I have seen cases with the "VMW" washers, where the plastic input gear going into the transmission has worn out teeth. This hinders the splutch gear from sliding up and down freely. The actuator struggles trying to shift the splutch out of spin mode into agitate mode.
Not certain, but I bet your "Agitator Dogs" are broken. They grab the power spindle to make the agitator turn. I had to replace several on my 25 year old Kenmore last year. You have to pull the agitator off to check them. Agitator dogs are centrifugally operated. Look them up online or refer to your service manual. They are plastic and prone to wear & tear. You could try finding the manual online as well by entering your model number in search.
I know what you are talking about, my GE Profile from 2006 had that happen around 2014 and it had to be replaced. But this noise I am getting on the Maytag is from the Actuator not engaging the Splung Clutch. Those parts have been replaced twice, a long with the motor and belt. The tech said for me to call Whirlpool about the issue and heard back yesterday, they are going to do a full replacement with the newer MVWP587GW model that would also have a new 5 year warranty.

@@MasonBowen-gv9cy the repair tech replaced it twice and still doing it. So I contacted Whirlpool and they approved a replacement. Yesterday it was replaced with the MVWP686GW model.
