Well the best way to do it is isn’t just to simply read but to take time to understand. One thing I now always try and do is I pray to God to help me understand what I am reading and to teach me. So when you study, aim to understand the context of what you read, do this by understanding what’s going on and how does it relate to the entire narrative in the Bible and try look for cross references, also try and see how what you’re reading points to Christ and what does it reveal about His character. If you want to go deeper and you can also do research on the cultural context or the original language, a good site to use is BLB (Blue letter Bible)

Try and understand the context in regards to what is going on and the whole narrative in the scripture, asking questions like, how does what you are reading to what you’ve read before and how does it relate to what is going on in the world. If you wanna go deeper you can look at the original language, cultural background, etc. a good site to use for that is Blue letter Bible. Also take time to write notes and most importantly see how the scripture points to God and what it reveals about who He is.
Backsliding is used by people who have put themselves on a scale between law and grace. In other words, they are trying to live a life of obedience and repentance to overcome sin. Therefore, when they feel they're being obedient then they need less Jesus. But, when they fail and fall into sin they need more of Jesus and His grace. This is not the Christian life. There is a separate way of life many don't know exists.
I was wondering if you would take the time to explain this seperate way of living the Christian life you spoke of. It sounds like you have a specific idea of how we are to do this. I started out well the first few years, but then, being immature and young, I fell into the sin confess repent cycle over and over which led to unknowingly going further and further into putting myself back under law....and for so many years my life as a believer in the gospel was all about overcoming my besetting sins. Naturally things only got so much worse and I wrecked my life and did a lot of damage to myself. I would appreciate hearing you explain this " seperate way of life that most Christians don't know exists." ( Paraphrased! Lol) Thank you so much and God bless you 🙏💙
