I may be the exception, but as an older collector who has a fairly large collection I don't like to display it at all.
I have tons of cartridges and CD/DVD games intentionally kept out of the sunlight in organized drawers and bookshelves in a closet.
I don't feel the need to show my stuff off and feel that it often looks gaudy when done so.
Keep up the awesome vids! 👍🎮

I have mostly North American Sega Saturn games. I like to face them outward on custom shelves that I built. I really like this because when I sit down on the couch I can look and see all the different games and it gets me excited to play some of them. Since the games that are faced out have other games behind them I like to periodically reshelve the faced out games and then face out different games. This way I can kind of keep things fresh and sometimes you’re just in the mood for a game and when you see the box art you just get excited about playing that game and then put it in. Also I have found that I can fit more on the shelf when I have them faced out. I like having games the original case because it’s so much more of a sense of occasion when you pull from the protective sleeve, open the case and maybe even get out the manual and commit to having a great time. Sometimes I sort by publisher and sometimes I put all James Bond, Star Wars, Incredible Hulk games etc in one place, no matter the system.

I don't try to display them as pretty as possible, but just well organised, easy to reach and thus practical. I have most consoles always hooked up. My newer consoles and my Dreamcasts are hooked up in the living room and have most retro consoles in a retro gaming room. In bed bedroom are the Atari 7800 and Intellivision, because they use the small tv that has the best RF compatibility.

I display my games on a bookshelf in my room, in alphabetical order, separated by system. Games in the same series or franchise on the same system go together. Also even for digital games on console, I tend to put them into a designated "games" folder if given the option. Xbox One however does a great job of this with the "My Games & Apps" section, as it's incredibly organized and puts all of your games in one place. Finally, while doesn't necessarily have anything to do with displaying my games, I tend buy every version of the games I enjoy the most. A good example of this for me the Doom series, especially Doom 2016. I own the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch versions of both Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal, and both are of course absolutely awesome.

I don't have my Genesis collection anymore, but I saw someone store their loose carts in one of those old cases meant for cassette tapes. Thought that was neat. I always used large storage tubs and slid them under the bed because I needed the room.
Now all have is disc based games and what I do is I get those displays for dvd/blu ray from a friend. They are free and add a little charm to the room. So all my superhero games go on the Shazam display. My more sci fi games go on Battle Angel Alita, and so on. It seems like a good system and helps me find games faster. Also if a new one comes along I like better, I can throw away the old one easily. Much easier than moving furniture. Plus it's a good display for amiibo or all my Disney Infinity figures.

I just have all my consoles on an open backed shelf and my games mostly in a dresser filling all the drawers.
I like to use velcro zips to shorten cables into loops, which helps keep the cord mess nice and tidy.
All my controllers are in various milk crates sorted by Nintendo, Sega, and modern controllers. OG Xbox gets a whole crate because I am setup to do system link and 16 Xbox controllers take up a lot of space! Someday, I'll have enough friends for a day to actually use them all for a big Halo game! Did it once years ago but I only had 11 controllers at that time.

I ain't got much in a physical collection, but I do have a few. I put the games im in the middle of on a small stand right by my systems, that way I'm more likely to finish them, rather than swapping games like a madman or getting stuck trying to decide what to play because there's like 6 games already sitting there. It's also a conversation piece when my gamer friends come over. "So I've been playing [insert whatever game] you ever hear of it?"

  • @dapardine
    @dapardine 3 года назад +1

I know a common question is in regards to having all your systems hooked up at once is “should we leave it hooked up 100% and powered up?“. In recent years I have stopped doing that since those systems are constantly drawing power. I don’t want any risks especially with power surges; the part of Florida i live in is known for it. I’ve seen one gamer on RUclips who leaves all his systems plugged into a surge protector and just flips it off whenever he’s not using any of the systems. I’ve done that for quite a while. Now I just leave consoles on display with their AC adapters close by so that I can plug it in whenever I want to play them. I found that to be the safest way. The way I look at it is, I don’t play every single console I own every single day of the week. There are some years where I go months without playing a particular console. Now that I think of it, I can’t remember the last time I played the Wii.

I mean I do have a few snes plastic covers for my cartridges but it is a little annoying that i need to take out those covers and put them on the hardware.
Besides, the cartridges stand up just fine. However I'm a bit concerned that dust could somehow damage the lower part of the motherboard.
Is it true that dust can still Damage my snes cartridges without those plastic covers?

Dear Retro Bird, please be aware that the lights on the shelf placed very close to the video games will eat away the colours of the labels and stickers on the cartridges, as well as the colour of the boxes.. it will cause them to fade away.. you should be very careful. Good luck. :o)

    • @RetroBirdGaming

I was actually just wondering about this myself, so I appreciate you bringing it up. I've had my games lit up the way they are now for a number of years. No fading on the labels or any cases except for a couple Sega Genesis games, and that may just be due to age (I'm not sure). Now, as far as light from sun goes... yep that will absolute fade your games! :)

Heres an idea for games with cardboard boxes. Put the cartridge on the shelf, and the box next to that game. If you do this with n64 games you wont need labels for your games. For game boy, game boy color, and game boy advance you just line up all the boxes, and the cartridge. infront of the box
