there is a 3rd option ,hike up the 4 mile trail an take the panoramic trail which takes you to nevada falls an hike down either the mist trail or horse trail to the valley , its about 13 miles total.
This is the way to go to do Panoramic Trail, just add it if in good enough shape. The reverse view of this one is from Clouds Rest, which you can also add to it and Panoramic. That is a very long day though.
3 Weeks ago I did the 4 Mile trail as well. Actually, I only did it because the road is closed to Glacier Point and I didn't inform myself about the elevation change upfront. During the 3+ hours hike to Glacier Point I was sometimes cursing that its a straight up trail (sometimes steep), but to be honest: it was totally worth it. Amazing views and experience. Just be aware: if you are completely out of shape this might be not the trail for you :)
Yea, this hike is a butt kicker but the views are incredible. It's almost impossible to find a hike out of the valley that doesn't make you sweat though. You picked a good option.
Thanks for posting. I watched your video before the hike to assess if ok for 9 year old. A week ago we did it not only to Glacier Point but continued to Sentinel Dome, and back thru Glacier Point down to the valley.
That's an awesome hike. You can also do a longer version (prob not for a 9 year old) down the Pohono to Tunnel View. It's a long day but pretty epic with no crowds.
Nice, yea, must have been a challenge when you're a kid. Give it a try the next time you're there. I do it almost every year if I can. It never gets old.
Thanks very much for the guide on your website. It was correct in every particular! Took us 6 hours, which was tight for walking back to visitors centre for last YART bus, but public transport in the valley is another story altogether. Anyway thanks for the great info.
Nice, and yea, Yosemite can be brutal in the summer. I've laid sweating in my tent at night here in 90F+ temps. Shoulder seasons are the sweet spot for colors and water flow.
Just did this hike 2 days ago. Had no idea where I was headed but it was awesome but really tiring for myself (not the in the best shape) but totally worth it!
Im not in the greatest shape either I really want to experience this though! Would you say it’s worth it? We’re there places to sit and rest for a minute?
If at Glacier you can walk down a quarter mile to get the big views then back up to Glacier. Same deal with Panoramic. You can go all the way down to Illouette Falls and back up.
Planning to do this hike in two weeks - up and back down. Despite hiking in Yosemite many times in the last 45+ years, this will be my first time on this trail.
Why does the article say 4570' of climbing? Where did that number come from? You show the delta as being 3227', and it doesn't look like there's much up and down.
Great video! In Yosemite now watching people on the trail from our room at thr lodge. What time of year did you do this video and what time of day did you leave and get back? Planning to do this hike in the future!
Thnx for the Video. Very nice. We plan or do the trail from Glacier Point in September 2024. How far in advance should we reserve the Shuttle Bus to Glacier Point ?
Thanks for the info!! I’m definitely going to do this trail as Glacier Point Road is closing for 2022! Also a question: How high is the elevation and how much would it affect you? I’m used to hiking up to 12 miles in about 5,000 ft above sea level and I want to hike the full 9.6 miles.
@@teenytinytoons haha my trip got cancelled unfortunately due to repeated flight cancellations (as i live on the east coast) so I actually never got to do this trail :(
Your vidoes are so helpful. Thank you! Without the shuttle running, I was thinking about just doing a bit of the four mile trail from Glacier point and then going back. The part where you saw reverse tunnel view, how far in was that?
You're welcome, and yea, it should be good but conditions always change. It is a popular trail, so even if there's snow around, it should be well-trodden. If it's sketchy, just turn around or try using micro-spikes.
I'm excited to do this hike soon and your video was very helpful! What time would you recommend starting the hike if I'm doing valley to Glacier point and back?
Coming from Scotland to visit Yosemite next year covid permitting. Seen glacier road will be closed all year which has kinda messed up my plans. Will have to hike 4 mile trial up and panorama trail back down. I’m a complete novice hiker but i do run 5 Miles 5 days a week so reasonable fit but would this be doable for me?
It will be a long day, doing Panorama prob adds about 10mi+ to the effort to get back to the trailhead. It's a beautiful trail through, I think you'll be okay if you prep with water / snacks and leave early.
RUclips will try to give you the highest resolution that your connection will handle. The latest 360 vids are shot at 5.7k. Otherwise I publish a regular HD video and also a 360 version for those able to watch the 360 vids.
What month did you shoot this? I'm thinking about hiking this next week but I'm worried about ice on the cliff. Planning to take spikes and poles but still nervous about what to expect right there
Do you know anything about going up 4 mile and down Panorama and John Muir? (sorry if you already covered this topic) I have a mild/medium fear of heights but looking at the one section of 4 mile that opens up a bit on your 360 version, I think I will be okay. How long is this area of the hike? With the road closed, I am determined to give getting up to Glacier Point a try. I don't think I would be comfortable doing the mist trail down, hence Panorma to John Muir. Do you know of any areas that might give someone with fear of heights issue on Panorma/John Muir? Taking a trip to Yosemite beginning of September with my wife. We are in decent shape and we are starting a little bit of a program to get our selves ready. We don't hike a lot but, we have a couple of New Hampshire hikes planned over the summer to help us feel more ready. I am likely going to hire a guide for this long dayhike to give myself some piece of mind, but would still love your insights. THANK YOU so much for your videos and inspiration!
I think you'll be fine on the 4 Mile Trail, there aren't any real narrow parts, the camera is probably making it look a little worse than it actually is. And Panorama/JMT will be about the same.
If you check the "Alerts & Closures" link at the top of all my guides, it will give you info on when it's closed. Generally this trail is open all year from the valley floor but Glacier Road is closed in winter. I think it's also closed summer 2021 for repairs.

Thanks so much for posting. Brings back fond memories. I was there in 1978 as a young guy. I hope to return as an old guy. 🙂
Ah, that's great, I wish I had my act together when I was younger to visit. Def go back for a visit, it's always magical at Yosemite...
This hike was one of my biggest accomplishments, when I did it 2010.
@@gd2341 how long did it take? I want to do it but I feel like I might take too long
I did the hike down in 2002. Amazing views. And, it's much easier going down- besides the inclination, you're going from thin air to thicker air.
This is a nice hike. I've done it from Glacier Point down. I'd definitely like to do it again. Thanks for the video.
That's a great way to do it. Sometimes I get the wife to drop me off up here and do it downhill too.
I’m going this Wednesday, I’ve decided to do the 4 mile trail. If being honest I’m a little hesitant but I think I’m in decent shape to handle it.
It was amazing 😭😭

Thanks, I was looking for an alternate route back to Glacier Point and found your website to be very helpful ! Keep at it !
Very informative. Looks like I can do this, no sweat lol.

I'll be visiting that trail this July.
We did it. It was fantastic!!!
Nice quick review of the hike. Thank you
I've only done this hike once, back when I was probably around nine years old. Will definitely need to do it again. Nice video.
Nice, yea, must have been a challenge when you're a kid. Give it a try the next time you're there. I do it almost every year if I can. It never gets old.

Doing it this weekend looks fun! Heard it’s been hot so planning on heading out early morning
Have fun, and yea, going early is smart anyway. Beat the crowds, see the sunrise, etc. - I always leave early mornings if possible.
This is a great trail. Great. The way to do Panaramic. Long haul 14 miles with both.
Just did this hike 2 days ago. Had no idea where I was headed but it was awesome but really tiring for myself (not the in the best shape) but totally worth it!

This is great...thanks for posting. I may be going end of April. Do you know if you can hike to the top and back during that time of the year?

If the trail is open in April, I hope to do it with the road being closed! or, Upper Falls trail. decisions, decisions..
April will be really nice for the Upper Falls, they should be in full flow.
We'll be there in March 2022, do you know if it'll be open then? I've read many different things...
Yup, park is open all year. Expect snow though.
