  • Back in December 2022, Santa Cruz became the first California municipality to buy and own a full sized electric garbage truck. In March 2023, it was debuted and released on route. When I went back in May of this year, the truck was at the dealership in Oakland undergoing repairs so I was unable to get video. I recently went back up and made it a point to try and film it. Behind the wheel is Santa Cruz’s longest serving garbage man, OG, with Ector helping out. OG says overall he is satisfied with the truck, with the exception of the turning radius, a common complaint on Macks, and the PTO shutting off randomly, as you can see in the video. The dealership can’t seem to pinpoint exactly what is causing the PTO to shut off so it’s just something the crew has to deal with for now.
Out of all the cities in California, Santa Cruz is probably the one that is best suited to go electric. Because they process everything in house, no truck is more than 10 miles away from the MRF/landfill at any point on route, something that most other cities in California can only dream of. This truck has a range of approximately 100 miles, but variables can significantly affect that. For example, on this day, the truck was just over 80% when it left the yard even after charging all night. Even things as little as turning on the heater or AC, charging a phone or plugging in a tablet can cause the range to drop, which means the difference between finishing the first part of the route, making it to landfill, and back to the charging station, or having to break off during the first part of the route and driving to the yard to sit and charge. With most trucks in Santa Cruz doing at least 2 loads, the battery storage just isn’t there yet. Have electric garbage trucks come a long way over the past few years? Most definitely. Do they still have a ways to go? Most definitely as well.
Thanks to OG and Ector for allowing me to record!

I really like this electric rear loader and how it dumps bins

Now this is the one city where I fully support the use of electric vehicles. Could use some slightly quieter backup alarms. It preserves the calm and quiet aspect of a beach town. Granted the sound of a roaring diesel is better in my mind but I do also like some quiet, which is where this truck plays the perfect role for use in the town. Great video per usual!!

Thanks Brady! I'm happy Santa Cruz chose to actually buy an electric truck

Had to jack down my volume for that horrendous backup alarm but otherwise a solid truck lol. I can imagine this truck posing the occasional safety concern if a pedestrian isn't paying attention walking past the front of this truck, since you can barely hear it driving. Good point with SC's close-range operation fitting this implementation of electric power. As usual, unique find!
Congrats on 5K Subscribers as well! Well deserved!

Haha I'm wondering if all backup alarms are that loud but the regular diesel and NG trucks just mask the full sound. You bring up a good point with distracted peds becasue once that PTO goes off, it's basically just background noise. I could foresee a few studies in the coming years about ped safety around electric cars/trucks. Thanks Spencer!

Still not used to that background whine from the electric garbage trucks, sounds so otherworldly lol. I can see electric powered refuse vehicles presenting new mechanical and electrical challenges to the industry hoping those bugs get worked out soon.

I agree with the mechanical and electrical challenges. It's completely different from a diesel or CNG truck which means the mechanics will have to overcome a learning curve, something even the Mack dealership mechanics struggle with. As more and more companies buy them, hopefully the manufactures can learn what works, what doesn't and how to best fix it.
