Lyrics:
It’s a new day in the District
After four years off the rails
Want some checks and some balances
Not the same old rich white males
We can put this place in order
Build a brand new house of cards
Pretty soon it may fall
Ain’t it true, don’t they all?
But old habits die hard
I hope I’m aiming for the truth here
That I’m ready to be wrong
But my mind was designed for a different world
And the tribal urge is strong
When very loss of privilege
Is a swift kick in the ‘nards
It’s been long overdue, I’ll admit that it’s true
But old habits die hard
Old habits die hard
Save us from ourselves
Save us from each other
Save us from the sickness
That sees a threat
And not a sister or a brother
May this go down for the ages
As the lowest that we creep
May the children in their cages
See their mothers in their sleep
May we find some kind of justice
In the tatters and the shards
Every recompense is welcome
But old habits die hard
Old habits die hard

Fantastic song, and the video fits well.
Loved it!
Thank you Scott!
Well done on this song and video, Toad and Scott Christian Sava!.
Thank you!
Brilliant and Beautiful 👏👏👏👏. Thank you Toad ❤️
Terrific video, Toad and Scott Sava!
Those of you who are bent out of shape over Toad’s liberalism may be missing the broader, non-partisan message here. To me, the video perfectly captures the line in the song about building “a brand new house of cards” with full awareness that whatever house we build today will fall (or be torn down) tomorrow. And isn’t that exactly what we humans do, in every generation? We envision an ideal state of affairs. We build monuments and institutions and art and products in service of that vision. And then the next generation comes along, sees all the failures of the past, formulates a whole new vision, and starts building all over again.
Should we stop voting because we know we’ll never achieve perfect leadership and universal justice? Should we cling to the hope that maybe this time will be different? Or should we just keep pushing that boulder up the mountain, content to find meaning in each incremental, temporary gain?
Thanks Allison. Yes. Toad was very clear to keep it neutral and I think it speaks to everyone.
@@ssavaart Speaks to everybody and so many points in time. Looking back 30, 50, 70, 90, 110, etc years ago, the US got some things wrong. The archival footage is poignant and should make us think not just of who we are today.
@@MervisdG Amen.
No. This country was founded as a REPUBLIC, not a democracy. When you put too much power in the hands of the few who rule, you now have a corrupt democracy. It doesn't have to be this way. And just because some people want something new or different doesn't give them the right to force it on those that don't. I was not put on this Earth to push a boulder up a mountain... no one was. And voting for politicians and giving them more power only feeds the machine that is killing this great country.
@@maverick_trail Agreed. Special interest and the uber-wealthy are controlling this country and we need to give the power back to the people.
I love this song.
Been a fan of your music since 91. Love this and I can't believe it'll be 30 years since Fear. Thank you 🙏
I wanna hear Toad ROCK some more like they did back on Coil and, to a lesser extent, Dulcinea. They're not THAT old... WE'RE not THAT old (yet).
They definitely still rock. This is just proof that they're just as versatile as they've always been. Not my favorite Toad song, by a long shot, but gotta give them props for refusing to stick to one genre. The days of artists needing to do that are over I think.
@@the-dave-house-project Coil was EXACTLY that, not sticking to one genre, it's very varied... Starting Now is mostly made of very generic (musically) slow songs... It's disappointing.
Excellent timing for a wonderful video!
Sounds like Glen solo, NOT Toad.
Couldn’t agree more! I like the song but doesn’t feel like a Toad song.
EXACTLY what I thought. And I have always preferred the sum of all parts over his solo work.
Well.... Toad in general has always played with different styles. One of the reasons I've loved their music. :)
I know what you mean, but ultimately I disagree. I think we're all just used to Glen solo, and we've been more or less robbed of the natural progression of Toad's sound. Just because it doesn't contain Todd's signature guitar style doesn't mean it's not Toad-esque. Maybe it's something in the production, or maybe something ineffable, or maybe I'm just fooling myself. But, I would be surprised to hear this song on a Glen solo record. It's definitely Toad, to my ears.
yeah I can agree it does have the flavor of Glen's solo work but that's okay with me because I really enjoy his solo stuff. I like the stuff all of them have put out but when they come together as TTWS is what I love the most.
I do miss hearing Todd sing lead occasionally. I haven't got the new album yet so who knows maybe he'll sing lead on some stuff there.
hehe he said Nards
Brilliant song and video. Once again!
A nice tune for the times! Thanks for the music!
I love the video! This song is beautifully written and the arrangement so perfect. This political landscape we are in has to change. I hope the kids in the cages can see their mothers in their sleep (and soon when they wake up). That line makes me cry every single time. The song made my 79 year old mother cry as she watched with me today-she is super impressed. She’s enjoyed a few Toad concerts back in the 90’s when she accompanied me as a teenager. She was and continues to be the best.
Also, my mom says, “this song is a hit”. Mothers know best. 🧡🧡🧡
It's too bad Obama built those cages and used them on people. I'm glad President Trump stopped that.
Aw. Thank your mom for me. What a great thing to do, taking your teenager to a Toad concert!
@@ShamrockNRoller of course they were built for mass groups of travelers. It was Trump who decided to “get tough” and keep the children in them for months at a time separate from their parents. Now he may have stopped but 545 kids still cannot find their parents thanks to trump’s actions and all Donald has to say about it is “Good.”
@@worldseries1986 ... You do know that since the "transparency" about the border and Biden's "Cages" have stopped... they are 700% over filled. The situation is exponentially worse now. Biden has completely destroyed families on the border and the kids in cages. You better wake up. Trump was doing a FAR better job on the border. Biden and Harris don't give a fuck about those kids and their overcrowding proves it. Go ahead. Prove me wrong.
Sounds like Randy Newman. I like it
Came here to comment this. Song structure, wry lyrics re: socio-political commentary, and use of orchestral support - all Newman standards.
😂 those were my thoughts exactly! Yet Randy gets record deals and Glen has to fund his own stuff 🤷♀️
Love it, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make a new Album.
It's coming out next year!
August 27th... only 26 more days.
Great song! Thanks for this! Let's vote, folks!
Excellent, folks!
love from indonesia!
Excellent! Thanks for posting.
Love it! I've very much enjoyed Glen adding it to his livestreams. In case you didn't know, he's been doing them several times a week with proceeds going to various charities since the pandemic began. If you didn't think Toad was political, you haven't been paying attention lol.
Exactly. They've been pretty political since at least Pale. "Chile" is pretty chilling to listen to now with hindsight.
Great job guys! Greetings from Brazil!
very different musically for Toad but I do love it!
I love me some virtue signaling.
I love it! And very poignant message!!!!
Toad fans for TRUMP!!!!
Sums everything up very nicely, thank you so much ✌☮🎸
Looking forward to it
Brilliant. Toad meets Cole Porter.
Thank you for speaking your voice Glen Phillips 😊😊😊😊😊😊. I’m with you friend 😁
I fuclinh miss toad
Your music, your message, your voice just brightens my day! Greetings from Columbia, South Carolina. I hope you will be back soon!!
Beautiful.
Emocionante ! Adorei !
Love. 🖤
Randy Newman would be proud, Glen
Why isn't the song on the new album btw?
Me encanta!!! Soy un fan de Paraguay 🤩
Love this! I'm an old white guy and I agree, time for some new younger blood to lead
How is Biden new younger blood?
Coily! No springs! #mst3k
Love it!
Yes what they all said!
Now we have another even older rich whit male at the helm ..... hope he can remember where he’s headed
Trump 2020... love you!
Yay more people preaching to us! No wonder your band didn’t get any popular in the 90s....
you mean those 2 platinum albums and another gold?
Lieft wing garbage from Glen? Great tune. Commie lyrics. What a shame. I grew up with Toad. Still love those guys!
Yeah. No shit. I am a bit shocked and disappointed. I love Toad... but c'mon Glen.... You're going to shoot your career down the toilet.
Yes, because clearly their older songs like "Throw It All Away", "Fly From Heaven", and "Silo Lullaby" espouse right wing ideals so strongly.
I think you lost his point... not left or right... there is more out there... we should wake up to that.
Nathan Phillips for king of north Mexico.
“Not the same old rich white males!” 😂😂😂
Great song. Sounds a little like Billy Joel.
Somethings wrong
Really guys, you went rabidly political? What a disappointment from a once-great band.
I’m inspired to go vote for Trump. Thanks
I’m sure this song changed your mind lol.
@@worldseries1986 it did. I’ve had enough with my favorite bands ruining my childhood memories with this liberal bullshit.
@@ClassicAmericana it didn’t change your vote. You clearly already didn’t like liberals
@@worldseries1986 I didn’t even know what a liberal was until 2018. It was rubbed in my face in every direction and it’s cringe. I like America and I think that trump is right to control the borders and have safety
@@ClassicAmericana Control the border? Sure! go ahead and restrict immigration even. Where’s the “beautiful” healthcare? Feeling safe in that regard? The man is not qualified to run an island, much less a powerhouse nation.
You think that an old white millionaire politician that's been in the game for 47 years is something new? He would be the epitome of old habits.
VERY VERY true. He miss-speaks often (very irritating) ...However, the utilitarian approach would be to choose the lesser evil, right?!
Got that right.
"C'mon, man!"
So disappointing. Been a fan since day one and a new political shifting will not change that on old material (I'm independent) but man... this song is just talking points. No depth. No real thought. It sounds like pandering to one side and more of a lecture than a song. Even if I can agree with it by majority! From the middle it's obvious and cringeworthy. From the Right I am sure it's 100X worse. This will rope the Left, though, but where is the depth beyond? Nothing new... Words and message are contradictory as well. ...Save us from the sickness that sees a threat and not a sister or a brother... but labeling specific individuals as needing to go by virtue of their skin color. First Toad song I have disliked. Musically, ignoring the words, it's not even particularly noteworthy. Come on guys... Much respect that you are the artists and this is your art. Merely offering an honest criticism. Looking forward to the next offering with hope :)
Agree with you, icucmeuc. Toad has failed horribly on this song. The lyrics are horrible. The music is horrible, the message is horrible. Complete garbage. I hope Toad isn't going to die this way.
Oh and I just lost ALL respect for the toad ......
If you don't believe that the media and technology is against the conservative person, take a look at the way these comments are ordered. All the liberal ones at the top in the conservative once at the bottom, even though the conservative ones have way more likes.
I noticed that too. They've also been deleting some comments.
@@ShamrockNRoller My comment was deleted/hidden on facebook when I simply mentioned they had stated the wrong day of the week for a livestream. It was incredibly annoying!
You people really have issues if you're willing to build a persecution complex based on silly stuff like this
@@senatorsparky Deleting comments is dire and Orwellian. Someone had a hissy fit, and started deleting comments. It is dire and WRONG.
@@Selena.H. This is well-said.
Thought I was listening to the "Major League" theme at first. The last thing I need right now on my turntable is a political statement slap in the face, no matter which side of the political fence it's coming from. I'll pass on this one.
See, it's a tribute to Randy Newman, who they have often covered over the years. This track doesn't even make a partisan statement. It's a rallying cry for humanity and decency. And LOL at thinking that art is not political first, last and in between. It's why authoritarians ban books and theater and music and paintings that threaten to make the populace thoughtful, reflective and empowered.
@@laredolassoo Stange fruit for thought?
@@wedge71100 I give even less shits when a “fan” complains about an artists political views.
K
Thats the first thing I thought. Had to go listen to the opening song. Had the same classic sound that I had to place!
Love your music, but won’t listen to political crap
15 trumpsters got lost and landed on this vid lol
They can’t get enough of sounding off on how bothered they are by the music they’re choosing to listen to as if anyone cares. Sounds like some snowflakes need a trigger warning
It's just sad to see a band, that was once so good, fall so low they have to stoop to blatant political pandering. No subtlety, no finesse, no artistic wit, just pathetic hatred.
Glenn has lost it, sad old has-been.
@@gunslinger2566 😢
@@gunslinger2566 it's disturbing how tough trump followers claim to be and how brittle their feelings are. What a sad lot.
@@gunslinger2566 Come on guy, it's gonna be ok. Promise. And no, there isn't any hatred in this song. But you should ask yourself why you're so sensitive.
Seriously, I don't want to be alienated from a band I've loved for 30 years, but it's so much easier to tolerate their idiotic political opinions when they keep it below the surface.
You mean when they don't match your own believes? Truly there aren't many bands out there for people with your mindset, must be tough.
@@riskromer9773 No, I mean what I said the way I said it.
Good thing they’re not here to cater to you then. They should make no apologies for making music that expresses who they are and what they care about
@@senatorsparky Oh, but they do cater to me "Roger." I mentioned that in my comment. I know bands and brands love it when johnny-come-lately types try to pretend that the band or brand doesn't need my money just as much as they need yours.
@@TheSurrealGoose Well, the idea would be not to lose any fans (or income) while still being able to express a point-of-view in an artistic medium. Also...if posts are being deleted, time for the band to find themselves a proper Team to guide them. So spineless to hide posts, they do it on facebook as well.
Don't know what happened to this band. Glen has shown support for BLM (a self-proclaimed Marxist group) and the two recent songs released by the band have been washed in political rhetoric. I don't know if Todd and Dean are on board with all this, guessing so since it's a band effort and not a Glen solo effort, but this does more damage to the band as a whole (just look at the comments). Will I stop listening to the old music? No. Will I listen to or buy any new music? No. And to counter the default response, I'm not a Trump republican, I'm a conservative libertarian. Politics is theater and no matter which "side" you take, you lose. The '60s are long gone, no need for hippie political/social statements in music. These guys are all very talented musicians and songwriters, I wish they hadn't "gone there" with these new songs.
I really don't see how you find anything political in Starting Now. If you do you're reaching - far.
@@marcywalsh4290 Go watch the video and figure it out.
@@maverick_trail jfc
I won't fault Glenn for being brainwashed.
@@eljefe8149 Big of ya, but be assured it's not Glen who's brainwashed.
To think, I used to love this band.
Now it's just racist bullshit.
