How to Build an Off Grid Cabin at the Top of a Mountain (Cabin Tour)

- Designer Robbie Walker builds an off grid cabin in the form of Mansfield House. Robbie Walker has designed a home for his family that is both considered and sustainable. The house is situated on a rocky terrain, perched atop a natural flat plane. It was important that the long rectangular structure - which was crafted using raw steel, concrete, plywood and glass - blended in with its surrounding natural environment.
Inspired to connect with the views of the landscape beyond, Mansfield House is half bunker, half glass box. As a designer building an off grid cabin, Robbie had to ensure that the home was durable, with the ability to utilise solar energy and withstand the surrounding climatic conditions. The entrance courtyard and garage both face west where the weather hits the home the hardest, whilst the home itself is encased with a modern interpretation of a traditional Australian verandah. Screens along the home can be adjusted to suit different needs - heating or cooling - simultaneously blending into the environment, providing shelter from the wind and consuming as much solar heat gain as possible.
To champion sustainability and deepen relationships with the environment, and as a designer building an off grid cabin, Robbie has produced a home of lasting resonance - strong yet delicate, poised yet prepared. The architecture was designed around minimal wastage of materials, seen in the concrete blocks and plywood used sustainably throughout the interior. The materiality of the house is rugged, tough and long lasting, feeding into its natural landscape.
As a designer building an off grid cabin, Robbie understood that the isolated conditions of the site meant that the thermal mass needed to play a large role within the home’s design, needing the ability to store heat or cool the interior with ease. The home is simple in its execution, with every element on show - from the structure all the way down to the pipe work. Inspired by a need to build things that last, designer Robbie Walker builds an off grid cabin, strong enough and powerful enough to endure.

This is what happens when a production is audiovisually in tune; music, visuals and emotions in a collaborative dance. Inspiring.
I think they need more eurobeats that drown the vocal with more aggressive cuts so it's "more dynamic" for more sex appeal XD.
Tell me you're the best architecture channel on RUclips without telling me you're the best architecture channel on RUclips 🙌

This man's design esthetic is next level.
I love everything about this. The design. The isolation. The simple ness. The man hosting. Well done!
ruclips.net/video/v2FaiT-JufY/видео.html
Me too!
i like the brass pipes
DITTO, I agree! I'll add: his philosophy, too.
Simplicity makes homes more comfortable sometimes.
It’s an interesting study when he noted today’s things aren’t built to last. Yet, we call it progress. Gentleman like this hold the balance, and perhaps will one day tip the scale. Well done.
I agree. Well done indeed.

I still think about how precise the Giza pyramids were build & the fact it's alligned with the constellations tells you they've had advanced astronomical knowledge & other worldly technology
@@blznft9513 So true. I had a quick visit to them 25yrs ago. I remember stepping off the coach & just standing there in awe. After about 10 mins my wife came over and joked “You can shut your mouth now”.
The Flak Towers in Germany were built to last, the Russian Army blasted the tower with there biggest Howitzer's for hours and decided to give up as they were not getting any where or doing any damage. They will outlast the Pyramids.
This house has to be the ultimate in minimalism.
This is probably my favorite one from this channel
I really appreciate the thought process of this home, so well thought out and reflects not only nature, but the calmness of the owner. Another comment spoke to balance, absolutely present here and a model for others to condor moving forward. Beautiful home, built to last.
I love your videos. Some houses speak to me; others don’t. Sometimes the Architect-speak is a bit self-indulgent, but I always look forward to watching and listening. This guy impressed me by the amount of thought that went into many of the design decisions. Thoroughly absorbing video and wonderful house
The people that conceive, create on paper then manage the actual construction of a home like this, are heroes to me.
The shipping container is on Airbnb. Can highly recommend. Robbie even invited me in to see his house but I ran out of time. Glad I got to see it here!
Haha guys like these cause in me this inescapable feeling/thought …”what are you doing with your life?”
Bravo!
what a superb spot for a house. I'm not jealous at all. Not in the slightest.
the cinematic, his voice, the background music, this video overall is very calming.
The build quality appears to be very strong, but also has that delicateness to it that makes it approachable. Thoughtful plumbing and use of water. Love everything about this home!

Smart design in every detail is quite readable in this house
I think the plumbing is my challenge i prefer seal conduit pipping nevertherless it's a wonderful project
The quality of these videos still amazes me
This not just a house this is a dream. I absolutely love that calmness, air and the clarity of all lines. Nothing occasional, everything thought through.
hands down this is the best house on this channel bro
the idea behind this house is so pure thats what makes this so unique

I had to watch it twice to really soak in the beauty. Saving it because I want to build something similar in Puerto Rico.
I'm crying, it's so beautiful
This literally looks like my dream house!
Well designed project, congratulations! and for once an architect that talks to the point, without using every 5 seconds architectural buzz words. Love your style mister Walker
I agree with you. I was able to absorb and appreciate more.
That was really noticeable. Thoughtful guy. Sounds like an expert but not a wanker
Best part being he isn’t an architect!
@@steveh3339 but he is
@@steveh3339 Isn't he, though?
such a genuine genius of a person
WoW one of the best that I ever saw. congratulations to the owner.
That house is an utter dream. Tremendous
Like the simplicity, basic design, durability and practicality.... there is so much beauty in the simple...
After so many luxe designs it’s lovely to see something thoughtful. I often think we’ll start to look at environmentally friendly homes in a different way where we will use traditional materials but more thoughtfully to produce less waste and to create buildings that last!
The towel rail has me foaming at the mouth. So cool
The build quality appears to be very strong, but also has that Delicatessens to it that makes it approachable. Thoughtful plumbing and use of water. Lave everything about this home !
Elegance, simplicity, nature, beauty, integrity and reality.
It’s so amazing about all the views around this block
Breathtaking views!
It’s really special when architects think about how a home will age and fit into the natural landscape. It takes great consideration to think about building a home that will only fit more and more into the earth on which it will be placed. The rest shown to the natural landscape is inspiring.
Jaw dropping. Incredible. To live there, to be there. Makes perfect sense. Everything is so thought through and considered. A house for generations to savour and appreciate. Thank you.

At first I thought “what a simple house. it feels very cold.” But, as he explained every aspect of building it and the thought that went into the design, my perspective started to change. At the end when he said “it’s only going to get better” I thought, “Wow. Now, that’s a home.” Well done!
it's really unsuspecting till you see how it all comes together
Absolutely a gem of a project..
Love this house for it’s rawness and functionality. Fantastic design in an amazingly setting. 😊
This is the kind of hause I hope to have in the future
I find the only materialistic thing I aspire to in my life has always been an amazing space like to call home one day, these videos always remind me of that goal. Another amazing video, The Local Project
Mr Walker's voice is calming, much like the environment he and his home are surrounded by. I am sure, given the chance to have a home like this someday, I'd be able to get in touch with my creative side more and capture more dark sky images without the risk of light pollution. What a perfect place to unwind and focus, and practice sustainability as well.

I'm in awe of this house.
For the first time in long time, I am trully in love with the project, the idea and his philosophy behind it all.
Hello Natalia
Truly and simply beautiful.
I lived in a desert for 15 years and his approach to this amazing project resonated with me. I love the simplicity and elegance. Well done.
Yeah this looks a lot better than living in sand
This house makes sense. Helluva design.
Got goosebumps watching that, it's spectacular
Wow! I’m in love with this house! My dream home simple yet very elegant! 🥰🥰🥰
the concrete and metal combines together for this quiet, gattica feel
One of the best house I've ever seen! Beautifully done!!
What absolute cool human being
This is sensible, simple, and beautiful.
A rare combination. Excellent. Thank you.
Beautiful just Beautiful. Wow I love it. You are very blessed.
I'm in awe of this house. All the design features are thoughtful and efficiently engineered. My lordy.....it's stunning. The friggin' towel rack....how simple and clever is that! The sheet metal work, especially round the fireplace, is exquisite.....and the angles in the west-facing metal screens allowing the view but blocking the harsh western sun. Congratulations and thank you Robbie. The Local Project are the best home design presenters out there.

This house has really inspired me. It is my dream to build something with similar materials to last for generations in the English Yorkshire countryside. Thank you.
Im quite speechless. The beauty not only lies in the eyes of the beholder. But also in the utility of the design. This is stunning.
My favourite so far. I love everything about it.
I love it, how the plant was distributed, the place, the materials, except the walls, I never liked the raw gray block, but the house is still amazing.
Very Beautiful house and well designed. This reminds me of when we built a modern designed house on top of a hill in WY several years ago. Similar to his situation, he said the property was cheaper than lower lots....well, there's a reason for that, and I found out why that is. I learned that living on top of a hill can be downright mortifying with strong weather systems that will attack a completely exposed structure. We encountered 55-75 mph wind storms that would last 16-20 hours. With the unrelenting force of the wind, It sounded like a freight train was inches away from the windows.
We strategically placed the structure on the hill so that the winds wouldn't hit the house directly broadside. Regardless, through many storms, we were sure our house would be blown apart. Luckily, our builder did a fantastic job and the house remained solidly affixed and we never experienced any damage from weather (still can't believe that). As beautiful as the views and sunsets were, I would never consider building on a hill again. Though, I must say, we never had a bug problem up there.😉
A well engineered home, equally elegant and charming.I like the character and personality of the man the most. Hope his kids and grandkids cherish and have a great time in his home!

Absolutely awesome what a place God bless you
St Andrews Beach House and Mansfield House are my top two favorites,
I'm with the previous comment...love absolutely everything about this. wow!
Great, and i like his approach/ principles
My god. His furniture is SO GOOD
The way this video is artistically produced does justice the the architectural design of the house.
Stunning production value.
Beautiful, marvelous use of materials, elegant, so well thought of, solid and delicate, landscape respectful .... GREAT GREAT thanks for open it to the public
Top 5 favorite. What a view and the style is perfect.
What a powerful property in the middle of that landscape...would be great to check back in on this place in 10 years or so and see how the landscaping and patina has immersed even further into the surrounds.
My favorite house. Simple. Well thought out in terms of design, materials and habitation. Really impressed with the owner/designer from the concept to the execution. Well done.
I think I have watched this video four or five times. Simplicity and yet such a unique space. The plywood walls are such a cool look.
4:12 The way the door handle slots into the brick blew my fricken mind!
Speechless. Absolutely stunning.
I love that its built to last and it captures the landscape so beautifully
It's beautiful and peaceful looking!
Beautiful and loving for humans and the earth.
This is my favorite of this series. Love love love it.
I like the idea of such a location
Now i want that house ! nothing better than a house on an altitude
"...and I'm hoping... it'll soon look like we haven't been here" was such an impactful thing to say. You can tell that this man has such an intense respect and love for his surroundings, not only the house, but also the world and nature around it. What a beautiful, beautiful home. Bravo!
With a current renovation happening on our house, I am constantly horrified at the amount of building waste! Love that you have designed things to minimise all that waste - Australian building practices need to really step up the game to improve on this. Love the house, love the landscape!!
It is simple but very well thought out.
beautiful building sitting in an amazing location, i love the simplicity of the spaces
Us too!
Yes, this house will only get better with time like wine.
This is truly truly stunning!the wide shot of him and his daughter in the foreground and the gorgeous sunset in the background nearly bought tears to my eyes!truly a dream
I am in love with the use of Plywood it is sucha beautiful material! - & the towel rail was ingenious
we couldn't agree more 🙌
The production quality along with Walker's narration is absolutely inspirational for what an architectural review video should be
😇
This is absolutely one of the most honest expression of simplicity I’ve seen, yet packed with creativity and craftsmanship and packed full of the warmth of texture..A design classic in the making..
wow, i love the idea to use the pipes as a heater for the towel. genius!
Wow …. No words .. amazing use of knowledge to build off grid and be fully sustainable.🎓
I love the thorough effort to reduce material waste and to create a timeless and lasting structure.
I wonder though, with all of the hard surfaces and glass, if there is too much reflective sound inside.
It is catchbreathing incredible project! Most of all!
Great video ! I can feel a lot from it, about architecture, english, video motion, music. Well done ! - From Vietnamese
Built to last, for generations to come....a truly amazing design and well executed construction. Simply brilliant!
Very beautiful. Very powerful.
One of the best I’ve ever seen… this man is a savant
One day, maybe one day I will live in a house like this. And when that moment comes I will be the happiest person alive
Simple,yet Stunning..
Fantastic. Sensitive and simple design executed economically, resulting in a proportionally peaceful home.
Really well done. Just the type of home I would love to live in. Peace, quiet and a great view.....
Congratulations on this build... inspiring.
