Cricket Swarms Are Taking Over the Western U.S.

- Swarms of Mormon crickets are inundating towns in the western United States, leading to severe crop damage and economic loss.
These incidents have become increasingly common in recent years since Mormon cricket outbreaks are exacerbated by drought. Because the human-caused climate crisis has resulted in worsened drought conditions, especially in the West, these swarms have also worsened.
‘They cover our homes, buildings, and when run over will bloody our roads and leave a horrible smell from sitting in the hot summer sun!’ Kyra Adams of Nevada told Storyful.
While the insects are native to the United States, in large numbers they will feed on crops, which not only ravages the crops themselves but also results in soil erosion, water runoff, and nutrient cycling, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The insects are named for having ruined fields of crops for Mormon settlers in the 1800s. Despite ‘cricket’ being in their name, they are not actually crickets but rather shield-backed, short-winged katydids that share a closer resemblance with grasshoppers. The large insects can grow up to 2 inches long and are unable to fly.

Eh..bug swarms happen in areas. The bugs were there before us. Lots of history about swarms.
They should be collected and sold at pet stores for people's iquanas and whatnot. Also probably good as bait for fishers.
