I am so grateful that this color footage exists. Harry James and Helen Forrest at the height of their careers. It is a snapshot of what was popular in America during the 1940's. Yes, this was Hollywood, but it did reflect peoples tastes of the time. And I hate to say, in that respect, it was a much better era...

while i definitely agree that it was a better era for music and things like fashion, the era did also have many problems, including racism and sexism, which we still haven’t completely escaped.

Even as a child I was interested in music from decades before I was born. I still love the music from 20s, 30s, 40s. I love the big orchestras. There were so many of them those days, big popular music orchestras are hard to find. I am from the Netherlands, and we only have one or two and they are struggling.
Exactly my thoughts .. growing up and appreciating and exploring all the music that was their prior to my birth was one of the best experience you could possibly have. It put everything in perspective. It still does.. it really does.

Saw Helen in person many times. A bubbly lady with a great laugh. As a singer she simply was unparalleled. She had everything: A great voice, faultless intonation and rhythm, crystal clear diction and great warmth and sympatico. She was the most sought-after singer in the band business. Her career extended decades past the big band era and she worked until nearly the end of her life. I saw one of her last appearances, at the Ravinia Festival outside Chicago, and she was as terrific as ever.
She survived a tough childhood and she was also ahead of her time in being willing to cross the color line in her professional life. Behind that beautiful voice and face was a woman of true character. Rest in peace Ms. Forrest.

This was one of the first songs I remember listening to in my grandparents home in Richmond Hill, NY. They used to roll up the carpet and dance to this. What a lovely memory and as a kid I thought it was so corny. A beautiful song and still enjoyable. This was when they wrote songs that you could make love to, if even just by dancing. This is from Springtime in the Rockies 1942. This movie had a great cast. I was sorry that beautiful Betty Grable didn't get one solo song in this film. There's a radio version of this with her and Dick Powell. Betty marrying Harry was the biggest mistake of her life. I believe he's the one that got her chain smoking and drinking martinis.

That being said, Harry and Helen are both wonderful. Harry James always had the sweetest trumpet tone, and could still play hot without being harsh. His vibrato and embellishments were wonderful, too. I learned of Helen Forrest from her work with Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman. This song was her big break outside of the typical 8 bar vocal refrains that were common for band singers back then.
We must all have had Helen Forrest's crazy dream at one time or another. Interesting that this great tune has such a long and lovely instrumental prelude; I guess everyone's attention span was longer back then.

Well she just happened to have a big crush on Harry, and was very probably singing this directly to Mr. James. Unfortunately for Helen, Harry had a stronger interest in Betty Grable, who he would eventually marry.

I see the sax section (2a; 2t; 1b) all double on clarinets, well, 4 seem, to I think; a bit hard to see, but I think(?) one of the tenor sax players then doubles on bass clarinet maybe? Can anyone else verify? I've been trying to locate the original score for this arrangment - no luck so far; only able to find a generic re-arrangement for a more standard big band - it's not bad, but I've been looking for the original layout with the french horn and strings. Great piece. I also wonder why there're so few Helen Ward video around ...? (She sang often with Benny Goodman).
Funny that you noticed that! She was one of the five greatest female singers of the 40's but was considered not "hollywood pretty" enough for leads,, unlike many of her contempories. She was dating Harry James at the time though, but was kttc (kicked to the curb) to make way for his to be- lifelong love Betty Grable. Something else funny, if they hadn't cut when they did, Helen would have run right into the guy with the violin!

Big bands could have been as good with half the musicians you usually see in videos ... which means that musicians might have doubled their pay at the time.
You clearly no nothing. The standard big bamd was typically comprised of 16/17 musicians. A standard dance band about 12. Try playing some of these scores with 8 musicians and you'll have a totally different sound

I am 19 and I completely agree with you. I have been in Love with 40s/50s Hollywood. I love the music, actresses, fashion and cars.

Where are the tats and piercings? They look naked without the body "art". And what are they wearing? No sweats and T shirts? No class back then.
