    First Native Instruments, if you're seeing this, THANK YOU for including Woody Piano Shack in this release. I've purchased other NI products based on Woody's reviews. Second, Woody, can't wait for part two; this looks like a very good price point for a cool controller. Thanks for all the work you put into your videos. Cheer's, Cliff

      Hey Sync. No, I haven't. No budget for new equipment right now. The NI is going to give you all sorts of features in addition to the controller features. Also take a look at the M-Audio Code 61. Not the top of the line keys but they're pretty good and it's got tons of controls! I really enjoy mine.

      @Bladwijzer Sync I'm considering purchasing either Arturia's Keylab Essential 49 or Komplete Kontrol A-49. I'm leaning toward Komplete Kontrol A-49 now after reading and watching reviews about Arturia's 'decent' build quality. How do you like your Komplete Kontrol A-61? What do you think about the build quality and the keys? Would you recommend it?

    Woody...you are an absolute star and I think your demos are excellent..I think I will add this to my I phone as a second board to my FA 08 which I bought on your recommendation.btw, go to the mixer on the fa and choose ch10 and reduce the volume and use that stored as a studio set to get the auto drums correct in your mix! Sorted.. regards.

    I'm very impressed with NI. I have Komplete Ultimate 11, have bought several standalone bits and pieces, and originally discovered them through Traktor Pro and the hardware controller. All quality stuff. The breadth of their complete portfolio is huge, the presets are great, the interfaces are intuitive, pricing is reasonable, and there is always an upgrade path that lets you build upon your investment without feeling like you've been ripped off or abandoned.

    I love the maschine software! It’s much more intuitive than any daw ever and you can do most things on it (depending on the user though). Especially with the Maschine MK3 you can make music without looking at the computer and the A series keyboards are a great extension to it.

      I also love Analog synths the same or more. First i'm making sure that my basic setup is complete and then i'll finish building my analog setup. I currently only have the Korg Monologue, Minilogue, Volca Kick. Next on my analog list is MS-20, Arp Odyssey, three Moog Mother 32's, Korg Prologue, All rest korg volca's because they are fun. And an MPC X to control all of them at once through midi. It has 4 midi out ports, 2 more USB midi out ports that can control Monologue, Minilogue or Prologue, 8 CV out that can control 2 to 4 depending on configuration. And with that i can have full analog set without a laptop in sight and i can create songs with the MPC X and also record into it. I think summer 2019 i will have the set complete and i can shoot a video about it or fly you to my house in Finland to see them :)

    Thanks for the great review Woody! I'm happy to see they didn't skimp on the keybed. This line is now the best playing keyboard for the price and removes most of the features I never used on the S-Series anyway. It's really poised to take over the market.
    The big question is; will the A-Series transport controls be extremely DAW limited like the S-Series?

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  6 лет назад +2

      I see it comes with an editor program, and many DAWs have midi-learn on their functions, would that be good enough? i dunno. I can try with Reaper later.

    • @pointsurrender
      @pointsurrender 6 лет назад +1

      Folks were able to get the S-Series MK1 keyboards to work with any DAW because the transport controls were HUI compatible. However the transport controls on the MK2 are not. So MIDI learn functions are unable to interact with them.
      So it boils down to whether the transport controls on the A-Series are HUI compatible or not. If you can get it working with Reaper that would be an excellent indicator!

    Totally with ya about the current trend of keyboard weight, or the lack of it. These light controllers feel like they slide around on a table or stand. One more minor comment to these controller manufacturers, give us 9 knobs/sliders. With all the B3 emulations on there, you need 9 knobs or sliders to map to the drawbars.
    Even the pro level S series from them only has 8 knobs. Akai also does this with their boards. They are really nice feeling boards, but Akai only does 8 knobs and sliders.

    One should think twice about purchasing a 25-key controller - I know, I bought one. You can do next to nothing with 25 keys, the keys are generally much smaller than on a piano and the' keybed' is astoundingly bad. Do not hope for any good velocity translation, nor quality of any plastic knob.
    IMHO, if you want 25 keys for portability, you should try to use your computer keyboard first. All DAWs have a virtual one.
    Then again, to each his/her own.

    Hi, i'm interested by this keyboard. i usually use much better Keyboard (Motif / Yamaha U1 acoustic piano with Midi Interface) but got a hands (both) accident / Surgery and an hearing accident as well (oversensitive hearing). and can't use anymore a "normal" Keyboard controller (I was a Jazz/Pop/Rock gig Pianist in my past life).
    my issue is the action but as well the noise of the keyboard even on a synth.
    I actually use an iRig Keys 37 Pro, which is fine for my hands.
    You certainly tried an iRig keys ;) so my question : is the action of the A49 more "harder" than the iRig Keys Pro 37 or same or more softer ? that would help me a lot to know if i must give it a try or search something else.
    Example of issue i had with other keyboards :
    - Arturia Essential : Keybed too close to the keys = The black keys were making too much noise when played.
    - iRig Keys I/O : keys were hurting a lot + the unit was making a noise, kind of very soft high pitched noise usually (like bad isolation of something in the keyboard, screen (LCD/LED etc..) also called coilwhine in the computer world.
    - couldn't use a CME Xkeys, the keys were making a high pitched noise when played, and were hurting my ears too much.
    did you noticed any possible high pitched noise from the small screen or any unusual noise from the keyboard or the keys itself ?
    Thank you !
    Thank you !

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  6 лет назад

      i didn't notice the screen buzzing or any noises, and I'm very sensitive to that too. The keys were good for a midi-controller, especially at this price. The length of the keys is a bit shorter than high-end actions, but the action is quiet and it bottoms-out in a nice way. The only issue is that some keys have a slight sharp corner/edge to them which you sometimes feel when moving between large intervals, octaves, tenths etc. In your case might be worth stepping up to the S-series for that "pro fatar action" as NI call it, but I've never one.

    • @DidierMartini
      @DidierMartini 6 лет назад

      Hi, thank you very much, very kind of you !! the issue is that on the S serie, they are a lot of screens, and the possibility that there is a sound issue coming from them is very high (i'm often killed by sound that everybody doesn't even heard (except a dog).
      i can't use smartphone, LCD or LED Flat screen because of that. i still use a CRT monitori lol :( ).
      WOuld love to give it a try, but.... so i don't know.
      the most important thing is to know if the action is very light, so it will not hurt my hands as they can't play piano action or bad synth action some too good synth action anymore (
      Like the motif XS 6/ 7 one :( ).
      Thanks for your reviews and your channel ! it bring a lot of good memories from the past (i had a WS-EX and still use the plugin version all the time (Soft Analog, Screamer Lead and Deep Atmosphere, Toto 6/8, Mr Terminator (from the SR : ) )
      I would love a Midi joystick with CC 16/17.. but i found nowhere such a device.
      only way to play with the vector position feature.

    but i am a little disapointed as of late,i have the full version of contact 5 wich is 400 euros
    now there is a upgrade to kontakt 6,i checked it out,but not a lot has changed altough they ask 100 euros for the upgrade
    the only upgrade i see is you get three new instruments,wich i'm not blown away by,and wavetable in kontakt,thats all
    worth the 100 euros to upgrade,i dont think so
    want a affordable brass library,chack out indiginus's blue street brass,this library DID blew me away
    price,quality,and its playability is wonderful.one question woody,before my reaction becomes too long LOL
    why did'nt you upgrade to win 10 when it was for free,then these drivers would have worked,you will have to upgrade sometime
    developers will not make drivers for old operating systems anymore after a certain time,have a nice weekend woody.

I've been given an old Core 2 Duo-based computer just recently and decided to try the Windows Vista which it originally came with and... well, rough ride to say the least. Completely no support from software developpers - even google doesn't support it anymore.

      I do prefer Windows 7 as well, especially on older devices. Unfortunately HW manufacturers and lack of proper drivers forced me to switch to new Win OS, 8.1 and 10. Too bad I can't use linux, due to some programs lacking the support (mostly math/stat soft). As for mac, one way to work this around is to make your own hackintosh design. A bit of a hassle, but feasible. The only requirement is to use HW 100% compatible with mac OS, so Intel CPU + AMD GPU. I'm pretty sure there are lists and tutorials available.

    Great review! This controller seems great and I'm considering buying it, but I have one concern. I used to own Samson Carbon 61, very cheap, very basic controller but it had four different velocity curves, which was occasionally very relevant. In some virtual instruments, the 'soft' dynamic velocity curves worked horribly, because it was impossible to hit mid to high velocities without pounding on the keys (and even then 127 was out of reach). I've learned that Komplete Kontrol A49 has only one dynamic velocity curve and some users are experiencing issues caused by that. Have you encountered such issues? If so, does Komplete Kontrol software (and/or Maschine Essentials) have a way of affecting the velocity curve of the controller on the software side of things (I think FL Studio has something like that in the options menu for example, but I haven't used the NI software before)?
    Your playing during the review didn't seem affected, but maybe you've encountered this issue later on? I'd hate to buy this controller just to return it because of that flaw. I'd be really grateful if you could confirm that this single dynamic velocity curve works well. Thanks in advance!

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  5 лет назад +1

      hi! i'm pretty heavy handed and have no problems hitting the higher velocities, i find the curve to pretty good, when playing piano you need to be conscious to play softly otherwise you'll trigger the high velocity samples all the time.

    • @Lynx33PL
      @Lynx33PL 5 лет назад

      @@WoodyPianoShack That's actually reassuring because some people were reporting the exact opposite issue when playing with Piano samples. Also, I've noticed that you're still using Komplete Kontrol A49 in your other videos even though you're still on Windows 7 and therefore you can't use all of the added functionality. In case you're thinking of not doing a clean install of Win10 - sometimes the larger updates "break" drivers, I had a Korg Nanokeys (1st version) go completely dead on me. Nothing would do, driver re-install did nothing - the so called class compliancy didn't help me either. I considered this controller to be expired.
      Newer midi controllers should not have this sort of problem - I replaced my nanokeys and M-audio Oxygen mk. 2 (also expired) with an Alesis VI25 which worked right out of the box before I even installed the driver and customizing tool. Win10 does not work well with old midi controllers.

      You can save all your patches to disk with a patch editor, e.g.:
      jdxi-manager.linuxtech.net/
      - then load them back again if you need to.
      I just had a look for a way to do a sysex bulk dump with more generic software, like Bome's SendSX, or MIDI-OX, but didn't find anything promising.
      The JD-XI supports sysex, and that's not doubt how the patch editor saves patches from it, but Roland don't seem to have documented it very well.
      I think I'd go with reading up on what patch editors are available, and seeing if there are any known problems with them. I'd also test it, with a patch or two that you could live without - save it to disk, overwrite that patch with a new one, then try loading it back again.
