I am not 100% sure, but I'd guess that somewhere in the underflow setup the game tries to play a different soundtrack that overlaps with the "being guided to the gym" soundtrack. And as for the underflow method I am even less sure. My guess would be that looking at dittos moves on that exact tile (something something having certain tiles loaded makes the cooltrainer glitch behave differently ) corrupts some data in the party and the bag, probably changing stats and XP of Pokemon and changing types of Items. Maybe looking at the stats there turns the Item in slot 4 into Q;MP (without changing the quantity) and since I only have 3 Items after tossing the potions Cooltrainer turns the cancel button into Q;MP with a quantity of 255, and from there it is basically just your standart underflow combining stacks of the same Items lowering the amounts of Items stacks in the bag, while moving the item with quantity 255 (read from the game as the cancel button) 1 position up until the number of item stacks is -1 which is read as 255 I hope this is close enough to the Truth, but there is definitely someone (like the creators of the route) that know for sure how this underflow works

I'm pretty sure Charmander is usually better for 1024 because of its faster cry and maybe the rival and bug catcher battles, but I'm not sure. I was thinking about maybe doing a TAS of this, but with the Bulba/Pidgey route if it doesn't really matter, because I have no way of knowing the correct frame to save the game.
@@DJIncendration I think squirtle is mainly used in this route because the BTW works with full PP unlike with Charmander (I don't actually know, but I assume that's the case because if charmander would work it would have been routed with it as it is obviously faster) I guess Bulba/Pidgey strats could work similarly to this, because I think the squirtle itself is not a requirment for anything related to the Underflow or anything else except for the BTW I could ofc be completely wrong as I haven't actually tested it myself, but it would be interesting to know if it works with bulba
