taken place if not for some irresponsible and illogical behaviour of the crew. Because of this, Smiths character does not progress and her shit gets old real fast.
Also whilst it falls into the genre of sci-fi, you could easily just put it into fi, because it does not give 2 shits about actual science. Like for example trying to convince the viewer that you would feel cold in space.
As another commentor has pointed out the series also randomly puts pressure on already stressful scences to make them even more suspenseful, even though that pattern makes these originally really gripping moments foresable and thereby boring.
I think generally the series could be way better (speaking from the perspective of the second season) if the episodes were a bit slower but the things that happen well researched and thought out.
Jake Cisco in DS9 became a journalist...
A great sci-fi book author is Becky Chambers. She wrote a trilogy of books called the Wayfarer trilogy which are loosely linked but have great characters.
I watched by accident and had to stop after 3 painful episodes. Is it normal nowadays that the kids have red hair and black skin in the same family - might be the reason the father wanted to go away the whole time, but luckily he chose to stay - whyever. Another thing I didn't get is that the alien robot(s) attacked the settlers, but this one stays completely under the command of the boy. Why was that again?
yay we have been waiting for lost in space and your right the writing needs to grow into the job
blue filters make it look UNATTRACTIVE AND DEPRESSING
Yes.
This is a great show lost in Space TV show extfix it makes it great again and the 50th anniversary blu ray box set makes the all thing great then ever before
I had no idea there were 2 subsequent tv series about the Robinson family in space, I guess that happens when you aren't watching cable/satellite/or streaming services. I thought the movie had promise until I started to read about it.
And as someone who recently completed reading The Foundation series of books I agree that the material would be a rich source for a tv series. But also agree that the writers and the director(s) will be a deciding factor.
Some of the worst writing ever ... " this sand is sharp as diamonds it will cut through the soles of your shoes " but the chicken is doing just fine ... season 1 episode 1 " Dad the temperature is dropping quickly " as the hole in the ice freezes back it begins to rain ???? HOW CAN IT BE THIS BAD !
How can they breath on a planet that is burning magnesium in the environment. Is that sciency
netflix lost in space was really awesome.
Yes it did.
All the characters make me mad in this show except the dad mom and Judy. Will and his sister piss me off
Where's the black girls dad? Or is she adopted? And I don't understand why they felt it necessary to gender swop Dr Smith?
Mayweather’s ex girlfriend was shown to be a journalist in the Humanists two parter in Star Trek Enterprise. But you’re right, Reporters don’t tend to appear in Star Trek (even the books).
Though it may have been the writer of Articles of the Federation (basically the West Wing but in the Palais de la Concorde) who first brought the reporters into the universe.
I really enjoyed season 1 and I'm really looking forward to season 2.
Just FYI there are books based on the 90 lost in space movie. In one of them they visit a plant of robots that are stuck in program loop were they do the same thing over and over again.
I hope that does describe reincarnation.
@@normangaddy No it does not.
Maybe the writing reflects modern day attitudes against 50 year old attitudes, which we ll have to face in a changing world.
Shiw was good but not great. Didn't like none if the kids. For them to be so smart their actions were stupid. Didn't listen to their at all. Parents made stupid decisions as well by not telling the colony about Dr. Smith or the planet is dying. Maureen is not the only smart person there. May watch Season 2. Not sure yet.
Just started this version for the first time. I really hate the characters except for will and Penny
Interesting
Did it suck? Fuck no!
Are you looking forward for the new season of Star Wars The Clone Wars?
I like penny. She's the funny one. And good sister.
thanks for doing these without too many specific spoilers. i have not seen this series yet, and wanted some motivation to start, so i watched the first half of your video which gave me enough info about the characters and production quality to make this worth my while. your video is a great example on how fan edited copyright content, even while critical, can help sell the primary programming on which it's based. keep up the good work.
Great show. Using science in science fiction?! Absurd!
except the sciene is wrong 90% of the time, written by people that only seemed to do a rush wiki search and only read the first paragraph.
honestly its the worst part of the show

I loved this show. My wife and I binged it and were hooked from the begining
It was horrendous. Everyone was unlikable.
I don't get why there is people who want this series to be like the original one, just some dumb nonsense childish sci-fi story, instead of something with actual characters to be related as human beings. For me, those people just failed to grow up.
The show was awesome. Can’t wait for season 2
lololol smh, i like it but its always funny how movies always need to make the people a little dumb to make it exciting. lol when everyone is getting attacked by the monsters no one runs inside the ship for protection. they all hide behind small containers. smh
Never knew it was a re-boot. I thought I'd watch this, and it slowly grows into you. Although the little boys choices sometimes made me angry as a audience, I found the seasons amazing to watch. I binge watched season 1-3 and finished it in a week. The character who played the father reminded me of a young Bruce Willis. And the 2 girls were brilliant. Judy is actually similar age to me in real life. I was shocked that she got away as a 18 year old.
Just felt like a man hate show....Hell yeah loved the lost fleet series, would make an awesome game too. Try the Battle Earth series.
How?
@@DCMarvelMultiverse Been awhile since i watched it....going to watch it again. I just remember that being my first impression. Maybe it was the way the dad was treated, not really sure why i had that impression.
@@normangaddy I thought the show actually portrayed two mature adults finally taking the time to actually say what they feel. The dad is smart in a different way. The marriage is a little realistic compared to many on TV. Will is a genius. And even the mom is not perfect. She is not a Mary Sue and the dad is not a dummy. I think the show is healthy.
