  • This activity shows that it is possible to use the nature of the physical structure of a substance to predict if it will dissolve in water or not. While this is not guaranteed every time, it gives a fair indication. Crystalline or grainy substances like salt and sugar tend to be water soluble, whereas coarse dry powders like chalk are insoluble.
