- A relaxing weekend in Newport? Nope - we're here to WORK!!
Last weekend at this time we were in Newport, attending the International Boat Show. Not only were we excited to hang out with some of the other RUclipsrs there (we finally got to meet Andy of Boatworks Today!!), but it gave us a great chance to tour many boats of different shapes and sizes to get an idea of how we would like to design our interior.
From multihulls to monohulls, single handing boats to yachts with crew (although that one did not make the final cut into the video), we looked at all kinds of styles to find out what we liked and what color schemes will work with our white oak interior.
It's time to make decisions on things like accent paint colors, fiddles for the counters, overhead lights, overhead liners, and even where to place our air conditioner vents.
The nice thing is, it has reminded us that we're getting to the stage where these decisions are necessary. It won't be long before we're installing all of the things ourselves and looking more and more like a completed boat.
Only a few weeks until we're attending the Annapolis Boat Show, which will have a much wider selection of catamarans and monohulls to look at. Let us know what you'd like to see and we'll make sure to cover it!

Just had a pretty cool idea you guys are in a perfect position to implement. I have never seen an underwater recessed camera above the props in a youtube yacht build.
1- You can see your blade pitch.
2- Obvious reasons- line tangles, kelp, etc.
An underwater light would be logical as well. Hope you see this post and consider.

The old race boats (Santa Cruz) had a simple clear port (about 3" round) over the rudder to see if anything was tangled on it or the prop. Worked well.

Recommend considering how the airflow will work with air conditioning on. Cool air will work its way to the hulls but only if the air already in the hulls has a way out. Not knowing what AC system you are planning and where the air return is, consider having small vents in each of the hulls to get better air circulation. Having some venting in the hulls will force the warmer air down there into the salon where the main air return will probably be, Also have the air return as high as possible. If all the vents and the return are in the main salon, then there will be very little air flow in the hulls. If you use windows/hatches to get air out of hulls, then the cold air that was forced down the stairwells will be what exits; not the warm air in the salon. It will probably come down to experimenting with different window/hatch openings depending on where you are. Hope you can plan out a way to move the air efficiently. Really admire all the work you two have done on all your boats!
Good info. I've been so focused on where the air conditioner puts out the cold air, I hadn't considered the return much. The returns were just based on the available area... Both will be in the upper areas of each hull. The 1st AC will blow into the main salon at the bridge deck, and the 2nd blows into the cabin itself.

Don’t watch many RUclips sailing blogs but you guys are amazing. And/or crazy. I literally have to skip an episode now and then because they exhaust ME. This was one hell of a build. More boats and your intelligent attention to detail at Annapolis. Even on boats I’m familiar with you guys show me things I’ve missed. My boats have gotten bigger as I aged and, now at 75 with 398,000 sea miles behind me, I have a Hallberg-Rassy 64 to accommodate the kids and grandkids. Never, as with you, have owned a catamaran though I’ve delivered 5 Gunboats over the years from Joburg and, just recently, from La Grande-Motte to Antigua. Sailed with friends on many others but what can I say, I love the heel! Chapeau Matt & Jessica! Almost forgot Georgie! Sail w two Birmans myself.
I think we'd love the heel if we were on a 64' HR too :). Amazing boat you have, and a great platform for spending time with the grandkids.... Good job introducing them to the sea!
Hurricane Lee hit us here in Nova Scotia, wasn't a real bad storm. I believe when you have lived here for years you come to realize a hurricane can be a real destructive force, days week(s) without power . But Nor'easters are way worse. Because once the storms over in a hurricane its warm & you are dealing with water, with a nor'easter its freezing & while I have a generator, woodstove that will warm my entire home. Cold post storm is worse than warm post storm. Some of the Nor'easters I have seen have dropped feet of snow & a nice thick ice layer on everything
We're so thankful that Lee veered away from Newport, and we only dealt with an evening of gusty winds and some drizzle. I can only imagine how bad your Nor'easters are - I wouldn't want to get stuck in one!! 😬

I have been enjoying your channel for at least a year (probably 2+). I watch a few sailing channels (La Vagabonde, SV Delos, Calico Skies, Gone with the Wynns, MJ Sailing) and you are one of the Channels that I watch every week! I think that you are the future for the other shows that have young children on their boats.
With the Wynns and La Vegabonds boats almost ready, we'll be the last channel working on their boats for awhile. Hopefully we can make it exciting soon with system installs.
@@MJSailing ... while we wait for Plukky to get his cat keeled in Greece. On the other side and name a few, we can always expect Mads to have a project running, there's still Duracell and Magic Carpet that haven't finished, for metal boats there's a recent uncertainty with what Odd is up to, and on the wooden side there's Tally Ho, Yaba and Ship Happens ... I guess boat works never ends.
I just hope you got some good ideas nice to see the crew from Total Boat.

Funny to see that woman who is wearing the Icelantic skis sweatshirt at around 17:26 in the video. The staff of Icelantic takes a retreat on a charter catamaran almost every year and one of their staff is a captain, and a ripping skier.

I personally like all the cabinets and closets to have airflow. Cane or slates or even holes, but I understand it’s more work and expense.
It's practical, but for us, the cosmetics of slats or cane is something we've never really liked. We've found having a leak free boat makes a huge difference in boat smells, so focus will be on that.
When you are on walk-thrus at boat shows, it's nice to hear what design features and materials catch your eye, and what you would like or not on the MJ Cat. :¬) Webhead USA

I grew up in Middletown to Newport and I did not recognise any of the harbor you showed. I once skied from Bristol Bay to the Jamestown Bridge Now the Pell Bridge by then I was losing sight of the boat because of the waves and had to give the dare to get to elephant rock.

And if we're able to stick to that, we should be able to achieve sailing at wind speed up to 13 knots, just like the tests they've been doing on the production version. 😍

The Dark and Stormy is a great cocktail but I recommend you try a Perfect Storm cocktail. Use Kraken dark rum and the Kraken dark spiced ginger beer, don’t forget the lime wedge.
Good representation av various boat solutions for details. I'd like to see more smart technical sail line organisers and running of the lines associated with reefing and hoisting. Surely, there must be some smart brains in the industry that have come out with something smart and esy to work systems!
It's always interesting to see how different boat makers do things differently. Some good stuff, some really bad stuff.
We did see a lot of nicely finished boats while we were there. Out of curiosity, what would you consider the bad stuff?
@@MJSailing Bad is heads with manual pumps, having to choose between having your dingy on the foredeck restricting forward view or having to have it trail behind you getting beat up, kitchen counters that don't keep plates/food on them when things get a bit rolly....not having good ventilation. THAT sucks when you are in the tropics at 95¯ and 95% humidity. Have something fore and aft to allow airflow..........extra points for A/C!!!!

I hope with all these flash electronics you are planning you have also considered lightening protection. You will be sailing around a what is virtually a big capacitor.
They all have manual overrides and fall back to simple breakers like on any boat's electrical system. But they carry a price repair bill
As someone who is a couple decades older, one thing I would say is to think about how a higher step is going to be as you get older. I know you are young and fit, but age hits hard.
"This is at least double the width of what our hulls are..." Yeah, that's why the FP cats are pigs. Not only will light air performance suffer, with 15 knots on the beam, you'll probably have to motorsail. And the weight of those boats is insane - no, literally it's insane! I hope you guys had time to go onboard the Eagle 53, and maybe take us on ride on that cat. That would be nice to see in a future episode. That is an amazing design and it would be great to see the progress of developing the T-foils and control systems.
The Eagle was a beast! Awesome design, but when your other boat is a 90' Gunboat, you can have a toy like that.

Amazes me how designers can get really creative with confined spaces shoe-horning all manner of clever solutions into tiny volumes then when they have a little more volume to play with - they WASTE it! Built in furniture is just ridiculous; who doesn't ever change their sofa or move it round the room?

I was just wondering when you are doing all the power through the boat do you think of doing a 120 volt system, and a 240 volt system some were you go in the world you will have the right voltage to use things you buy.

We'll be a 110v boat again. While we plan on spending a lot of time in Europe, we find it easier to find the one-off needs met by importing 110v equipment vs having to import everything if we did 230v from the build stage. We'll have a transformer to get us from 230v dockside to 110v on the boat. None of the equipment we've selected cares if it's 60hz or 50, so that doesn't matter in this case.
Standard construction code dictates 7/11, height , tread. Makes for a sturdier feeling under foot. Ideal
But very seldom available on boats or RVs. Safety should win, but often it would be unusable if we took land ideas and moved them to a limited moving space like on a boat.
More about the rigging and the drivelines
Great video- thanks! What are you thinking is the optimal distance (inches) from the front edge of your helm seat to: a) the helm wheel? and b) the fiberglass slightly farther away? I am dealing with same question for a build so curious to see your measuring that.
Of course it's going to depend on individuals body type, but for us 14" from the wheel to the front of the helm seat was a good distance to comfortably reach the wheel and still have space to move past. We similarly found 20" from fiberglass steering pedestal to front edge of helm seat good leg clearance too, but this will depend on if the helm seat is at normal chair height (legs further in front) or at bar stool height where legs are resting on a foot rest and more vertical.
@@MJSailingthanks! I am leaning towards doing mine 15 inches from the helm wheel since any closer starts to feel a bit cramped.
Seems closer to what I've seen on a lot of production cats. They are usually 16" or 17" - but for us, that seemed too much of a reach when actually sitting

It's a Herreshoff design from 1876 called Amaryllis. Wikipedia has a great article on it

You mentioned watching Netflix. That got me thinking. Is Starlink an option that you can put on your boat? Is that something you are even considering? Otherwise, how do you connect to the internet or stream when you are outside of your home port?
We'll definitely have Starlink on the boat when we shove off. It's a game changer for any cruiser having the needed access to weather and routing information. But of course being able to stream Netflix will be nice too :)

Maybe you can auction off the name of your Starlink WiFi network to raise funds for the finishing touches on the boat? E.g., "MJnetsponsoredbyTotalBoat"
I haven't researched the mounting needs of the Starlink before. But from what I've seen on other boats, it needs to be raised above the surrounding surface a bit. We may mount it on a pole on the stern

Easiest solutions for making straight lines always look like crap. Second Catamaran viewed had less of an infestation of unnecessary 90° angles.
Hardwood finishes are only for how I want to remember my father's sailboat. "If it ain't white, it ain't right" boat philosophy is only advantageous for photographs of your catamaran. That's why you experience "white out" in the majority of charters.
Too long of an exposer to hazardous materials, but some of us do it if to house, cars, boats, over the years, because we want it done right.

I don't think that a lot of, what appears to be chipboard, will withstand the rigours of life at sea very well.
Not saying I like it, but every interior on a production boat is made of chipboard nowadays.
It's not the same stuff as what most think of as chipboard - it's produced with a waterproof glue and higher resin ratio making it surprisingly durable, but the main benefit is how stable it is in humidity. The stuff I've used in the past cost more than marine plywood, but for the manufacturers less warranty work (and consistency) saves them money over the added cost of the product. It's the same with the reconstructed wood veneer... Cost more, but every sheet is the same. Alpi Wood is the most used manufacturer of these products
