His Monthly Costs are Way to High for Phone @ $823 per month, that's super too high. And Car per month @ $1,929 way too high, and Housing/Utilities Cost per month @ $3,524 way too high. Plus some Discretionary costs of a whopping $3,076 His cost of living is not property balanced, thus making that $150k annual salary not hit the bank so strongly. All he has to do is reduce these unnecessary high costs. And his $77 usd per month savings would be more like $5,000 USD per month savings.
Glad that he turned his life around and helping others in his community. I pray that he gets on a detailed budget and a good financial advisor immediately.
He actually does have a detailed budget. Most of his monies are going towards growing his business and daily living expenses for his family. Also, a lot of his expenses are tax deductible because he is a business owner.

This is a good point. We’re all doing the best we can with the knowledge we got. Hopefully he gets plugged in to a financial advisor who is culturally competent enough to be relatable (The Budgegnista or Ro$$ Mac where y’all at?!) and help steer him on a path to financial stability and wealth.

Convicted Persons isn't demeaning. Returning citizens just tries to downplay and obscure their past. It's like a thief saying they want to be called a non-notifying borrower.

I thought the same. Proud of this young man but his budget is out of control. I did some quick math based on the numbers he gave he is negative. It can be fixed but he needs help right away. Sell that car, reduce that discretionary spending to $1K, stop paying rent and move into the house he bought and start saving. Get your family secure first and then move on to helping the community.
The fact that this man has a mortgage, purchased his childhood home but has decided to rent and use that home for others instead is more than wholesome and such a selfless act!!! @@daniellemccray7021 Your first property should be a multi unit property to generate income not for living. There are luxury vehicles such as Mercedes that you can write off. That’s why you’ll see business owners with luxury vehicles in the business name.

I am beyond happy at how this man has changed his life. I believe he will do even greater this if he get a financial advisor. It hurt me when I found out he withdrew $1,400 from his 401k for his business but has a $2,000 monthly Mercedes bill.
That $2k car payment is killer. It’s crazy to me that many Americans willingly spend more on car debt than housing expenses. Getting voting rights back to felons is important work.
Yeah, this shocked me. There are many cheaper options in cars. Cars are not assets and depreciate quickly. He'd better off with a regular car and a $300-$400 payment and save the or invest the rest.
I appreciate what he's doing for his community and those who have been put through the criminal justice system. Hopefully he sees these comments and makes a commitment towards improving financial literacy and his family's financial health. $2k monthly on a Benz and taking a 401k loan to pay rent are pretty bad financial decisions.
Financial spending aside, he really is a strong man despite being punished by the legal system, give them a chance to live a life cuz the stigma of having a brand in your name really sucks, instead of pushing convicts away, give them the support they need so they can turn their life around. @@Brucelee89896 contrary to popular perception, most small businesses don’t do that well and usually have only the owner as the employee or a few people at the most. Getting the freedom to control your schedule is the only guaranteed benefit of being an owner
Respect on him turning his life around! Do think it’s unfair that people find it hard to become a productive member of society after they leave prison. Of course there are careers that convicted people cannot do but why make it so hard for people to get a job once they are out? A lot of people who do crimes is money motivated and having a decent job would eliminate this.
I think after a period of a few years it would help if they no longer needed to state that they had a criminal record (obviously not for the most serious crimes).
Guys we also need to give him some grace with how he is spending his money. We are all not perfect and hopefully he can adjust it for next year. But I am so proud of him

I can appreciate his honesty, but in cases like his, it can sometimes take only one huge medical bill or an unexpected disability to destroy you financially. It can be especially more devastating for someone like him because he has a family and several mouths to feed. Time is NOT his friend right now and he should move quickly if wants a better financial future and less risk. I wish the brother all the best, but financing a new 2021 Benz SUV is such a poor financial decision, I can only hope he won’t continue to move like this 🙏🏾

@Johnathan: agreed. There is no such thing as "plenty of time". One of my siblings had a stroke at age 39....that was 2 years ago, and they are still not able to work. Meanwhile, I spent over 50K on home health care for them so that I could free up my time to go back to work after caregiving for them on my own for 5 months while working remotely. Had I not been living frugally/below my means before that, I would not have had the means to take them in. It wasn't easy, trust me, but having good money habits is a hedge against the unexepected.

Yea or he could’ve looked into getting a vehicle that can be used as a tax write off and say he use that to get back and forth to the business and it’s basically them paying you back for the miles it takes to get back and forth, gas and everything i remember someone talking about this. A lot of things can be a tax write off.
@@jaysaiuniverse8628 It could be actually. This tax incentive is for vehicles above 6000 lb. It’s possible that the vehicle weighs that much. But you have to write it off over a couple of years. Over all, his business is still small so personally I would have invested more into the business because it can give higher returns over the same period of time. But also, that Mercedes looks 🔥 so I can’t judge him 😂
Aint nobody trynna drive a camry though especially if you day dreamed all day for years in prison and are making 150k a year. 2k a month is to much but none the less it ain't very inspiring to wake up to a Toyota every morning.
Great attitude, no one would give him an opportunity, so he created one for himself and is now paying it forward. I wish there were more positive people like him in the world!

I am proud of Marquis; he didn't let the rejections he faced as an ex-con put him back in prison. It's so hard for many former convicts to stay out of prison because the U.S. is very unforgiving to those who broke the law. It's like you're serving a 2nd sentence when you come out of prison, the only thing is you're no longer literally behind bars. This is why our country has the highest recidivism rate in the world.

Great to see CNBC spotlighting people that have been formerly incarcerated. I wish Marquis and his family the best! They deserve it! His comments at the end regarding incarcerated individuals needing transitional housing was so spot on and thoughtful. His actions, I'm sure will help many.
This episode of Make It! was truly inspiring. Despite facing obstacles and a lack of opportunities, the individual featured had a remarkable attitude and refused to give up. Instead, he created his own opportunity and now paying it forward. It's a reminder that with a little faith, you can turn your life around at any time. As someone who moved to Orlando when he was 2 and been here 33 years now, proud to see someone do well for themselves out here. It’s difficult to be successful in Orlando, especially now. High costs, lower paying jobs unless you’re a professional (doctor, lawyer.) A lot of hospitality jobs centered around the tourism industry. The minimum wage and wages in general luckily seem to be better than some places, but it’s still not enough. It’s not all Disney World and glitz and glamour out here like they make people believe. Good for him.
Cleaning is a very profitable small business and easy to get into. I salute this him. I started a small residential cleaning biz this yr but really want to get into commercials. This video is perfect timing

My advice to him: Live below your means. Create a budget. Make sure to save money in an interest building account. Research investment opportunities with dividends and invest in something that would add an extra stream of income. His rent amount can turn into a mortgage payment for a four bedroom house. Take a financial literacy course. If he doesn't have time to take the course, is his wife willing to take the course and teach him what she learned and help him to budget their income?

I am a pharmacist working full time and scaled from 0 to 90 units of real estate within 5 years. Currently doing a fix and flip for a mobile home park and doing 2 value add apartment complexes.
$1,800 for an apartment. But housing and utilities are $3,500? After watching the whole thing. I realized that it was also for a house. 2k for a car? Only $77 to savings? $800 for 7 cell lines?
He finds it hard to save because he spends 2k a month on a car payment. In 4 years that car is worth half its value. He needs some personal finance classes.

Yup. Granted financial literacy isn’t taught in school. So unless your family is on top of things; you don’t really learn much which is a shame.

I can appreciate his honesty, but in cases like his, it can sometimes take only one huge medical bill or an unexpected disability to destroy you financially. It can be especially more devastating for someone like him because he has a family and several mouths to feed. Time is NOT his friend right now and he should move quickly if wants a better financial future and less risk. I wish the brother all the best, but financing a new 2021 Benz SUV is such a poor financial decision, I can only hope he won’t continue to move like this 🙏🏾

@Johnathan: agreed. There is no such thing as "plenty of time". One of my siblings had a stroke at age 39....that was 2 years ago, and they are still not able to work. Meanwhile, I spent over 50K on home health care for them so that I could free up my time to go back to work after caregiving for them on my own for 5 months while working remotely. Had I not been living frugally/below my means before that, I would not have had the means to take them in. It wasn't easy, trust me, but having good money habits is a hedge against the unexepected.

I am NOT driving a $2k Leased luxury Car 🚗 and living in an apartment. We live in a House 🏡 and have a mortgage. This is perfect example than Black Families need to teach their children about Financial Literacy instead of just temporary Luxury devalued assets. Great story, Very inspiring! His mission and vision are great. The only issue I see is the $2k / month car payment. It’s not necessary at this point of his career. He should get a Camry or something and invest the rest of the money into his 401k or his business.
Yea or he could’ve looked into getting a vehicle that can be used as a tax write off and say he use that to get back and forth to the business and it’s basically them paying you back for the miles it takes to get back and forth, gas and everything i remember someone talking about this. A lot of things can be a tax write off.
@@jaysaiuniverse8628 It could be actually. This tax incentive is for vehicles above 6000 lb. It’s possible that the vehicle weighs that much. But you have to write it off over a couple of years. Over all, his business is still small so personally I would have invested more into the business because it can give higher returns over the same period of time. But also, that Mercedes looks 🔥 so I can’t judge him 😂

I am proud of Marquis; he didn't let the rejections he faced as an ex-con put him back in prison. It's so hard for many former convicts to stay out of prison because the U.S. is very unforgiving to those who broke the law. It's like you're serving a 2nd sentence when you come out of prison, the only thing is you're no longer literally behind bars. This is why our country has the highest recidivism rate in the world.

As someone who moved to Orlando when he was 2 and been here 33 years now, proud to see someone do well for themselves out here. It’s difficult to be successful in Orlando, especially now. High costs, lower paying jobs unless you’re a professional (doctor, lawyer.) A lot of hospitality jobs centered around the tourism industry. The minimum wage and wages in general luckily seem to be better than some places, but it’s still not enough. It’s not all Disney World and glitz and glamour out here like they make people believe. Good for him.
This brotha has elevated himself tremendously! He does have a lot of financial literacy he needs to learn. Get rid of that car and budget better.
Cleaning is a very profitable small business and easy to get into. I salute this him. I started a small residential cleaning biz this yr but really want to get into commercials.

My advice to him: Live below your means. Create a budget. Make sure to save money in an interest building account. Research investment opportunities with dividends and invest in something that would add an extra stream of income.
His rent amount can turn into a mortgage payment for a four bedroom house. Take a financial literacy course. If he doesn't have time to take the course, is his wife willing to take the course and teach him what she learned and help him to budget their income?
