My then three year old great-nephew tested all these to decided what he wanted to give to his cousin and next door neighbor friend, two other three year olds. He loved your swatching videos. Mr. Sketch is what he chose. The three of will be five this year and love water color, oil pastels, water color pencils. . . My refrigerator door is a full gallery.
Probably 20 years ago, I found a set of plastic crayons in an art store and they were decently vibrant and virtually indestructible. I went back and got their biggest set and showed an art teacher friend. She fell in love and started ordering them for her younger art classes and really enjoyed them - and they didn't roll off the desks or break when dropped. But we didn't see them anywhere else for a long time. It's funny to see several sets out now! They're a lot more durable and don't tempt kids to peel off the wrappers and leave scraps everywhere. Win!
The Crayola Color Sticks are actually woodless colored pencils ✏️ like the no longer available Prismacolor Art Stix. The Crayola Color Stix are watersoluble crayons more in the Caran Dashe Neocolor II type of crayons category. The difference is not just in the spelling. The Crayola Color Sticks can be sharpened and used as any woodless colored pencil. I love them for backgrounds and large areas as well as sharpened for smaller areas. I have found the lay down and blendability to be much different than the Crayola Colored Pencils and definitely different from Crayola Twistable Colored Pencils. Many colorist/artist would be quite surprised with the results. Just my very limited humble opinion. Enjoyed the video as always🙂
Hello, Nice to meet you soon! Dear Lindsay! I thought that your pastel and colors were most beautiful in the photo. And your many color works are always most beautiful and better! And You shown me best variety colors videos. Thus I always thank you for your videos and crafts! To Dear Lindsay!🌼!🧡!❤!
Thank you so much for this video! As a side note, and I know you receive money for when we watch ads, it was very refreshing to just have one 15 second ad in the video. Don't get me wrong I love your work and will watch ads up to 30 seconds to support you moniterally, it's just a breath of fresh air to have just one ad; not five, six, or more that seem so often to interrupt your videos.
Thanks! I never know what RUclips will serve on a video. I notice they put more ads on Sat chat and fewer on tutorials. I'm glad it wasn't too bad this time.
Love those plastic sheeting for outdoor lanterns we, along with the little ones, decorate for the event. We've never had any of the candles blow out nor one melt. They are fabulous for night time illumination.
Thanks for comparing these!. I would like to see you do something with one of them as a resist for a watercolor piece. It would give us some great ideas. Have a great day
Great comparison video! I had purchased the Deli crayons earlier last year but found them lackluster and just went for the CD Neocolor I crayons. I love my Neocolor II and knew the CD brand is reliable on quality. I love the Neocolor I crayons as anticipated. I use them in mixed media art journaling mostly. I’ve been doing a lot of purging so I donated the Deli set. It at least feels good to pass things along to others or to charity and whittle my stash significantly. Thanks for another great informative video, Lindsay!
I have a set of the Prisma color Nupastels, artsticks. I am sorry to hear they are no longer in production. They are great for doing large areas quickly, and work the same as the regular Prismacolor pencils. Oh well.
I have a set of Prismacolor Art sticks from design school. Got them well over a decade ago lol. Actually they are still pretty new. I love the product though. People can say what they will, but Prismacolor produces good quality products in my opinion. I have the Crayola sticks as well. I like them , so fun to color with. Thanks for this wonderful video!!
I just came across your channel from a Google search! I was trying to find some "unbreakable crayons" for myself. I'm 23 and I love coloring with crayons. I love how they glide on paper, I love the look of them on paper. I also especially love using them in coloring books, I do a nice outline with them and gently color it in. They look more bold and they're way gentler on my wrists. I have an undiagnosed wrist issue that causes me extreme pain, so crayons are the best option for me. Anyway, I came here to say thank you for this video and I subscribed to your channel. I look forward to seeing more from you!
I recently gave in to the strong desire to have a set of Luminance color pencils. I bought the 40 color set from Dick Blick. (I've only just swatched them.) Their price, $87, was the same as Amazon and bc my order was over $59, I got free shipping. I wanted to give the sale to Blick's bc they really support artists and are very competitive in their pricing. Fortunately too, if I ever really want to go to their brick & mortar store, they have a store in DC, less than 10 miles from where we live in Md. But it's not a casual trip & I'd have to take the subway bc parking is difficult or too expensive. Just life in the city.
I have been to that Blick. I drove, and the parking was difficult. I will still go back. I got a lot of interesting bargains along with everything I was looking for except gel crayons. I haven't been in a while, but they had Prismacolor Art Stix, including the colorless blender. They told me they are not available online, but some stores still have stock.
It's like you read my mind! The other day I was thinking that I need to get some crayons but not sure which kind! I'mexcitedly watching now but I had to comment!
I always try to give my nephew quality supplies. Not saying he gets a box of Daniel Smith paint for his 10th birthday, but I feel there is no better way to discourage a child from art than to give them terrible products "for kidzzz" because, hey, they are ten, what do they know? Thank God I managed to talk my sister out of giving him one of those awful plastic toddler scissors when he was younger. Give them proper tools and supervise instead.
My favorite thing to do on a snowy Eastern Arizona day is watch Lindsay. Yes you heard me right. It is pouring down snow in the desert of Arizona! Usually it stays on the mountain but not today!
@@thefrugalcrafter The sun came out and already melted off everything that wasn't on the northern side or in the shade. No shoveling required. It was fun while it was here. The dog sure had fun playing in it. We only got a couple of inches.
Great review, comparison and inspiration ideas video. You are so thorough, as always. I liked how you also spattered Project ideas along the way. I only have oil and soft pastels (plus my beloved Catan d'Ache II) and am happy with them so far. If I decide to go for these, I would save up to get the Neocolor I, as I trust their lightfastness and quality.
Most of these crayons have great pigment. I think I might use them on a background. Just not sure. The Neocolor II crayons look gorgeous. When you review/compare products, you really go all out! Thank you for doing that. I always enjoy watching you!!
I have a great tip on accumulation art supplies go have a look at the second hand stores/council tip bin day. You might be surprised to find so goodies. Down here in Sydney, Australia we have council big bin day I literally found a 72 set of Derwent pastel pencils in mint condition. Sometimes you also might find discontinued art supplies in second hand or antique stores.
Thanks so much for the comparison. I use china markers and love these colors. I use the plastic dividers to draw shapes with posca markers and have them in binder. Saw this on RUclips. Can’t remember her full name. Glad these china markers were easy to unravel.🌈💕
Thanks so much for this very interesting and informative video. It can save us so much money and time trying different crayons etc. Besides it was fun to watch!
Thank you, Lindsay, I really appreciate the in-depth look at each of these products and how they perform on black, white and DuraLar! The acetate test was a surprise and a welcome one! ♥️👏🏻♥️ For my cardmaking, the Crayola Color Sticks would make more sense for base layer fill-in and then detailing in CP as I do have strength issues. For archival Fine Art though, the Caran d'Ache Neocolours will always have my priority. I got the Crayola Twistables as an option for Bible Journaling and they did a pretty good job and even for blending - they are more CP than crayon, aren't they?
I found the Crayola Twistables to have a wonderful lay down and blending capabilities on my Bible art journaling as well. Very surprising that they often outperform more expensive colored pencils on the thin Bible pages.
Now that's a video for me, I LOVE crayons. Drawing with crayons is so much fun, they are like the little siblings of color pencils and oil pastels. When I just cannot get myself to work, I like to just play with my crayons. And I actually like using kids crayons for that because it doesn't feel serious or like work. I like Crayola, because nostalgia, but Maped is also good, Faber Castell and even the Ikea ones. For my actual art work my crayon choice is Neocolor 1. I really enjoy using them, and, coming to think about it, I think I do not even know of any other actual artist grade wax crayon. I can think of plenty of watercolor crayons for artists, and crayon-like things like the art sticks, or stuff for crafting, but is there even another actual artist grade wax crayon out there besides Neocolor 1? I don't think I have seen that. If there is, I would love to know so I could try it.
Enjoyed the video!! But I never thought of useing anything but sharpie style markers on shrinkable plastic! Any advice? I have grand kids and shrinkable plastic.
What a useful video! I love the last 2 ideas - the first about the plastic sheet helping place ideas on artwork you aren't totally sure about yet and the Crayola China crayons as a base layer...Fantastic ideas. Thanks for sharing...much love💜🩵💙
If you feel like treating yourself CdA makes a fancy crayon/chalk holder called Fixpencil 0012. I love using it with the Neocolor I (and II) for covering a large area. Nice grip for folks with hand issues.
Yes, they are indeed useful. They feel great in the hand. I upgraded to those after using other non name plastic pastel holders, which did the job fine (and you can afford to have many!) But the Catan d'Ache feels so good in the hand. By the way, Koh-i-Noor also has a version of the oil/soft pastel holder ad well.
Hey Lindsay, I have Crayola, Mr. Sketches, Sargent Art twist crayons, I love them all, Crayola are not opaque but does not produce any dust which i like
Regarding the Caran d’Ache Swisscolor wax pastels - I bought the water soluble version as soon as I saw them at Blick, 2 or more years ago, to give to my kids. I have the full set of the Neocolor II wax pastels, and I was really amazed at how well the Swisscolor version performed. They weren’t the same as Neocolor II, but they were very good for a student grade art supply - activated very quickly and were very highly pigmented. I bought several sets for my family, and more for gifts for birthday presents for other children, and then the most recent set was different… as seems to keep happening with art supplies. They were very brittle/harder, and noticeably more difficult to activate, and not as pigmented. I don’t know if I just got a bad batch, or they have permanently changed. I was very disappointed because we loved this product, plus I expect a high quality product from Caran d’Ache. I cannot speak to to non-water-soluble version, though. They’re inexpensive enough that they are probably worth buying to test out.
I like the idea of using them on transparencies. I've thought of doing something like that over alcohol paintings, not sure if crayons are what I'd use other than to see what it looks like though. What medium would you recommend? Thanks for swatching these, the comparisons were very interesting.
Hullo Lindsay, wonderful video and as always you tick all the boxes and make everyone want to run out and buy more supplies! I was also very impressed with Kasey Golden’s year of the crayon videos if you’re looking for some videos comparing crayons creating art pieces check her videos out! I tried the 10 packs of the CaranD’ache Neocolor 1 &2’s and I was more impressed with the 2’s as I am more about water soluble mediums. I got some Marabu crayons in a Scrawlrbox and I was going to get the set but Amazon recommended the KingArt brand of crayons and they work just like the Marabu sticks at a quarter of the price! I think there might be more pigment CaranD’ache sticks but as neither is going to end up into a original artwork to sell, they are mostly for practice and fun and they were great for that. I imagine they would be good in a coloring book too! Thanks again for creating a wonderful video that everyone can learn from. I look forward to the next entertaining/educational video from you!
Derwent used to do a water-soluble crayon called an artbar - I still have the 24 pack. They are very good, fully dissolve in water, been a long time since I used them.
Are you inside my head? I just got my first tin of neocolor i and came across some vintage crayola both this last week and was sitting here thinking "whats the real difference between these and what should I do with them?"
I liked the idea of using a transparency to overlay on your watercolor to help you make keep a composition decision. Never would have thought of that, would the transparency be easy to wipe or clean off the crayon to reuse?
Met a young 22 year old artist who did caricatures at a party we attended. She is fantastic! Used Prismacolor Art Stix on copy paper with Dollar Tree black marker and she only had 6 little pieces left. She said color pencils hurt her hands. Would you still consider Caran d'ache Neocolor I still the closest to the stix? I'm 3+ times her age and I love making art. I want to help her as she is a very talented and kind person. I don't have a lot of money to try different supplies so I'm hoping you have an opinion. We all really appreciate your reviews!!! Thanks so much Lindsay!!!
MY FAV! Hands down... Neo Color. I have to add I love watercolor art so there's a new kid in my arsenal... Tim Holtz wordless watercolor pencils I absolutely am so stingy with them. I'm afraid no new colors will be added or be discontinued like his watercolor markers. So I'm over careful with them. Wish I new his sources to save money.
The pencils are made in China so look for a set of woodless watercolor pencils on amazon and I bet you will find them. The arteza woodless ones are great for instance.
Have you seen Kristina Joy's Crayola Crayon art? She creates works that look like paintings with the cheap crayons. I wonder if Crayola Crayons would also work as a base. I played around with blending them with colored pencils and a seamless blend can be made.
I hope I am not opening a floodgate, but have you tried Manley wax pastels? Also, I have the Posca wax pastels. They are nice but I think over priced/rated.
Thanks for reminding me that I ordered some Manleys a couple of months ago. I haven't even tried them yet, and until I read your comment I had actually entirely forgotten about them. 😅
@@justacatwhocantype They are nice. Comparable to Neocolor in feel but no lightfast information. I was impressed with my set of 30 so I got the fluorescent/pastel set.
I bought the art sticks on ebay many years ago. They may not have been discontinued yet. You used them in a video and they were so pretty I just had to have them! They were cheap too. I am better about not buying every pretty art supply now.
Thank you so much Lindsey for crayon testing. I have regular crayola crayons, pencils, markers. Until now I forgot I have the twistables( So ashamed) I have them for awhile. I will definitely try the other crayola products..in my price range. Could you please explain stickiness, oil pastels, China markers, resist? I always learn so much from you. You make me feel like I know what I'm talking about. Lol. I need to shop my craft stash.😎🤗💖 tyfs
Hi Lindsay! A very good comparison test. Have you ever heard of Mr. Crayon the artist. I don't believe he is still alive, but he did some beautiful portraits. I have always wondered what type of paper his used and how he blended his colors. Does anyone have any ideas on his techniques? Does anyone know the answer? Thanks Lindsay.
Jane's crayons are discontinued done by Spellbinders. Not sure if you know Prisma will NO longer be making any of their pencils, stick any of their item Available OPEN STOCK. Sad trying to compete with Walmart, Amozon etc. They have discontiuned their Lavendar and Lilac' pencils. Making sets is sad because if you have a favorite now you will have to rebuy a set to replace one pencil :o(
@@thefrugalcrafter My art store owner told me he is getting rid of all prisma products due to the fact they will only br making sets? I guess we'll see...lol
Yep my local fine art supply store cleared out their open stock of the wonderful Prismacolor Nu Pastel sticks. They were all half price so I got 1 of every color they had left…about 50. They are absolutely gorgeous and fairly lightfast…and water soluble. It really is sad that Prismacolor is doing the “quantity over quality” corporate thing. I guess they’re still owned by Rubbermaid, so I’m not surprised….they’ve been going in this direction for some time. 😞
Here is a bit of a vent about crayons versus markers. At some point over the past markers hit the market and became an instant hit with schools and children. I find them so limiting. I realise that there are blendable markers but I don't see them in schools. My grandchildren always want the markers. It is an easy way to lay down a saturated color, with limited color options. If drawing cartoons is the goal, they are a great choice. But if you want to great art with nuance, they do not work The standard markers do not blend well. It is hard for children to control line widthout unless they have another set, etc. etc. I have been convincing my 7 yo grand daughter to work with crayons more and I am happy about that. However I wish school teachers would strive to encourage using better art tools for better art.
Sadly art budgets are the first thing to get cut and there are rigid rubrics they have to follow. That's why we need to encourage art at home like you have.
I'm not sold on the idea of plastic crayons over wax for kids. Considering how crumbly they were and the problem of microplastics, I'd leave those on the shelf.
Well I seem to be having a monday This is a link to Echo Gillette and her interesting technique for using crayons ruclips.net/video/B0VRgmk4F80/видео.html
They are wax crayons but they contain either polypropylene or polyethylene.I think the ones aimed at kids tend to contain PE while PP ones are more for industrial uses like marking stuff. But yeah, just a regular wax crayon that is given a different consistency by the addition of plastic.
I purchased JD Power Pastels a few years ago when they were discontinued at a clearance sale in Michael's. I was not impressed. I just couldn't get the hang of using them and they were very hard & waxy. I love JD products, but not this one. I ended up selling them. 🫤

But the Catan d'Ache feels so good in the hand.
Oh bummer. Thanks for letting me know.
Good to have this information. Thank you for the share
I like the idea of using them on transparencies. I've thought of doing something like that over alcohol paintings, not sure if crayons are what I'd use other than to see what it looks like though. What medium would you recommend? Thanks for swatching these, the comparisons were very interesting.
Any sort if oil pastel i think.
I have Caran D'ache and the King Art crayons. I feel inhibited about using the former be wise of the cost, but the King Art crayons are really fun.
I use the twistables as Bible highlighters & for Bible journaling, but only until I can afford the Neocolors & Neocolor II crayons.
how fun, but have to get the coffee going first..thanks again Lindsay
Derwent used to do a water-soluble crayon called an artbar - I still have the 24 pack. They are very good, fully dissolve in water, been a long time since I used them.
I never tried those
@@thefrugalcrafter Unfortunately I think they are discontinued Lindsay. They are very creamy, if not a wee bit crumbly but they are nice to work with.
You might like inktense sticks. Not exactly the same thing, but very fun!
I found some of the discontinued prismacolor pencils. The lavender shade at micheals.
Side by side, I like the Bic "plastic" over Crayola's regular crayons.
Cool tip. Had no idea, gotta try
Hello Lindsay. I love watching your product reviews, I always learn something new. TYFS Have a wonderful day 😊🤗
Thank you! You too!
Are you inside my head? I just got my first tin of neocolor i and came across some vintage crayola both this last week and was sitting here thinking "whats the real difference between these and what should I do with them?"
How do you like the Tim Holtz Distress crayons?
I don't like them much. I didn't include them here because they are water soluble and these crayons are all water resistant.
I had the Jane Davenport and didn't really like them that much. I felt they were too waxy.
I liked the idea of using a transparency to overlay on your watercolor to help you make keep a composition decision. Never would have thought of that, would the transparency be easy to wipe or clean off the crayon to reuse?
You could wipe them off well enough to use again. It might scratch of go a bit cloudy but it will still do the trick.
Yes, she would love them! How kind of you, good luck to you both:)
@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you so much Lindsay!!!
I'll look her up
I hope I am not opening a floodgate, but have you tried Manley wax pastels? Also, I have the Posca wax pastels. They are nice but I think over priced/rated.
I have not tried either.
At least they last a long time
Thank you so much Lindsey for crayon testing.
Would using the project crayons underneath as a base layer affect the lightfastness of your colored pencils?
Honestly it might. I would suggest the neocolor crayons if lightfastness is a concern.
Are Swisscolor I Wax Pastels the Neocolor I?
Yes
@@thefrugalcrafter thx ❤️
Neocolors are cheaper per stick ($0.66) than the Crayolas ($1.20) and you get more colors! I’d go for the Neocolors.
Where can you get neocolors that cheap?
You gotta try the maped plastic crayons as well :0
I haven't heard of him
Gosh I cannot find the 24 set of color sticks!
They are discontinued:(
What about neocolor ii? I hear they’re softer than the i’s
1’s
They ate and watersoluble
I think Crayola also sells a neon oil pastel that looks like a crayon
Crayola oil pastels are lovely!
Which are next best to the power pastels on plastic?
Probably neocolor or any oil pastel
@@thefrugalcrafter thanks
@@thefrugalcrafter thanks
What is a China marker ??? Is it also a Crayon ???
It's also called a grease pencil. It's those peel away thick oily pencils teachers use in overheard projectors
Making sets is sad because if you have a favorite now you will have to rebuy a set to replace one pencil :o(
I think the prismacolor Premier pencils are the only product they make that will be available open stock.
@@thefrugalcrafter My art store owner told me he is getting rid of all prisma products due to the fact they will only br making sets? I guess we'll see...lol
Yep my local fine art supply store cleared out their open stock of the wonderful Prismacolor Nu Pastel sticks. They were all half price
so I got 1 of every color they had left…about 50.
Prismacolor discontinuing art stix was heartbreaking
It was!
I am convinced, though I have no evidence, that he Bic are the same as the Coupy.
I think you were the one to recommend the bic and deli to me. Thanks btw!
I'm not sold on the idea of plastic crayons over wax for kids. Considering how crumbly they were and the problem of microplastics, I'd leave those on the shelf.
Nope. Neocolor ll is my all time FAV. I wasn't paying attention. Nothing new in winter.
sakura craypas washable crayons are the best crayons ever
I didn't know they existed!
Well I seem to be having a monday This is a link to Echo Gillette and her interesting technique for using crayons ruclips.net/video/B0VRgmk4F80/видео.html
crayola crayons are not good for kids, they are to hard and keep breaking, and lets not talk about how dusty they get.
Plastic crayons, really? They're plastic? Interesting. 😯
That's what they are called. They are actually less breakable and smoother and recommended for younger kids 😆
Thank you for that last tip Lindsay. Definitely something to try!
You're so welcome!
