- Yeast is an integral part of brewing, it gives your beer flavour and a fun amount of alcohol.
There are many reasons to save your yeast, save money, rescue a rare yeast you've acquired or you can even reproduce it to make yourself some VEGEMITE (potentially a future video)

Beauty and the Yeast
You can't measure your final gravity with a refractometer. You need to use a hydrometer instead so your final gravity was probably near what you hoped for
True fact.
Really? From what I've seen online I just have to use a refractometer calculator instead
Dude this video was a treat to watch. I love seeing someone show a realistic snapshot into their hobby.
Thank you!
Wow dude I really loved this video. Mostly been brewing wine and cider. But this got me interested in making a beer solely to try this technique. Can't believe you only have a couple hundred subscribers, but I'm sure the quality and substance of your videos will have you rising in popularity quickly.
Slow and steady, I just love making beer and videos. Definitely give it a try, it's super easy. Try brew in a bag, it's super simple but way more involved because you get to use raw ingredients.
This was actually really good to watch! I wanted to point out a couple things, the starting gravity would have been watered down by adding in that ice, you should measure your final gravity with a hydrometer, you can use a calculation to convert from the refrac but it's only measuring the sugar which is thrown off when alcohol is added. I've been doing all grain for a while now but can say the mistakes made are more important than having a problem free brew haha. I am subbed, keen to see more!
Yeast harvesting is the best, the next big thing I did was moved to pressure fermenting which makes temperature control a non issue in the warmer months
Excellent advice, and I'm glad you enjoyed. I do need to figure a better way of cooling down my wort I think.
I should probably do more research on how to use the refractometer.
Looking at your refractometer reading and assuming the OG was 1.040 that gives you about 4.5% ABV.
Next time take the og reading after the wort has cooled and final gravity reading with a decent hydrometer or learn how to interpret the final reading with the refractometer.🍻
My next brew I actually learned how to use the refractometer, I'm chipping away at one skill at a time. But I'll get there.... Hopefully
Cool nails on a guy that brews beer. its almost as if you're completely unique.
Interesting video although I'd worry much more about getting the very basics of brewing right before saving a few quid on yeast.
Its definitely way more easy for me to just buy yeast at this point. I'm loving learning new things though!!
@@corywashere Good man. I tried harvesting yeast once, think I ended up dumping a load of dead yeast cells and sh&t into the next brew to honest, didn't try that one again.
@@billybungle1757 I do want to save some spent yeast to try and make Vegemite, just because it would be fun though. It'll probably be gross haha
