Man, this brought back memories. I used an ADA MP-1 when they came out circa. 1990 and still have it in one of my old refrigerator racks. I have no complaints and loved the crunch and sparkling cleans. Great compresser in it as well. Ran it through the Rane SM26 mixers with multi effects processors, Sonic Maximizers, eqs, Hushes, Korg tuner and VHT stereo power amps. I loved the midi platform. I later opted for a second monster rack with top shelf processors and soldano X88R preamp / VHT tone. All that shit has been sitting in my garage for the past 20 plus years along with all my cases of orange and Marshall full stacks, Marshall, Peavey, Soldano, Mesa Boogie and Fender heads. Not to mention the 50+ pedals I somehow "collected". I just can't bring myself to sell any of it. I need to inventory all that crap someday. It's hard to believe my main amp is now a Fender 5E3. In my cover band, I use a Marshall DSL40 combo with a minimal pedal board. Fuzz, Wah, Tuner, Tschula in front of the amp and two pedals in EFX loop; a delay and reverb pedal that also has and can switch between rotory / Chorus / and univibe with the reverb. Crazy ... Deuces .. ✌️
Takes me back to my early 90s high school daze! Had a friend who owned a MP-1 and ran it through the Return jack of a 2 channel JCM 800 half stack! He paired it with a Jackson Soloist. Really mean but well defined distortions for the period.
The MP1 is a tone benchmark ... designed by Todd Langner (RIP) who also modified amps in the San Fransisco Bay Area. The pre-eq was a must along with the Rocktron Hush II for the noise, and the BBE for the oomph, especially when using a transistor slave amp like the Carvin FET 900. The clean channel with the compressor and the stereo chorus could do both Roland JC120 and Rockman tones. Great video Euge!!
Euge, just caught this excellent video! Brings back memories. 🙌🏼 Lots of players used a rack-mount BBE Sonic Maximizer with the ADA MP-1. The BBE Lo Contour for low-end thump and the process control for crisp / percussive highs. Thanks for making awesome / entertaining videos.
Correct The MP-1 with a BBE 462 and a HUSH Super C is the classic 80s rack and thats what I have in my old rig. I run it though a Rocktron SS power amp or a Marshall Jubilee or the Boss Katana head. Always sounds great for an 80s metal workout. My MP-1 also has the Marshall mod which turns it more into a JMP-1
Kramer guitars > ADA MP-1 > Alesis Quad > BBE 362 > Celestion loaded Laney 4x12 cabs was my primary rig in the late 80's and early 90's. Today I've opted for Fractal units as an all-in-one solution and I haven't been disappointed so far.
Dude I love that Chorus Ensemble, I got one too. We're on the same wavelength, your style rocks, keep up the cool playing. So many effects out there to get but you make them sound great.
Of course it sounds good, you make all that stuff work ;-) Brilliant preamp in all seriousness, universally tweakable and it's amazing to me that some folks even went so far as to mod them! You should have grabbed a BBE for ultimate 80's tone....
This was supposed ro be my first rig back when I started circa early 90s. A local guy had this and a Digitech DSP 128, and was looking for "five bills" for both, as he put it. I thought it sounded great, but I literaly had zero idea how to use any of it. I didn't know what a preamp was, let alone what each device did. I had a Boss pedal and a solid state Fender and that was it, so this thing was a literal monster. I chose not to buy it, but instead bought his back collection of guitar magazines, full of songs and articles. Paper internet, basically. Those magazines were how I learned evrything in those early days, and was probably the right move at the time since I'm still playing today Still, I kinda wish I picked it up. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Love the MP-1’s! I have two in case one breaks down. Ever since I found Nuno used them I had to get them. As usual you made it sound incredible w Zakk type style and Nuno’s style, wow!
I recently started using my ADA MP-1 again for rehearsal. I had 2 of them. Used Rocktron Replifex and Intellifex with a Real Tube II preamp for the fx loop. Powered by the Tube Works MosValve amp. I sent the out of the ADA MP-1 to my stereo fx and send to my Two Notes Torpedo Cab M plus (stereo pair). I split the non speaker out to dual Orange Micro Terrors and 2 1x12 cabs. Still sounds killer. I use a TC Electronic Iron Curtain noisegate. The PA/Recorder hears virtual 6L6 power amps and Marshall 4x12 cabs.
Right on, I have the mate to it. The Ampulator, power amp and cab simulator. Still in use and very.much loved. For just one 12ax7, a bunch of old solid state components and a kick ass cab emulator. It's quite flexible and sounds great.
Great Video! Thank you so much. I need to install the noise reduction mod to my ada mp1, too. But I personaly realy like the internal Chorus of the mp1. It's fantastic when you use it in stereo and it might get a bit to 2-dimensional in mono, like most Stereochorus do when connected in mono mode. It's not simular to a JC120 or Boss CE1, more modern and aggressive, but it's a great addition to classic Choruspedals, that we all love but probably allready heard to often.
Man I remember the day the recto came out. I was working at a music store in Portsmouth NH, all stoked with my rack and MP1. Then I put it up against the recto, and my rack days were over.
Hi Euge! I enjoy your channel. I hope you explore the A/DA in stereo mode, that is where the chorus really shines! I bought my Boss ce-2 new in 82, there is a difference running the chorus in front or in the loop, but the amp-1 chorus really comes alive in stereo!
Picked one up for $150 USD a few years ago. Amazing how things go out of style... The price may drop but the value is still there with these, for sure. At first, I was using it for the usual high gain madness but before trading it, was fooling around and able to cop some surprisingly good low to mid-gain tones as well. Not gonna beat a 5e3 but still not bad. Would love to have another someday but good luck finding one for $150 lol
Is this the preamp testament used on souls of black to get their vicious high gain tone if you know by any chance? Trying to get their tone and apparently this is what does it...
Great playing and video brother! If you can, you should try the ADA MP-2 next. It's harder to come across, as the production volume on the MP-2 wasn't as high as the MP-1, but to me, it's the more aggressive and "fuller" MP preamp lol. It doesn't have the cult following like the MP-1, but it's a MUCH deeper and usable unit than the MP-1, many more features. Keep the content coming my man!
Sounds great! For about a decade I used an ADA through a Marshall 9000 poweramp and boosted it with a Proco Rat and an Alesis Quadraverb. I was always happy with it until my roommate at the time got the Marshall JMP1 and I preferred that over the ADA. I still have both units and use them to record.
I liked the ADA, but the Marshall seemed to cut through with a more natural tube amp tone. I wasn't so happy with the marshall clean but the crunch channel to me was better. I was lucky enough to be able to have a side by side comparison since the other guitarist on my band at the time had one.
Pretty sure Steph from Deftones used one of these for a bit. I’m really impressed by the sound you get here, tons of low end. I wonder how much the TSL is contributing to that. Great demo!
From what I remember he used one during Adrenaline era but I have no idea how much it contributed to his tone. I believe he switched to a Marshall JMP1 for Around the Fur.
Steph used it not for a bit. He actually used it on the first three albums, using also jcm800 to power it. Then he changed for a marshall valvestate power amp (9100 I think).
I never got along well with my ADA MP-1 and sold it around 2018 for $250 Canadian. You know what else ? I had a Marshall JMP 2203 (pre JCM 800) ( I paid maybe $400 in late 80's) and never really got along with that either. I sold that Marshall for $350 Canadian. That was in maybe 1995 but nobody wanted them back then. Now I found your channel and it seems I should have kept both of those units and figured out how to use them better because Euge's tones are exactly what I like. I could never get them to sound like this though. Too bad for me lol.
Had one back in the days. Ran it through my Marshall Silver Jubilee. Sounded really good. Especially with the chorus enabled to make the sound wider. Had a couple of sounds programmed, but realized after a while they sounded almost the same. So I lended it out to my guitarplaying friends so they could do some settings. So when I got it back it was kind of... WOW! 🙂
Very nice Euge. Awesome preamp. I've got 2 of them. LOL. One of them modded for 3 tube mod. I suggest reaching out to a user name MarshallJMP off of the ADA Depot site to hook you up with a 3 tube modded MP-1 to demo on your channel. The tube was awesome. Very much in the style of Zack Wylde no rest of the wicked and similar tones as well. Keep em coming.
I think you are the only guy who can make a Fender Champ sound like an 800 !!.. really nice comparison.. the ADA is awkward to program with no knobs.. that is for sure.. but cant complain about its history on 80's rock/metal records..
Sick riffs, leads and tone again Euge! Highly enjoyed the video. Sounds like fun to play these ADA units, but when you compared it to the 800+SD-1 in the end, man, the JCM800 provided a kick in the nuts that the ADA sound seems missing a bit. Does ESP still release the 4-knob Eclipses? They're much better looking than the newer 3-knob Eclipses i.m.o. ~Fabian
Thanks! Hard to beat a good ol’ 800 with SD-1 😎. Yeah they make my signatures at the og Japan Custom Shop. If you’re interested please send a mail to: import@musamaailma.fi
I've owned 2 or 3 ADA MP1s and even a Three Tube Modded one (which was the best of em). But I also came to the conclusion, that beside they were not bad at all, I got better sounds out of different amps, so I ended selling them. Lately I checked for their current pricing and thought, I should have kept one .. :D I also modded some of them and changed Caps which made them a lot quieter. Ada-Depot Forums where the best ressource for them you would find very friendly people and all the knowledge about these units you'd ever need :) there was also a good dealer for ADA stuff in central Europe, maybe still exists..
The way I came to the MP-1 was not via 80s records at all: it was via the Deftones album Around the Fur, which has an absolutely monstrous rhythm sounds and apparently used an MP-1. I was trying to replicate the tone, and I just could not get it right. I replicated the tone and produced an impulse response and whilst it sounded kind of right.. initially I thought my playing just sucked because it sounded far messier than the album, but after switching from my Marshall to an MP-1 profile on my Kemper (which may not necessarily be accurate) somehow it magically smoothed out all my playing to sound far better. Ever since I’ve fallen out of love with Marshall and really want to get a real MP-1.
as always just amazing killer riffage! i remember when those came out...if I recall correctly not long afterwards Marshall came out with their own rack mount preamp...am i remembering right?
That’s definitely the sound that I love! It reminds me a lot of Doug Aldrich mixed with Zakk Wilde. I know I’ve seen you do a demo of the guitar years ago but what are the pick ups it has? EMG pick ups?
My brother has two MP-1s, one of whom is modified. According to him, Joe Satriani´s Surfing With The Alien album from 1987 is a typical showcase for the unit.
I have been comparing the A/DA MP-1 vs, Digitech VGS 2120 Artist Preamp I like the A/DA MP-1, I like the A/DA Cleans, which tube overdrive sounds better?
I still have my MP1. So far had to update the EPROM chip and replace the battery to hold memory. Still kicks! But, I notice that notes in the higher register, like if you playing around the 12 to 17 frets on the high E string notes cancel out. Do you ever get that??
I so have sellers remorse from selling mine in the mid 90's. Now people pay twice the price for a used one. I don't know why they would stop making this incredible tone machine!
Thank you so much for making a video! I just purchased my first ADAMPmp-1 one preamp. And I am having some issues. The unit I have has no switch in the top to switch between inputs. Not sure what this tells us. When I turn the unit on three area code come out 12 and three. I do the suggested resets but the pre-programmed settings do not stay. Any advice would be appreciated thank you for your time.
Seriously good playing there! Gotta glue my eyebrows back on. I can't get enough of 80's hair metal.
Thanks! Who can? 😎🕺
Love the sound of preamp rack , Paul Gilbert signature sound
🤟👌

Cool man! I hear ya 😎🤟.
Same here PCW, this vid makes me wanta go pull out and dust off some of that stuff. ...But then , I'm not Euge, lol.
man you hit the harmonics on the low strings so consistently, Zakk himself would be proud!
😎🤟Thanks!

One of the best pieces of rack gear ever. Love the MP-1! Great video, Euge! \m/

🤟🔥😎
Still own my original ADA MP-1 from 1989! Love it.
👌💪
I had the mp-1 & the stack circa 1990. It’s also weird that I’ve come full circle & love that tone again! Shit happens when ya get old!😂
😁🤟

Whatever does the job 🤟.
Love your work ethic, playing, and tones!
Glad to hear! Thanks!
Its the player always. Euge can make anything sound good. 👍
🙏👌
I used to love my ADA and I still think that they sound great. Great video as always my friend. 👍🏻🤟🏻
👌. Thanks!
Cool man. I remember those pres. Sounds cooler than I expected. Very aggressive but pleasant, Great playing. Keep going:)
Yeah! Thanks!
Great video, thanks!! You have an amazing tone! Cheers from Portugal
Thanks a lot!
When you’re in the noodling section you can really hear how full the low end is without being flubby or muddy. Definitely a great sounding unit!
Yeah!
Great playing and demo of the ADA! I have always loved the MP1 and have 3 of them now and only one has got noisy but still love it!
Thanks!
Dude I love that Chorus Ensemble, I got one too. We're on the same wavelength, your style rocks, keep up the cool playing. So many effects out there to get but you make them sound great.

Man the GE7 is such an awesome icing on the cake for this tone. Love that pedal for stuff like this.
Yeah!
I still have two MP-1s in my rig. Love them.

Excellent review + That song at the start of the video is really good. I own the same preamp - thanks for sharing your settings.

Awesome tones and playing man. Always fantastic content! 🤘🤘

Killer playing and tone as always Euge! 🤘⚡️🤘
Thanks!
Really cool man I enjoy your videos I still got to put that video out about my Marshall JCM 2000 with the C12 cap mod and bright cap switch
Thanks!
Awesome, Sir!!
Thanks!
As a Dream Theater fan I thank you for playing the intro to Pull me under :)
You’re welcome thanks!
Hi Euge! I enjoy your channel. I hope you explore the A/DA in stereo mode, that is where the chorus really shines! I bought my Boss ce-2 new in 82, there is a difference running the chorus in front or in the loop, but the amp-1 chorus really comes alive in stereo!
Yeah I figured that I need to try it in stereo ’cos I guess that’s how it was designed 👌.
Holy shit, I used to love my MP1...that thing could do anything for the time.
👌
Picked one up for $150 USD a few years ago. Amazing how things go out of style... The price may drop but the value is still there with these, for sure.
At first, I was using it for the usual high gain madness but before trading it, was fooling around and able to cop some surprisingly good low to mid-gain tones as well. Not gonna beat a 5e3 but still not bad. Would love to have another someday but good luck finding one for $150 lol
🤟👌
Is this the preamp testament used on souls of black to get their vicious high gain tone if you know by any chance? Trying to get their tone and apparently this is what does it...
Great demo! Thanks for going so in-depth.
Thanks!

Such a legendary preamp!
Yeah!

Cool!
Im very curious about what made you change to jmp 1
I liked the ADA, but the Marshall seemed to cut through with a more natural tube amp tone. I wasn't so happy with the marshall clean but the crunch channel to me was better. I was lucky enough to be able to have a side by side comparison since the other guitarist on my band at the time had one.
Amazing!! sounds great!!! An IR of this cabinet mics would be incredible!!!! 😁😁🙄🙄
Thanks! We’ll see 😎
What a great riff and tone!!!
Thanks man!
Miss my ADA MP-1, use to run it through my Marshall master volume head in 95.. Great tone!!!
Yeah!
Pretty sure Steph from Deftones used one of these for a bit. I’m really impressed by the sound you get here, tons of low end. I wonder how much the TSL is contributing to that. Great demo!
Thanks! Yeah the power amp is always part of the tone too especially when cranked so the power tubes are really working 💪.

The tube was awesome. Very much in the style of Zack Wylde no rest of the wicked and similar tones as well.
Keep em coming.
Yeah I think he had done the mods on this one.
Thanks!
Best demo I’ve watched of this. Been curious for a while and now I’m convinced! Here’s to G.A.S!
Glad to hear man! Thanks!
I just cleaned mine up to sell. Needs battery. If I put it in I will go ahead and do battery housing mod.

That’s definitely the sound that I love! It reminds me a lot of Doug Aldrich mixed with Zakk Wilde. I know I’ve seen you do a demo of the guitar years ago but what are the pick ups it has? EMG pick ups?
Glad to hear! 🙏. They’re EMG 81 & 85.
I really needed some music... and Pepita too :)
Good 😎.
My brother has two MP-1s, one of whom is modified. According to him, Joe Satriani´s Surfing With The Alien album from 1987 is a typical showcase for the unit.
🤟
I have been comparing the A/DA MP-1 vs, Digitech VGS 2120 Artist Preamp I like the A/DA MP-1, I like the A/DA Cleans, which tube overdrive sounds
better?
I haven’t played with the Digitech so I have no idea. I guess you should know which one you like the most since you’ve compared them?
Getting a real Zakk Wylde Bloodbath in Paradise feel from that ADA song.
Or maybe Tattooed Dancer rather than Bloodbath in Paradise.
😎👌
Definitely!
Yep, great Tatooed Dancer vibe. 🤘
That tone
🤟😎
I still have my MP1. So far had to update the EPROM chip and replace the battery to hold memory. Still kicks! But, I notice that notes in the higher register, like if you playing around the 12 to 17 frets on the high E string notes cancel out. Do you ever get that??
Nope.
I so have sellers remorse from selling mine in the mid 90's. Now people pay twice the price for a used one. I don't know why they would stop making this incredible tone machine!
Had an MP1 and MP2 from '90-96. Only amps with knobs ever since, no more button pushing.
😎
1- What are the differences between line input and instrument input?
2- why did you do noise mod instead of upgrading 2.01 eprom?
Line input is for line level signals (keyboards, line out from audio interface/mixing console etc.)
I didn’t do anything; I bought it as it is
Not sound related at all but hopefully will relive my bad back and sore arse, what chair Is it I love the folding arms.
Great video too.
Thanks! It’s this one: www.tectake.co.uk/office-chair-springsteen-404156
Yes!
🤟🕺
Super epic
🙏🤟
Thank you so much for making a video! I just purchased my first ADAMPmp-1 one preamp. And I am having some issues. The unit I have has no switch in the top to switch between inputs. Not sure what this tells us. When I turn the unit on three area code come out 12 and three. I do the suggested resets but the pre-programmed settings do not stay. Any advice would be appreciated thank you for your time.
Dang, that sounds like rock !!!
🤟🤟🤪🤪
Yeah! 🤟
Great sound, bro! Did you try the classic version?
Thanks! Nope.
