Contrast,Balance,Emphasis,Proportion, Hierarchy,Repetition,Rhythm, Pattern, White space,Movement,Variety,Unity.
Thank you!
Can you please explain growth as a principle of design.
Different ways to achieve said designing principles?
great
art is, about sense and taste
The Principle of Design
1. Visual weight, make balance of your art work for the eye.
2. Unity, the relationship between elements.
3. Contrast, creating visual hierarchy. The use of different, colors, textures, shapes
4. Emphasis, use of negative, positive relationship, colors, lines.
5. Repetition, repeat the same element through a design, to create consistency
6. Pattern, the repetitions of multiple design elements
7. Rhythm, creating organized type of movement, the path our eyes takes us
8. Movement, the path our eyes takes through a design composition
9. Proportion a sense of unity creation, well to each other, that can add balance and harmony
10. Harmony is the sense of cohesiveness between the elements in the composition, somehow related
11. Variety creates contrast and tension in design composition, can be intriguing for the viewers.
These are the foundation for creating a composition, that can help you create a structure that is strong and presented in the right way. These principles will also help you understand; how other design are built or if you are missing the piece of the puzzle or editing process, when you are designing something to make sure your design works with these rules and help you design with purpose by giving function to every element in the composition and communicate clear message.
From now on when you see design you can decode it and why each piece is there and what is its function.
Thanks 👍
Works for NOTE TAKING TOO
tysm, i needed it for exam
🎉❤
❤
Excellent presentation…I’m a painter and these same principles apply to fine art; many artists want to skip this type of learning and end up not understanding why their paintings aren’t successful.
Glad it was helpful!
I’m a self-taught artist, and I’m just now taking online RUclips art courses to help improve my art. So thank you for this!
Color Theory is important too. If we don't learn color theory, we could create chaotic art pieces. One more thing, do not add too much contrast. This makes your art piece so chaotic that your brain couldn't process it correctly. Overall, amazing video!
thank you so much Laura ❤ I'm learning a lot from you , like I'm literally taking notes from each video of yours, thank you so much
This woman has her head on straight (and balanced). I like her approach, can learn from her, and be happy with the results. Her examples are great examples, accurate, and helpful. I recommend her to design classes around the world. Thank you Laura for your clear teaching methods and your dedication to a more pleasing world.
I have just invested 2 days into trying to figure out how to get started with design and got nowhere. Then someone pointed me to this video. Now it all makes sense and I feel like I am in a place to explore further into each of the principles you mentioned. So thank you! This was very helpful.
Excellent video. I really like your examples and your way of explaining. I've been a graphic designer for 10 years but I still like to watch different people's explanations of the basic principles because I like seeing and hearing other peoples ways of interpreting, explaining, and demonstrating them.
I'm beginning to study design and art. Could you please share some books where I can study these principles further?
Thank you Laura and thank you Envato Tuts+ for this incredible and cut-to-the-chase video. 😍
I didn't know the principles but here I am working for a company as a lead UI/UX designer lol.
I am really glad I stumbled upon this video thanks to RUclips's algorithm haha. 😄
Edit: In the Rhythm section, we can't also say there's no clear system for the repetition of the colours. If you be a little bit more playful then you'll start to see the pattern or system and using that system the blocks of the same colours were placed. Or maybe it's just me.
1 - Start from the bottom green block and image a ball hitting and ricocheting to the green block on the top.
2 - Now continue playing that old DVD icon thing that bounces off the border of the TV screen.
3 - Now place blocks of the same width right where the box hits and bounces off.
4 - Increase or decrease the width/height of the blocks and change colours.
5 - Your last hit point should be the blue block on the top.
You are giving us an eye to interpret the design of images. A good design interacts successfully in the sense of harmonious and beautiful proportion and balance.
The principal of design are as follows:
1_BALANCE
2_UNITY
3_CONTRAST
4_EMPHASIS
5_REPITATION
6_PATTERN
7_RYTHEM
8_MOVEMEMT
9_PROPORTION
10_HORMONY
11_VERITY
12_ THANK YOU FOR THIS
The course has a simple and efficient context. It is a must-watch. Miss Keung has a clear tone of voice, and her speech speed is appropriate. Well done, good job!
Another course from Laura! Excited to see this one :D
wow! I've come across so many videos with titles like this, but they were almost completely useless. This video, however, is very useful and informational! Thank you for sharing
So much good info in a short video! Thank you again!
You are so welcome!
I appreciate the presentation. It is always great to understand the building blocks of design.
Thank you very informative. Perfect lesson and samples.
Thank you. I am a business owner (a bootstrapped startup, to be more accurate) and this is what I exactly needed!! Unless you have knowledge of these concepts, you cannot guide your employees to design better
So happy that i found this video🎉
You're doing wonderful job❤
Loved the examples picked to illustrate the concepts here 💛
Your general base of teaching is very cool and classy. The lessons worked out too. Thanks a bunch!!!
Great to hear!
Great! I love the way you explaining . Makes easier to understand! Thank you!
Great. I'm a Graphic Designer/ Copywriter/ Painter from the Philippines. This is helpful

Thany u sooo mush for the translation in Arabic , This Arabic translation helped me and gave me the opportunity to learn. I hope the rest of the videos will also be translated

This is my first time enjoying your RUclips channel. Great content! Looking forward to hearing more from you! Your video was so informative. Thank you so much!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks for such an informative and well explained video. I showed it to my Art Class :)
Very nice and clear, thanks! How to get started? How to choose what principle to use?any tips on that? any videos in your channel on these topics?
Great video thanks! Just a small question regarding the second to last example "a bout de souffle". It also plays with breaking the words outside of frame and I wonder how this style fits into variety or one of the others mentioned in the video (how to use it correctly and when not to). great work!
Balance : equal spread of visual element.
Unity : consistent layout, style, and matching combination of colors.
Contrast : making hirarchy or making vocal point through different use of shape, color, for, etc.
Emphasis : using contrast to point out specific thing.
Repetition : create consistency for branding, can be used for unity.
Pattern : can be used for branding or give character to your design.
Rythm : creating movement with specific organizationan pattern.
Movement : Dynamic compotition to create a sequeance for the eye.
Proportion : the unity of scaling to create balance, and also give hirarchy.
Harmony : cohesivness of the element of the design, same templates, related shape, matching color or using gradient, ect.
Variety : using Variety of element to create more contrast.
From what i learn form this video, every element are related with each other, and sometimes it can make us confused which one come first. It better for us to choose some principle based on our big concept of the project, and then use the other non chosen principle to enhance the chosen principle.
That was so helpful thank you so much ! I finally found the rules of design I was looking for.
Glad it was helpful!
so useful! thanks!
Thank you so much Sensei! You are a blessing!
You too!
Much love.. Thanks
My fav is balance harmony pattern and randomness
Superb presentation, engaging delivery of content, aptly explains in most simplistic way about design elements
Thanks a lot 😊
really loved the poster examples you picked out for this video! super helpful
Glad you liked it!!
Nice info about Graphics design principles.
I'm Praise, and new to graphics design I came across this great tutorial session. It was helpful. Thank you so much.
Great that it was helpful.
Thank you for this highly informing video!! Well done
Love this lessons! True design mindset. Thanks Laura
You're so welcome!
Thanks for this course. It would be more helpful for beginners, if we could see examples where these principles are not reflected. For instance, to see something without unity or without balance etc.
11:31 this is a reference poster by Rosmarie TISSI is in the style of De Stijl style follows the rules of modernism with abstract which makes sense for it’s “no clear system” - What is also not explained is how the rectangles are related to typography layout of setting this border (highlighted) which is the system, part of a branded series without the set the context/system is missing the understanding of it’s “system”.
Stated in an article “I have always reduced my design to the essential, employed only few elements and played with the proportions and the empty spaces.” - Designculture
art is sense and taste
thanx for info
Great video! Thanks you a lot.
Thank you, it works perfect!

Great course as always!
Glad you think so!
Thank you so much for this informative video....I am learning...
HI! Great explanation! I was wondering what software did you use to create the animations in between? they were very balanced and respecting the unity principle as well.
thank you so much
nice, I never really consciously acknowledged that using different fonts styes (like sans vs seriff) was also a form of contrast.
I'm feeling pretty excited....!!
Just the answer I've been looking for. Thank you so much
Glad I could help!
Thank you for your great tips!
Glad you like them!

Thanks in Advance
A lot of thanks for making and sharing your video!!
My pleasure!
Amazing content and explanation 👍🏼
Glad you liked it!
Can you also show in your next videos, examples of a 'bad' version, where the design can go wrong, not just when it goes well please?
There are so many principles to take in to account, while composing a winning design, and obviously THERE is NO WAY one can incorporate all the mention elements in one art piece or project,
So could you help us in understanding with your NEXT TUTORIAL what to retain and what to let go or in other words what element complement the other element and what work in contrast so while we sit to execute a project we can actually produce a compelling design and don't get BRAIN FREEZE considering all mentioned elements altogether.
Your reply/ next tutorial will really be appreciated.

thanks man . you helped me so much thank you again
Glad I could help
Thank you so much. I appreciate you a lot.
This was an awesome course. Simple a strait to the point I loved it. But I wish Envato would recognize that we know this channel is Branded by Envato, so there is no need to call every example "An Envato Elements Example". It gets kinda distracting and Annoying after the 7th time. 😂It's like "I know this is ENVATO'S ELEMENTS! I KNOW!" LoL 🤣It's not really that serious, but it was distracting every time I heard it after the 7th time. BUT I LOVED THE LECTURE, AND HER TEACHING STYLE. IT WAS PERFECT PERFECT PERFECT!!!!! 😍🤩🥰
Very informative tutorial!
Glad you think so!
