I never understood the "hate" for such songs as Crown of Horns. I think Judas Priest are very good with those kinds of songs. Rob Halfords voice really suits it.
@@MetalPersonJ I don't care if it's particularly heavy, and Priest has a fair amount of religious imagery and metaphors throughout the catalog, but this one's a bit too on the surface for my tastes, both lyrically and musically. It sounds more like something off of Halford's Made of Metal, more than a Priest track, imo, which is fine, but I set the bar higher for the main band.
The more I listen to Crown of Horns, the more I love it. Definitely brings me way back to Rob's younger voice and style. Wish he'd use his voice as he did on slow Hero Hero songs.

'Best' song for me thus far, not that I love it or anything but there's some old-school melody traits there while sounding current, it's a weird style frankly at its core it's a pop song in all honesty. Nothing wrong with that, still not too smitten with the other songs released yet either. The 'soulful' Angel of Retribution was the last new JP album I actually own it had real character and warmth to it, I'm not sensing anything like that so far on IS only colder in direct comparison. We shall see, maybe even Firepower's better song-wise after all. Also, positively don't like Sneap productions or rather modern loud productions you can't tell today's producers apart when technology's the same everywhere you go.

Best album since "Hell Bent" is an almost laughable statement. C'mon every studio album since until "Painkiller" not including "Turbo" is a 10/10. The 3 already released songs are good but don't hold a candle to the old classics.
Hell Bent For Leather is a great album and I love 70's era Priest, but after Unleashed In The East, British Steel and Screaming For Vengeance are definitely their best albums and two of the greatest metal albums of all time.
Love everything you do Martin, a fan since RIFF KILLS MAN-And I agree with probably 90% of your assessments reviewing albums and bands. And when I don't I still enjoy your writing and analysis. Your review has me so stoked! I really like Firepower. One of their best albums in decades. The first three singles have me so excited. More on the bone with these songs I guess you can say. Now I know where Richie meant when he said the songs for being a little more progressive. Keep up the good work Martin-the Metal Faithful need you for guidance! 🤘🏼🐸🤘🏼
Can't go wrong with Bob Halligan Jnr/Judas Priest songs Martin - "Take These Chains" and "Some Heads Are Gonna Roll" fit perfectly onto their respective albums. The other song you may have been thinking about is "Twist" on Halford-'Resurrection'; one of my favourite Halford cuts - even the great first line - "Got a grip like steel on wood" could have come from Rob himself!
Definitely piqued my interest even more in this album. Being one to trust Martin's opinion on music. Once, it was opined as the best thing since Hell Bent For Leather. I am totally stoked! Agreed on the period of music by JP, from SWOD through HBFL. A masterclass of music in the pantheon of Metal music.
I personally don't think that it wouldn't be even close possible, they made some really great albums after Killing Machine/Hell bent for Leather, but as long as is a good album for me is enough, I would definitely check it out
I'm sure that the album is great...and you're entitled to your opinion. However putting this above Screaming and Defenders and Painkiller is delusional at best. Sure the production will be better because the technology is better than it was 35-40 years ago. I enjoy 70's Priest but if they stayed like that they wouldn't be a prolific band like they are today. I'm a legacy fan and losing Glenn did something to their sound that they haven't gotten back both in studio and live. I love Richie and think he plays all of KK's parts more than adequate...seeing them live before Glenn succumbed to his illness they still had that twin axe attack and the signature sound was still there even though KK was missing.....it's no longer there live now that Sneap isn't playing Glenn's parts in the song and Faulkner is playing both parts...it's like Andy is rhythm guitar and the sound isn't there.

I waited to listen to the album first before watching this review Martin. It's an incredible album. It ranks VERY high for me. Rob's voice is amazing, Ritchie is blazing, also love hearing some Tipton guitar work 👍👍. The drumming is great too I think. Ian's bass work is even a little adventurous, very cool! Every song clicks, even "Crown of Horns" and I also love "Trial by Fire" and "Giants in the Sky".
I listened to the album twice today. I love it! It's too early for me to rank and some of the classic albums are hard to beat, so we'll see where it lands after, say, ten listens. I'd already rank it above Firepower, which didn't really connect for me the way it did with other people.
I think I’m more psyched for the new Judas Priest album, than I am for the new Bruce Dickinson record! I wouldn't buy it based just off of martins review lol he has the weirdest taste in music. But ive Heard Jimmy kay from the metal voice also say its a great album.
Judas Priest "created" a whole new metal genre - Christian metal. I know it sounds funny but that is exactly what Invincible Shield is in my honest opinion. Crown of Horns? Trial by Fire? Devil in Disguise? As God is my Witness? Definitely not religion related topics, huh? Nowadays way too many people feel like they are under huge pressure of expectations. These people are seeking for kinda reference point in their lives and this album may provide a certain relief. Agree or not. If even Martin Popoff and Jimmy Kay praise this album you can bet it will rock in a massive way. I just preordered 3 copies of this masterpiece.
I agree that music is open to interpretation, but (IMO) Black Sabbath “invented” christian metal with the song After Forever, but ymmv. Christian metal is actually a huge genre with bands like Stryper, Bloodgood, Barren Cross (singer sounds like Bruce Dickinson) X-Sinner, Vengeance etc. However if you have found references to christian mythology then that’s cool. Music is open to interpretation. It pleases me that there are other people who buy physical media (even 3 copies!). You could have interpreted it properly as I believe Rob is a practicing christian? There are a lot of practicing christians in secular bands like Dave Mustaine and Alice Cooper for example. Enjoy the tunes.
Well, it is way too soon for me to proclaim this as anything other than a new Judas Priest album. Or course there are always first impressions and I have mine. There are some things I like and there are certainly some things that I do not care for. Once I absorb this more, I will draw my conclusions. Some are making some very strong claims as to how this album ranks within the Priest catalog. To that I say...cool! If that is what you feel, preach it!! If you object, preach that as well. Personal preferences are hallowed ground in my mind. Nothing anyone says is going to negate or alter my personal thoughts so why challenge them? Much more to come.
I'm guaranteed to get this. I've got every JP album, multiple copies of several. However, I haven't been impressed with these 3 songs. I don't think any would make Firepower. So I hope the rest is better than the tunes I've heard so far.
75 and 80 year old guys still out there playing rock and heavy metal, interesting, I haven't decided if it's cool or crazy, I guess it's not hurting anyone so keep going, you only live once
@@VampireJack10 yep definitely, they say if you're still rocking out past your 20's then you haven't grown up yet, crazy! I mean yeah we should naturally mature about things as we age, as an 80's teen I had my rock posters everywhere and all I talked about was music and certain bands, all that did fade out but i still like jamming out regularly, i just dont act like a kid about it
@@nobrakes3765 Judas Priest. I know Halford has got to be well into his 70's by now. The Stones are 80, Aerosmith are mid 70's. Robert Plant is still performing at 75, etc etc
@@youtoo2233 For sure. It sucks and I have personally been trying hard to find the next younger bands. I didn't mind when the rockers were middle aged but can't get behind the geriatric rock thing where hired guns are doing all the real performance and creativity (here's looking at the Stones).
its ok. my issue with it is there isnt much variation of song. all the songs are dense guitars and rolling drums on pretty much every song. think of a Priest album like Defenders...or any from back in the day.... you had free wheel burning...and then you had Love bites...from there you had heavy duty......3 songs, same album...3 incredibly different song styles. here its just all steady guitars droning all thru every track played pretty much the same way.
I liked the first 2 they released from this album, but Crown of Horns kinda disappointed me. Ok, it bored me and was a little too poppy for my own taste. But not gonna dis the album without hearing the entire thing. I'm hoping it's as good as you say it is. Thanks Martin.

Nowadays Maiden release some kind of rubbish but their fans buy it and do not whine like we do at times. Is Maiden's fanbase more loyal? Who knows? I ll give it a spin or two for sure
Well, the last truly great Iron Maiden album was Piece Of Mind 40 years ago. Since that album it's been the subpar, bloated, samey, type of Metal from those guys, year after year. Last great Judas Priest album was their last one Firepower, Maiden has a lot of making up to do to their loyal fans.
I know I'm gonna disagree with Martin, cuz I already don't like the first 3 as much as any tune on Firepower. I'm really surprised by this review, but I'll be happy if I like it nearly as much as Firepower.
I only heard the 3 video singles which I rate 8/7/6 out of 10. I have to wait for the whole album for a honest review. As a 61 year old and 48 year fan, and Priest are my favo band, I have a problem with their sound since Ritchie joined the band. And Ritchie is the only reason Priest still exist and I like him a lot. But their sound since Redeemer has nothing to do with the Glenn/KK Priest sound. Studio wise as live. Its much to modern and power metal sounding. I like Firepower too (8,5/10) and Redeemer was ok (6,5/10). Also Sneap as the producer is not the problem, because he can "old school metal", see Saxon. We will see and have to wait for the release.
Better than defenders? Nope it might be in the top 8. what is my major criticism is the typical one dimensional sneap Production who makes every band sound the same. New Saxon Sounds exactly like the new priest
Invincible Shield is sounding like it will sound like Redeemer of Souls with better production. Redeemer of Souls songs have plenty of unexpected dynamic, sorta progressive twists and turns!!!! I like Redeemer of Souls songs better than Firepower songs!!!
I miss Analog and Tape compression. Going to listen and enjoy but really miss the old Studer's and tape machines and less digital. The mid to early 1980's were the best times for audio in my humble opinion. Digital age changed the world we all live in now.
Judas Priest having contradicting songs on an album!!? Say it isn't soo. British Steel doesn't have United or Red, White and Blue. Defenders of the Faith doesn't have Shine Your Light
I've been telling everyone that'll listen that this very well could be the best since Painkiller, and a top #5 in general for the band... this just confirms it Totally gonna be up there with Vengeance, Painkiller, Hell Bent, and British Steel (imo)
no matter how bad or how good/great a 'Judas Priest ' album will sound in the 2020s without the majority fretwork & composition by Glenn & KK ; the music/guitars would always be a 'would of / could of ' what they'll play .. an estimation, however superb, will always be an estimation / guess while this will never be the JP we grew up on, i'm very likely to checkout this record and also the tour ;) Ritchie now carry all the weight of both guitarists... it could've been much worst.. good for him career wise~
Not sure I trust this guy. I'm a huge Priest fan. Can find (almost) anything to like about most albums. Love Firepower. But the three tracks I've heard off this so far are just not inspired. He's saying it's better than Hell Bent? Really? Better than British Steel? Better than Screaming? Hmmmmm... suspect. Just sayin.
Well, I don't like Hell Bent as much as Martin. I love 70's and 80's JP. Defenders is my favorite, I'd be shocked beyond words if it touches Defenders.
I don't care for the "Painkiller" sound the band has carried forward since Painkiller. This is the best release of that era but, nothing in this era has the same effect on me as Classic JP. Not a fan of the subject matter on most of this album either. Not going to remain in my rotation.
Hope it's better than the first 3 singles. They were lazy and uninspired. Ritchie's yawnfest tone/half tone/tone riffs underpinned everything on Firepower and that was dull compositionally.
Hell yeah it is man! Firepower may be best metal album of 2018, but this album brutally misses a fast track like The Serpent and the King. Everything is mid-paced on Firepower which is not necessarily a bad thing but the lack of speedy killers and somehow predictable tracklist prevented me from giving this album 9/10 and I gave this album 7,5/10 pts
I wish they wouldn't use computer art. Looks like someone took a fruit pie and just smeared it on the cover. And the T in the logo is totally dumb. I'm old enough to feel like covers and logos matter. Way too much going on. Could have been a cool cover had they used a painting or an old school photo of something (not the band)
They should hire one of these cooler doom band guitarists to replace Glenn. Some doomier songwriting would be cool. Plus for sure the older songs will sound heavier without double bass drums.

@@mushmouth789you could argue Sabbath invented christian metal with the song Black Sabbath.
I really liked Firepower and disliked Redeemer, based off that ,which tracks would I enjoy most on this new CD??
Wow!!Amazing review can't wait till hear this masterpiece
Bob Halligan jr. wrote «The Lodger»?
Who is that old?
As a kid we were all told we'd grow out of it (metal) - I guess the Priest are proving otherwise!
😂
Wow! It must be good then. Thanks for the review! 🎸🔥👊🏻
its ok. my issue with it is there isnt much variation of song. all the songs are dense guitars and rolling drums on pretty much every song. think of a Priest album like Defenders...or any from back in the day.... you had free wheel burning...and then you had Love bites...from there you had heavy duty......3 songs, same album...3 incredibly different song styles. here its just all steady guitars droning all thru every track played pretty much the same way.
Who wrote the music?
90% Ritchie, 10% ideas from Glenn I think. Lyrics Halford.
@@hermannernst8876 40% Richie, 60% Rob and Glenn
than you dont know Priest. Ok I give Rob 10% for melodies and harmonies in the music. Than its 80% Ritchie.
@@hermannernst8876 I think Glenn wrote more than 10%, he has surely building up a big archive of riffs and licks over the last decades.
The songs are great, from what I’ve heard. That said, I think the production is a step backwards. Firepower was produced beautifully
Great review! Thank you 🔥✌️
I hope it has more Panic Attack tempo song and less crown of horns style.
Judging by the snippet hell you re right! More like Panic Attack. Even more than PA
@@davidknichal6629Just heard it. It's sick!
Martin, two massive reviews in one day. This is too much! lol
There HAVE been videoS (plural)
One of their absolute best!!!
Christian metal do all different genres including extreme metal, so I don't know what that meant.
I can't honestly trust the opinion of anyone who dislikes Rock N Roll Over + Screaming For Vengeance.Especially pertaining those 2 bands.
Betcha won't pick 'Cold Lake' by Celtic Frost.
I've been telling everyone that'll listen that this very well could be the best since Painkiller, and a top #5 in general for the band... this just confirms it
Totally gonna be up there with Vengeance, Painkiller, Hell Bent, and British Steel (imo)
Oh come on
Sad Wings, Stained Class and Sin After Sin trump all of those albums.
@@Nic1973KISS Not for me. I like the 78 to 84 era the best
what do you mean "you people"? :)
There ARE a few…(plural)
no matter how bad or how good/great a 'Judas Priest ' album will sound in the 2020s without the majority fretwork & composition by Glenn & KK ; the music/guitars would always be a 'would of / could of ' what they'll play .. an estimation, however superb, will always be an estimation / guess
while this will never be the JP we grew up on, i'm very likely to checkout this record and also the tour ;)
Ritchie now carry all the weight of both guitarists... it could've been much worst.. good for him career wise~
You mean Killing Machine
It is so extremely powerful!
Best since Hell Bent? Beyond a stretch. Still good material.
The best record since Hell Bent is high praise indeed. I have to check it out.
Hmmmmm... suspect. Just sayin.
To him it is, to you it's not. Can't be any more simple than that.
Crown of Horns is a great song.
Well, I don't like Hell Bent as much as Martin.
I love 70's and 80's JP. Defenders is my favorite, I'd be shocked beyond words if it touches Defenders.
Are u nuts the title track blows the serpent and the king out of the water
I don't care for the "Painkiller" sound the band has carried forward since Painkiller. This is the best release of that era but, nothing in this era has the same effect on me as Classic JP. Not a fan of the subject matter on most of this album either. Not going to remain in my rotation.
looks good !!!
Not the double bass drum. . .rapid fire. . .machine gun. . .the double bass noisy crap.
“Favorite album since Hell Bent For Leather.” Holy shit. That is a massive statement, especially coming from Martin.
I'll take the new KK over this mess any day
Oh we luv so much edgy drama queenies 😅
Lol Teddy 😅🤣
Jayne disapproves of this message. JP fans are loyal, all 4000 of them.
Hope it's better than the first 3 singles. They were lazy and uninspired. Ritchie's yawnfest tone/half tone/tone riffs underpinned everything on Firepower and that was dull compositionally.
JUDAS PRIEST..................................................... RULES
If it's better than Firepower, man...
Can't wait to hear it;
Track by track review is boring unless you heard the album.
I wiped off a tear
It’s good for 2024, not their top 10 however
Judas Priest is DEAD. Heavy Metal is DEAD. Our society is DEAD. Western word is dying. Sad but true.
Lets hope your not abused and branded a liar😄
Clickbait. This is not an album review.
