In this month's episode, host Ivan Orsic and co-host Tanner Smith welcomed the one and only Landon Mayer into the studio to talk about flies, presentations, rigging, and the like for the month of December and beyond. In addition to talking about fishing for December, we talked about golden dorado in Argentina with our friends from Set Fly Fishing.
Make sure you stayed tuned through the entirety of the episode, as Landon graciously dropped a holiday giveaway of his most recent book - Guide Flies. Five copies are up for grabs!
As always, we answer a couple of commenter questions about rigging, bug choice, and fishing techniques. If you have a question about January fishing - leave a comment down below on the RUclips video. If we pick yours, you'll WIN a Trouts Prize Pack - including prizes from Rising Fish and Umpqua!
For the month of December, the Five Flies are available at our Denver location and online.

A question, a comment, and and an observation. Actually 2 questions, and not in that order. My comment is everyone of of your guests provide incredible insight into their approach to designing new patters and how they fish them. Love it. Observation has a tendency to lean further back from the microphone as he imbibes whiskey and becomes more relaxed, making it harder to hear him. And the questions: what sizes do you tie the Meat Whistle and for January, what flies do you recommend when the water is super low and clear and cold; and what flies do you recommend for when the water's muddy and rising (aka it's raining like hell)? HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    2. How do you make fishing friends? None of mine enjoy fishing

January Question: After getting some excellent cold weather gear from Trouts Fly Fishing, I ventured out for my first winter season and have had a great time! I heard about ice in rod guides but, instead of this, I experienced a completely frozen leader and my flies were ice balls (fishing Deckers, ~25 °F). Any ice management tips for the uninitiated? Thanks for the great content as always!

Hi , I am a big fan , I love the channel ,and I cannot thank you enough for the effort you provide for the sport .I have a question : when it comes to euro nymphing , how do you adjust the tippet length vs the water depth ? Many subject matter experts claim if the fly is touching the bottom , the fish won't touch it . Can you please elaborate or make a video .Your help is always appreciated .

Question for Jan related to a Dec fly : A size 16 Blowtorch has become my #1 confidence fly - but it goes against almost everything in the "fly fishing bible". I just fished it mid Dec as my point fly in 20 deg weather in a tailwater that normally produces 8-10 inch fish. It got aggressively HAMMERED by 12"-14" fish while my size 20 nymph was barely touched. Does it "match the hatch"? Hell no! Does it jive w/the theory you gotta go small in winter? Hell no! Thoughts on what's happening?? Should expect this same behavior into Jan.?

January Question- Confidence is everything, and I am learning this more and more. I am pretty new and have been getting confident in my tight lining, indicator and even throwing some dries. I have yet to throw a streamer at trout because I feel overwhelmed with all of the information out there and feel pressure to catch fish when I go out due to only getting out a couple times a year. I fish tail waters for the most part that range from 2-4 foot deep runs and some 6 foot deep pools. Obviously the more time on the water is the best way to build confidence. Until I get that confidence built up, what would be a good starter technique and leader set up? Sinking, non-sinking line, up stream, down stream presentation, 9 foot, 4 foot leader etc. Thanks for the suggestions and starting point to cut down on all the info. I’m going to have to learn to get over this numbers mindset and get into a learning one.
    Thanks for the show!

Hey guys. The five flies videos have been great and you’ve talked to some awesome fly tiers along the way. As a beginner fly tier I started tying relatively larger flies (like size 18+) because I thought they’d be easier. Since winter started though I’ve found a bunch of size 22 and 24 patterns are actually much easier to tie than expected (as long as you have good vision)… I know you’re in the biz of selling flies, but it might be helpful to highlight that new tiers shouldn’t be afraid of small sizes. Just a thought for these winter five flies. Thanks for all the work you do

Ive been fishing deckers and cheeseman approx 1 time per week the last two months as the action has gotten slower. Moving to different spots in winter is critical to catching 5-10 fish in a few hours. Fish from a far distance, in the high percentage areas, with some midges and an egg and you will get a handful of fish. If you are spending more then 20 minutes at one spot, you're doing it wrong. However, didnt see any spawning fish and didnt catch a fish on an egg - so it might be midges till march.
