  • Digital vs Paper Bibles. Each has its pros and cons. But what if there was a third option with different advantages and disadvantages? That's where the ESV digital scripture journal Bible from Crossway comes in.
This is a smart PDF version of the Bible in the ESV translation and here's how I use it.

On Goodnotes you need to tap the symbol in the upper right corner that looks like a pencil with a line through it. Once you tap on that, that activates the links and you can jump around by tapping on the book/chapter. Once you get to where you are going, tap on the pencil symbol in the upper right corner, then you can write again.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll try this but unfortunately I don’t have my iPad with me at the moment. I am a bit surprised as I thought I should be able to interact with my finger even when the apple pencil is connected. It seems strange but I’ll be happy to be proven wrong!

@@chrisjwilson No problem. I hope it works out for you. It doesn’t really have anything to do with the design of the iPad or Apple Pencil, or with the Bible PDF itself, but rather with the way Goodnotes has chosen to design their app. The problem they are trying to avoid is accidentally activating links to other pages when you are in the middle of writing something. Hence the design choice to have a “read only” mode to activate PDF hyperlinks. I’d suggest this video on the Paperless X channel to understand how PDFs work in GoodNotes ruclips.net/video/8jb9JMtUrM8/видео.html. Other apps handle it differently. I believe in Notability, pressing on the link activates a pop-up bubble that says “follow-link” and I have heard that in Noteshelf you can just click on the link directly.

Additionally, although not a tap and go, in the edit mode you can press and hold fora second or 2 and when you lift your finger or pen you will have the option to open link. At least then you don’t have to keep exiting edit mode and then go back in.

The biggest advantage of a digital Bible vs a paper Bible is I carry around my iPad and it has ALL my resources and access to the entire internet of resources within an easily carried unit. No bulky resource books. No stuffed pencil bag.
The biggest advantage of a digital Bible vs an E-BOOK BIBLE is the ability to add pages, write directly on the page, and add decorations if you like to Bible "journal".
I solved the problem of finding a version by making my own. Yes, it took me a while and, in truth, I’m still tweaking it, but it is serving my needs. I can do portrait, landscape, landscape with 2 pages so I can read on one side and make notes on the other. I can have a reference resource on one side and the Bible on the other.

To "jump around" in goodnotes, you need to push Read-Mode button in the right corner of Goodnotes toolbar.
Then, to write on pages, push Write mode in the right corner again.

Thanks, someone had shared this point the day after I published the video but I forgot to pin their comment. I've done so now. Thanks again for sharing.

Thank you for sharing this. A while ago I tried to find a pdf version of the Bible because I was trying to find easier ways of reading it, kind of like how you would read something in kindle or iBooks. I have a hard time picking up my paper Bible to read it like I would any other book and I don’t like reading from Bible apps. So I was trying to make the experience more like when I read for fun. I don’t mind crossway so I will definitely check it out.

The reason why your tabs aren’t working is because you need to click on the pen tool at the very top of your screen it’s the second icon in from the right then when you see that line going through it that means that you can click on all the tabs. To be able to mark in your Bible to highlight and make notes you would click that again

I am really interested in using the Crossway Bible. I’ve been searching to see if it has red letters for when Jesus is speaking. If someone could answer this for me, that would be great! Thanks so much for the video!

I can’t find a red letter version among my downloads. Maybe there is an option but I don’t see it. By default it is white text.

Thank you for sharing this option. I'm blind and cannot use paper Bibles as the text is nowhere near big enough for me to read it. I like the option of putting notes in with the text. I'll be checking this out. Do you know if it has the option of white text on a black background? I'm extremely light-sensitive and only use white on black so I can study without getting a roaring headache. Also, do you know if it has text-to-speech? That is how I read most often so I can read for more than 10-15 minutes. Thanks so much for your time!

There is a white text on black background option. Depending on your pdf app, you can have it read and add notes in the comments. But your app needs to support reading the text. Sorry for the delay but I had to check again.

I have not. I hadn't heard of it before and it does appear quite interesting. The fact that notes won't be transferred with the new update (and the pricing) puts me off somewhat. But I'll give it a look. Thanks.

Greetings Chris ... Very nice video. I'd love to share a demo video showcasing a personally-created PDF. It's not available to the public, as I've created it for my own personal use. Reply if you're interested. I'm not really wanting the link to be publicly available due to copyright issues. Still, I am operating under the strictest requirements of Fair Use. Again, very nice video you've created.
