That's kind of neat actually. I'm thinking of buying a laptop but it really does need to run Windows (for work reasons- it has to handle proprietary software). But this build would be a great option for building things for family members. Which this had existed when I was in college!
Been thinking about this which why I found this one. I've been thing about 4 x RPi 4 with a 19" LCD. Yes, sounds large but I have a few other ideas which am not sharing as I want it unique that way. The whole idea general is to make it into a cluster and offload process to the other Pi's. One will be the central processor and the others slaves if you will to the the CP. This way I can run a number of cron jobs in the background to perform a number of tasks. As am very serious about building a more cluster friendly OS. So, allot of that will be periodical OS builds. Also from reports I have heard the RPi 4 has a number of heat issues. So, fans or other cooling will be required.
Hey its great. If you would use a 3d printer and re-design your box and instead of Raspberry Pi use let say Udoo x86 ultra, your laptop would get a bit more expensive but way better than most of the competition in the market. Even Asus Thinker Board with 2 Gb and 1.8GHz would be a great improvement in performance with very small price. Cost effectivness is a ratio of features and performance to the price and in such case your mini laptop should get credit in cost as let say $100 is not much considering its capabilities (such as battery life for example and expandability via arduino GPIO slot) that are not being offered by competitors. Speaker can be added at any time, it cost so little you can install it at any time...
I built one and yeah it can run all the stuff i do in google chrome and it has all the coding stuff i need and the battery is nice cuz its easy to upgrade so if you need an netbook you should build one of these.
Just wondering, would it be possible to add additional processors? I doubt another Pi hooked up there would do any good, but is there any other decent way of getting more processing power?
3:25 but what about using a heck of an old laptop for the case, screen and keyboard Im pretty sure that would decrease the price by a lot (like Idk maybe 1/3 or 1/2?) Im actually thinking of doing exactly to save my old laptop
i thing the laptop is cool i'm make one with a raspbarry pi 3 as well but its going to have a better case then that. even though you case for you laptop is a little out of shape i still think it cool and i hope my comes out that good :)
They will be stronger in the future and all u would really need to do is switch the pie so that I'm eyes it is and there so much bragging right to say u built it own laptop and u can run some kind of windows so it can be quite handy
The cost is the only thing it stops me, lol. For 100$ i can find a very good i5 laptop (second hand). Maybe after college i will afford building a rpi laptop.
but this is best, becouse is a rasberry pi,and when you need a poket video game or other things you can take then back from the laptop and do other things
I had a deadline on this project and I had completely forgotten to allocate space for a speaker. So in order to add one of would have had to start over with the casing.
The new version (that I'm about to release) don't have one either unfortunately now that I think about it. I guess I just don't like making completed laptops
I already have a high performance laptop. That's not why you build such things, it's because it's nice to make your own laptop (at least for me)
Twometer agreed! Something you make by hand will always be worth it
I agree man! I would rather use a laptop I have made over a store bought one!
I put a Raspberry Pi in a raspberry pie and now I'm $145 in the hole
Joshua Petersen Put it in some rice
hahahahah
You should've put it in an apple and called it the Iphone XD (I mean that like "Iphone XD" not like "XD" being a reaction to my own comment.)
Really good comparison and easy to follow. 👍
It would be pretty fun to build and is decent for its size. Keep up the good work!
Exactly!
Build It hey can you make a mini desktop with a orange pi pc?
I'm actually busy making a smart phone using the orange pi, stay tuned!
Build It the raspberry pi is bad. Can you find a better yet more powerful maker board like the board that got a intel atom quad core?
you should 3D print a case for it
He hasn't got an 3d printer
He doesn't have one.
Hand printing is good
You know what would kick ass,
A RaspberryPi Cluster Briefcase Laptop
That's kind of neat actually. I'm thinking of buying a laptop but it really does need to run Windows (for work reasons- it has to handle proprietary software). But this build would be a great option for building things for family members. Which this had existed when I was in college!
I'm planing to puild an ultra thin raspberry pi laptop out of raspberry pi zero. But i havent started yet. It's just a plan.
Go for it, would love to see the final result!
if your thinking of using a PiZero for the build, also consider using a normal rpi3 but removing the ethernet/usb ports to keep it super slim.
RedMage Gaming Is it possible to solder a one-high USB port to the rpi? So that you have at least one USB port
Twometer yea, it will fit in place of one of the two high usbs just fine.
raspi zero is nice but has really low performance. but it is tiny... but a better ultra thin laptop would be every modern smartphone.
You could actually run windows 10 in raspberry pi's. Tiny 10 same as win 10 but consumes 200 mb ram.

You rick rolled me i will have vengeance
Naaaa it's never dead
Short answer, it is definetly not a high end gaming Laptop but for Office work it is perfectly fine
Compare this to a smartphone running a windows Emulator and it's a whole different story. But choose a phone with a Micro USB type B or C-USB adapter.

you inspired me to build one.
Thank u
Im so glad!

You built one!? Please share!
Just wondering, would it be possible to add additional processors? I doubt another Pi hooked up there would do any good, but is there any other decent way of getting more processing power?
To the best of my knowledge the best way to get more power out of the pi is to over clock it, I don't think there is any way to add more processors
May I ask what is happening with the precentage on the battery display? It jumps all around(on your timelapese of the battery)
@Deon Denis The voltage should be stable and not break down. Correct me if I am wrong
All I need to do is just wait for all some of the parts to come for my birthday and then I am good to go
You forgot "looks" category XD XD XD
mean :(
score 'original' :)
That hurt.

Im actually thinking of doing exactly to save my old laptop
If you ever decide to make a version 2 you should integrate the battery percentage to the pi itself and show it in software.
I thought about that in there first version but decided to go with the screen because there was so much left over space on the case
Now for the age old question, can it run doom?
What if you just want a cheap computer that works?
I wouldn't recommend the raspberry Pi laptop then as it requires quite alot of work
I need to create this kind of laptop as programmer and network engineer
i thing the laptop is cool i'm make one with a raspbarry pi 3 as well but its going to have a better case then that. even though you case for you laptop is a little out of shape i still think it cool and i hope my comes out that good :)
Men does the raspberry pi has wifi connection?????
Does the pi laptop do safe shutdowns and if so how?
2 things: Can it play cave story and can it run n64 games. Everything else it seems it can do.
This thing could work as a coding laptop to be paired up with projects that need coding
what about a mor powerfor build with odroid xua
Can an sbc process audio well at all?
Have you tried running Google docs on the pi laptop via wifi? Is that feasible?
Yes it works
They will be stronger in the future and all u would really need to do is switch the pie so that I'm eyes it is and there so much bragging right to say u built it own laptop and u can run some kind of windows so it can be quite handy
Good job
But I think you should use 3D printer for the case
New version with a 3d printed case is being released within the next week
@@BuildItnow Aged like milk.
@@Kromiball :(
@@BuildItnow Sorry.
@@Kromiball I hope you watched the video with the new 3D printed one
It's awesome
If you got flint os, it would be a raspberry p.o. Chromebook
In the US it cost $40 and for me to make it into a laptop it cost about $200
You should build a raspberry pi tablet
The cost is the only thing it stops me, lol. For 100$ i can find a very good i5 laptop (second hand). Maybe after college i will afford building a rpi laptop.
yeah its not the cheapest laptop but you do learn alot from making it and its nice to have the customization option
I will build one myself but I will simply print a case with my 3D-Printer
How does this laptop handle Wine?
Can you compare it to the 300$ pitop you can buy?
i weuld spend a bit more money for a bit of cooling and overclock the pi to get beter performance
Парнишка конечно молодец, только поаккуратней бы собрал свою коробку.
You can build a cheaper and/or better used one.
You could
im goping to build one
how much does the raspberry pi laptop cost?
it costs about $130 to make
i watched this on a raspberry pi
Nicee! That is good!
same
but this is best, becouse is a rasberry pi,and when you need a poket video game or other things you can take then back from the laptop and do other things
Is it good for coding
Surely you could add built in speakers for under £20/dollars.
I had a deadline on this project and I had completely forgotten to allocate space for a speaker. So in order to add one of would have had to start over with the casing.
@@BuildItnow ah fair enough i guess that would be a lot of work

it cant play crysis...BUT CAN IT PLAY MINECRAFT 1.13.2
I'm not too sure about that version but it actually can play Minecraft
Explain to me what this " diy look" Means.
it looks like you forged it with your own hands
@@jackyli1106 yeah.
We can put extranal gpu in Your homamade pi computer?
It would take an extreme amount of knowledge about the pi and GPU. Even with that I'm not sure if it's possible
Build It , i prefer up board 2 :D this is have mPCİe port .
Looks like a cool PC!
Build It , but so expensive for my country
1$ (Dollar) = 3.80₺ (Lira)

Can you make one for me? I paid for it!
If you go for a Pi-Top you can turn it into a communications receiver! www.sdrplay.com/a-self-contained-laptop-sdr-receiver-using-an-rsp1a/
Can't you just add a new processor to the build?
