I really loved this. There has always been something creepy about the Whistler’s Mother painting to me. Something just slightly....off? And therefore off-putting to the viewer the more you look at it, even though at first glance it doesn’t seem so different from Whistler’s usual style. His work was always somewhat haunting to me with his use of whispy stroke in bright white and how they pops off the canvas. But this one painting of his mother, somehow stands out in contrast to his other paintings....in trying to do a different kind of portrait something about this particular one strikes a chord in us that makes it his most famous. I think because it’s so lifelike, even in such muted colors, which brings focus to her stark pose. Making it seem unnatural with the subject not looking at the painter at all. At first you look at it and think it is just someone sitting, but if you keep looking the pose starts to seem uncomfortable to hold; with her spine so straight against the chair, her toes pointed, with a grim face that seems intently focused on something just beyond the edge of the canvas that we can never see.
It reminds me of the story “The Minister‘s Black Veil” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Something about this painting makes you uncomfortable for some reason. But it’s hard to put into words exactly why.

I can't understand it. Why he use the blood of the witch to finish the picture? And why he said he finally captures the essence from his mother.

    • @irenerandazzo4206

@@yuna9635 he wanted to trap the witch in the painting. He painted and painted and he couldn't seem to manege to find the essence of the witch to put in the painting so he could trap her there. So when he finally used her blood in the painting... That was the essence he was looking for and that is what it took to take the witch out of his mother's body and inside the painting. He wanted to trap the witches essence in the painting, not his mother's. That is why when the mother asked "does it favor me?" (Meaning does it look like me?) In the end he said "Not anymore". Because he was portraying the witch to trap her, not his real mother. You understand now?

As a portrait artist I just love this one. The amount of soul, literally, we put into our work, if you’re a passionate painter like me, is tremendous , and you want that persons entire essence to be portrayed in their eyes or their image as a whole the most perfectly it can be. A good artist pushes themselves. A fantastic artist is never satisfied. But a phenomenal artist strives for perfection, but always knows there is no such thing. No one reads my comments ever so this is where I get out a lot of my feelings and thoughts without repercussions.

When the older brother was painting/drawing his younger brothers portrait. His gold chain was actually showing. But when he was told to “SIT STILL”, and the camera 🎥 panned back to the boy sitting in the chair 🪑 His chain wasn’t visible. It was tucked away beneath his outfit.
I’m not sure if anyone else noticed this, as I’ve yet to read the comments.
But at 6:50 it can be just slightly seen. At 6:51 it is clearly visible. And again, as previously mentioned. When told to, “SIT STILL”!!. It miraculously has been tucked back away.
I do love when a short, is set back in an early period. Apart from the minor hiccup( Which was obviously missed during editing) I found everything about this short, to be fantastically done!
Well done, to all the cast and crew!! I think the clothing, the scenery, was all done with absolute perfection!
    Congratulations!!! A job well done! 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
Thank you for a great watch.
Though I think it’s been placed in the wrong genre. Does not really fit a horror.
But. That’s just my opinion. Thanks again, for a great short!!

That’s because when he said sit still the boy was hiding the
      Chain in his shirt
He said girls where jewelry and what would dad think which is why it was shown then not shown when told to sit still ( that’s why he was moving... hiding chain) and brother said to show it so he brought it back out.... :)

Amanda Roman I think you’re missing the point.
Even if this was so. A glitch still occurred. It’s not that big a deal. All I did was mention it.
It’s just a small error, which has accidentally occurred during editing. Which, again. Was clearly missed.
But thank you for your comment. Unfortunately though. I think we’ve two completely different outlooks on the event.
      Thank you 😊

    Nice short film. :)
I really loved the film language throughout - great ambience to both create atmosphere and make this film feel like it's been made by a top-notch studio, great use of sound-effects and makeup, remarkably decent visual effects, and great acting too. It also has a fairly good story - I loved the Faustian bargain twist with the boy's death, and the mother's fate, though admittedly I was confused during the final scene (perhaps due to my lack of folkloric knowledge) until Whistler finished the picture. I think it says a lot about how standard the twist-ending or "The End... Or Is It?" trope has become to these kinds of films that I was expecting such a twist with the mother at the end. All in all, this short film looks really professionally made and has a really great atmosphere. :) :)

I would have never confirmed my belief if it wasn't for u two I saw her cheeks.....I was expecting a bright red stroke noticeable but.....the pink is so subtle it has u guessing what did he paint red and what'd it do.
It gave her life.pink cheeks equate warmth bloodflow. He'd always painted her without essence of life. She was always cold and never showing any signs of still having lice in hdr. Once he realized her bleeding would cross and transfer over to the painting..it activated life in her gain because someone had to solve the puzzle.

Well done!! I was thinking about other scary ways it could have ended:
I half expected for the witch in the painting to sharply turn her head and stare straight into the camera just as the camera pans to the painting one last time, horror music on cue giving us a cheap but "oh so effective" jump scare!!
Or for instance the son thinking he captured the witch in his painting, carries the woman past his newly finished artwork. The woman in his arms, glares tauntingly at her previous cell mate laughing hysterically as we realize he had unknowingly imprisoned his own mother in the painting giving the witch full reign over the body once belonging to his mother. His mother screams for mercy, pleading for her son to see her as she stares back through the painting in utter panic, horror, and disbelief.
    THE (OTHER) END...LOL

the most interesting factoid about this is that “Arrangement in Gray and Black,” (it’s original title from its first showing) during its loan from the Louvre in Paris to the United States in 1963, on a brief jog to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a scraping of the painting was made, trying to authenticate it as the original; at the time it was one of the most copied artworks in the world. Later testing of the sample revealed traces of blood and skin cells. No DNA was done however, and what would be the point?

    Fun fact:
The original painting was destroyed hours after its arrival to America. The displayed painting is just a replica but the destroyed original rests on the wall of Flat 2, 12 Arbour road, Highbury just above the flat of a grumpy old lady with a moody cat. 😂

Actually couldn’t stop laughing when she said “Baba Yaga” with that serious face. Baba Yaga is from Russian fairytales I’ve listened to since I was like 2 yo, I know all the ways you can defeat her, no way you’re scaring me with that😂
